SUMMARY:Jacques & Jacqueline Groag: Architect & Designer
DESCRIPTION:Isokon Gallery\, London\n  \nJacques Groag\, architect and furniture designer\, and Jacqueline Groag\, textile and pattern designer\, were two celebrated residents of the Isokon in the 1940s and early 1950s\, yet due to split residence between three countries\, which often did not communicate with each other in the 20th century\, the tremendous scope of work of these second-wave Viennese Modernists has only recently become known. \nThis exhibition covers their individual careers in Vienna and Czechoslovakia\, their lives as Jewish émigrés to London\, their collaborations\, and the couple’s unique contributions in Britain to postwar exhibitions\, monuments\, furniture and textile design. The Isokon exhibition describes the Groags’ remarkable range of contacts that included Josef Hoffman\, Ludwig Wittgenstein\, Adolf Loos and Trude Fleischmann\, while the display is copiously illustrated with many of their pre- and post-war works including commissions ranging from the Austrian Werkbundsiedlung\, to the Festival of Britain\, Gordon Russell\, Swan & Edgar\, Heal’s\, Colibri and Schiaparelli. Jacqueline\, some of whose original textiles are on show\, even created the fabric for a dress worn by the future Elizabeth II. \nThe book Two Hidden Figures of the Viennese Modern Movement by Ursula Prokop will be on sale at the Gallery throughout the season.

SUMMARY:Aleksander Żyw: Before & After
DESCRIPTION:Aleksander Żyw\, Self Portrait (detail)\, © c1935\nVirtual Gallery\nAleksander Żyw was born in Lida\, Poland in 1905 and trained at Warsaw School of Fine Arts in the early 1930s. He was living and working in Paris when the War broke out and he fought with the Polish Army in France before escaping to the UK where the Polish Army was reforming. He arrived in Scotland in 1940 and was appointed as an official war artist. He made Edinburgh his home until he moved permanently to Italy in the 1970s. During his time in Edinburgh he has a profound impact on the city with a number of notable exhibitions\, including three with The Scottish Gallery\, and later retrospectives organised by the Scottish Arts Council and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. \nThis focused exhibition\, 25 years since the artist’s death\, offers a snapshot of a pivotal moment in Żyw’s artistic career. The group of work\, which date from the years 1934 – 1951 provide insight into a European painter who emerged from the devastation and suffering of war a radically altered artist\, and with a body of work strengthened by the experiences he had encountered. \nClick here to purchase the accompanying catalogue. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Toys and Modernism: Paul and Marjorie Abbatt Ltd.\, 1932-1973
DESCRIPTION:From 1932 to 1973\, Paul and Marjorie Abbatt Ltd. was the leading British company making and selling a range of toys and play equipment based on theories of child development and play. Teachers and shoppers looking for something brightly coloured\, versatile\, charming but robust and usually made of wood\, knew that their shop at 94\, Wimpole Street (designed by Ernö Goldfinger in 1936) or their mail-order catalogues would provide it. \nInspired by what they saw in Austria\, Germany and Russia in 1931\, the Abbatts maintained contacts in these countries\, while providing opportunities for two Bauhaus refugees\, Franz Singer and Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack. They also helped rescue the specialist in play for disabled children\, Milan Morgenstern (another Bauhäusler)\, his wife and children from Vienna in 1938\, helping them to find their feet and contribute to this field in Britain. \nAlan Powers’ book\, Abbatt Toys: Modern Toys for Modern Children is published by Design for Today and he has contributed to an exhibition on the same subject at Margaret Howell\, 34 Wigmore Street\, from 23 October to 11 November 2020. \nTo book\, click here. \nThis event is organized by Insiders/Outsiders. \n  \n\nThis event will be held on Zoom. Upon registering\, you will be sent a link to the Event in your confirmation email\, and reminders will be sent closer to the time. \nHow do I join a Zoom event? You can join an event simply by clicking the meeting link or going to join.zoom.us and entering the meeting ID. Although you will be prompted to download the software once you have clicked on the link\, you do not need a Zoom account to attend an event.

SUMMARY:The Painter's Hidden Masterpiece: the story of Johannes Matthaeus Koelz
DESCRIPTION:The Painter’s Hidden Masterpiece: the story of Johannes Matthaeus Koelz\, book cover (detail)\nSimon Lake\, former curator of the German Expressionist collection at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery\, will tell the story of a remarkable and until now almost entirely forgotten artist\, Johannes Matthaeus Koelz. \nKoelz was a non-Jewish Bavarian realist painter\, born in 1895\, who fought in World War One and won the Iron Cross\, yet between 1930-37 secretly created a powerfully expressionist\, monumental anti-war and anti-fascist triptych called Thou Shalt Not Kill. Forced to dismember the work in 1937\, when facing imminent arrest\, he escaped Germany\, finally reaching England in 1939 with his family. It was only after her father’s death in 1971 that the artist’s daughter Ava Farrington began a search for the lost triptych and in 1998 that Simon first encountered the fragments of the painting that led to the publication of his book over twenty years later. \nThe event will be chaired by art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen\, initiator and director of the Insiders/Outsiders Festival. \nTo book\, click here. \nThis event is organized by Insiders/Outsiders. \n  \n\nThis event will be held on Zoom.
