SUMMARY:Insiders/Outsiders: The Concert
DESCRIPTION:New North London Synagogue\, Finchley\nA celebration of the musical contribution of refugees from Nazi Europe to British culture \nFor this concert\, NNLS members Ashley Solomon\, Maurice Chernick and Shirli Gilbert will work with Norbert Meyn (Royal College of Music) and Ensemble ÉMIGRÉ to celebrate the contribution of refugees from Nazi Europe to British culture through music. \nThe programme will trace the lives of Jewish émigré musicians who managed to escape Nazi persecution and helped to bring music in Britain to the world-leading standards it enjoys today. It will include the Huyton Suite for flute and two violins by Hans Gál (1890-1987)\, written for the only instruments available in the Huyton Internment Camp near Liverpool in 1940\, the beautiful Elegy for Cello and Piano by the composer and piano virtuoso Franz Reizenstein (1911-1968)\, played by the wonderful Gemma Rosefield\, and excerpts from the breathtaking Tagebuch in Tönen (Diary in Music) by Robert Kahn\, a cycle of 1160 piano pieces written mostly in the composer’s secluded exile in Biddenden\, Kent in the 1940s\, played by the internationally acclaimed pianist Danny Driver. The programme will be complemented by short excerpts from letters and other historical documents chosen by Shirli Gilbert and Norbert Meyn. \nEnsemble ÉMIGRÉ unites musicians in flexible combinations under the directorship of tenor and project curator Norbert Meyn. The Ensemble’s repertoire is closely connected with the performance and research project ‘Singing a Song in a Foreign Land’ at the Royal College of Music and focuses on the work of composers who emigrated to Britain from Nazi Europe. \nThis concert is co-organised by Norbert Meyn and Rivka Gottlieb\, Director of Programming and Communications at NNLS and is kindly supported by John Reizenstein\, and is in partnership with the Sir Martin Gilbert Learning Centre. \nClick here to book tickets \n  \n\nSunday 10th November at 7.30pm.\nDoors open at 7.15pm.

SUMMARY:Schwitters Spoken Loud and Softly: Florian Kaplick live performance
DESCRIPTION:Florian Kaplick – photo ©Paul Yates\nHatton Gallery\, Newcastle upon Tyne\nIn a special event to mark the closing of Heather Ross’ installation The Loud and the Soft Speakers\, musician and performer Florian Kaplick (the main protagonist in Ross’s installation) will give a live performance of Kurt Schwitter’s two most iconic works. This will include a performance of Schwitters’ seminal sound poem The Ursonate (approx 40 mins) and a new interpretation of his famous poem An Anna Blume\, now celebrating its centenary year. This poem will be heard within a ‘recital collage’ created by Kaplick which references the work of American author Paul Auster. In three novels Auster uses a female character by the name of ‘Anna Blume’ in the very same spelling as Schwitters’ heroine of 1919. Intrigued by this and stimulated by the musical qualities of Auster’s writing\, Kaplick collages together excerpts from Auster’s novels with Schwitters’ poem – read in various languages – to form a new 20 minute performance. DESCRIPTION:Hans Keller\, drawing by Milein Cosman\nWigmore Hall\, Marylebone\, London\nRecollections of Hans Keller \n  \n2019 sees the centenary of the birth of the remarkable musician\, writer\, broadcaster\, critic\, teacher\, psychologist and football enthusiast Hans Keller\, who was a central figure in British musical life from the 1940s to the 1980s. \n  \nProgramme: \n11:00 am Who is Hans Keller? by Dr Alison Garnham & Panel Discussion  \nHans Keller’s biographer Alison Garnham gives an introductory lecture\, followed by a panel discussion chaired by Keller’s friend and long-term colleague Julian Hogg. Panel includes Jane Gillie\, Christopher Hailey\, Bayan Northcott and Hugh Wood. \n£10 \n2.30 pm Music workshop based on Hans Keller’s analysis of Mozart K421  \nIn the late 1950s Hans Keller devised a wordless form of musical analysis to demonstrate the ‘unity of contrasting themes’ within a single work. He composed fifteen such ‘functional analyses’. \nUsing Keller’s detailed analysis of the piece\, students from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama work with Levon Chilingirian and Keller’s literary executor Christopher Wintle on Mozart’s D minor quartet from the set dedicated to Haydn. \n£10 \n6:00 pm Film Screening: The Keller Instinct   \nA rare screening of a documentary film first shown on Channel 4 in 1986 that offers a personal view of Hans Keller at the end of his life and includes commentary from many distinguished musicians\, presented by the clarinettist Anton Weinberg\, friend and pupil of Keller. The film has been specially re-mastered for the centenary\, and Anton Weinberg will introduce this special screening. \n£5 \n7:30 pm Elias String Quartet \nIn 1945\, a chance hearing of Britten’s new opera Peter Grimes set the young Hans Keller on a new path as a writer on music. One of his first articles was the controversial ‘Britten and Mozart’\, outlining striking similarities in the two composers’ creative characters. In tonight’s concert\, Britten’s second quartet\, written shortly after the premiere of Grimes\, is heard alongside Mozart’s quartet in D minor\, K.421\, Keller’s analysis of which features in today’s music workshop. After the interval\, the Elias Quartet will play one of Beethoven’s last and most searching contributions to the medium\, the quartet in B flat\, Op.130\, on which Keller wrote and lectured many times in his later years. \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)\nString Quartet in D minor K421\nBenjamin Britten (1913-1976)\nString Quartet No. 2 in C Op. 36 \nINTERVAL \nLudwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)\nString Quartet in B flat Op. 130 with Grosse Fuge Op. 133 \nA work by a contemporary composer Keller consistently championed – Britten’s lucid Second Quartet of 1945 – is heard between the second of Mozart’s quartets dedicated to Haydn and one of Beethoven’s last and most searching contributions to the medium £18-£40 \n  \nThis event is part of a series celebrating Hans Keller’s centenary: see Hans Keller 100

On display will be a selection of the intimate portraits\, recently donated to the Royal College of Music Museum\, which offer an unparalleled glimpse into the rich musical culture of 20th-century Britain. \nThis evening of art\, music and history celebrates the donation to the Royal College of Music of Milein Cosman’s collection of drawings of musicians. The Milein Cosman collection has been generously donated to the RCM by the artist.
