Joseph Horovitz, Composer (1926-2022): A Centenary Tribute

24 May 5:00 pm6:30 pm

To mark the centenary of the birth in Vienna of celebrated composer and much-loved teacher Joseph Horovitz, who came as a child to this country in 1938, Insiders/Outsiders is honoured to play host to a special online event to pay tribute to this versatile and highly respected figure in the British musical world. The event has been organised by Regina Hepner, who – like most of the other participants – knew Joseph personally, in consultation with Norbert Meyn (RCM) and Dr.Paul Archbold of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

The session will be introduced by Regina Hepner, who was instrumental in producing an extended filmed interview with him (conducted by Susanne Schmerda) which has only just been released. Key excerpts from this film will be framed by short talks by violinist Madeleine Mitchell, musicologist and family member Malcolm Miller and composer Kenneth Hesketh, a colleague of Joseph at the Royal College of Music. The event will end with a Q&A and the opportunity for others whose paths crossed with Joseph to share their memories of him.

NB For those less familiar with Joseph’s work, we suggest that you listen to some of the following material on YouTube, in advance of this event:
Sonatina for clarinet and piano (Gervase de Peyer / Gwenneth Pryor)
String Quartet no. 5 (Carducci Quartet)
Alice in Wonderland (Ron Goodwin & his orchestra)
