SUMMARY:From Internee to Art Collector: Tribute to Ruth Borchard
DESCRIPTION:Born near Hamburg in 1910\, the writer Ruth Borchard came as a German-Jewish refugee to Britain in 1938. As an ‘enemy alien’ in wartime she was imprisoned first in Holloway Prison\, then interned in Rushen women’s camp on the Isle of Man. Her fictionalised memoir We Are Strangers Here: An Enemy Alien in Prison in 1940\, only published after her death\, provides a rare insight into life as a refugee in Holloway Prison. \nBetween 1958 and 1971 she amassed a superb collection of over 100 self-portraits by British-based artists\, well-known and less well-known\, which provides a fascinating overview of British portraiture in the mid-twentieth century \nAfter her death in 2000\, the collection was transferred to a charitable trust to become the Original Ruth Borchard Collection\, under the custodianship of Piano Nobile. In 2011 a biennial self-portrait prize was set up in her name\, with a selection of submitted works acquired for the Next Generation Collection. SUMMARY:An Insistence on Freedom: A Celebration of Siegfried Charoux’s Life & Work

Charoux preparing for RA Summer exhibition\, attributed to Keystone Press © Charoux-Archive\, LANGENZERSDORF MUSEUM\nHampstead Garden Suburb \n\nPostponed from Sun\, 16 May 2021 due to COVID \n  \nDue to ongoing concerns about COVID\, this event will now take place online. \nThis unique event will be held in émigré sculptor Siegfried Charoux’s former studio in Hampstead Garden Suburb\, London\, NW11\, which has only rarely been opened to the public since his death in 1967. \nThe session will explore Charoux’s commitment to artistic and civil liberties. In the first part the current owners and custodians of the studio will share the story of their discovery of the building and its history\, and their careful restoration of it\, influenced by the spirit of place and by Charoux’s philosophy. Afterwards\, Dr Melanie Veasey will explore Charoux’s Austrian secessionist identity\, cultural influences and émigré encounters and how\, post-war\, his British residency and citizenship led to the development of his revolutionary sculpture practice and politically-inspired iconic British public sculptures\, amongst these The Islanders exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951. \nMelanie Veasey is an art historian\, studying twentieth-century art and visual culture in Britain. She is particularly interested in figurative sculpture and the diversification of public patronage of the arts. Melanie holds a PhD in Art History\, the title of her thesis was ‘Reforming Academicians’\, Sculptors of the Royal Academy of Arts\, c.1948-1959. DESCRIPTION:In her memoir Send me a Parcel with a Hundred Lovely Things\, Carry Gorney considers how her own life was shaped by her refugee antecedents’ experience of displacement and reinvention – ordinary people caught up in extraordinary times. The book includes extracts from her parents’ letters\, revealing a historic resentment and suspicion of refugees and a unique picture of the internment camps on the Isle of Man. \nThe latter will form the focus of this online event\, which will comprise a dramatised reading by two professional actors of some of these moving extracts. \nIn Carry’s own words: “working over many years as an artist\, film maker\, writer and psychotherapist. I have used creative arts to create and enhance communities by linking lives. SUMMARY:Second World War Internment in the UK – September 1939 to July 1940
DESCRIPTION:Before war was formally declared\, British intelligence was already gathering lists of potentially dangerous ‘enemy aliens’ who held German or Austrian citizenship. Small numbers of arrests were made in the days before Britain declared war against Germany\, and these arrests continued as Germans and Austrians living in the UK went before tribunals\, but only for those categorised as A (the other two categories being B – subject to restrictions but remaining at liberty and C – genuine refugees from Nazi oppression). \nIt was not until May 1940\, when Britain was at very real risk of invasion\, that internment policy drastically changed. The East and South Coasts were declared to be ‘protected areas’\, and foreign nationals living in those areas arrested and interned. Soon afterwards\, all Category Bs were rounded up\, whether male or female\, with some children included. In June and July\, men who were Category C were also arrested. \nThis talk by historian Rachel Pistol\, author of Internment During the Second World War: A Comparative Study of Great Britain and the USA (2017) and co-editor of British Internment and the Internment of Britons: Second World War Camps\, History and Heritage (forthcoming\, with Bloomsbury)\, will examine the first nine months of internment\, from the earliest camps on the UK mainland to the establishment of semi-permanent camps on the Isle of Man\, including the controversial transport abroad scheme that sent five ships to Canada and Australia\, only four of which arrived at their planned destinations. \nThis event is held in partnership with Jewish Renaissance magazine. \nTo book\, click here. \nImage: Warth Mills\, situated in the Redvales area of Bury on the River Irwell\, pictured in the late 1800s. DESCRIPTION:Meet in the forecourt outside Wagamama\, 58-62\, Heath Street\, London\, NW3 1EN \n  \nIn this walking tour we’ll discover the revolutionary Modernist homes and idealistic architecture built in Hampstead in the 1930s onwards \nIn this walking tour discover the revolutionary Modernist homes and idealistic architecture built in Hampstead in the 1930s such as The Sun House by Maxwell Fry\, and 66 Frognal by Connell Ward and Lucas. Much of the architecture echoed design trends in Europe and the walk includes passing housing by the émigré architects Ernst Freud and Erno Goldfinger. Elements of eighteenth-century architectural design were also an influence for some architects. \nPassing some more recent examples and of course striking non modernist Hampstead buildings\, this walk will finish at the iconic and idealistic Isokon flats in Belsize Park which were famous in the 1930s for enabling Bauhaus designers to live here to escape the Nazi regime. \nPlease note that the Isokon Gallery should be open but allows only 6 in at a time. SUMMARY:Sara Davidmann: My Name is Sara
DESCRIPTION:My name is Sara draws upon themes of family\, post-memory and the Holocaust. \nSara Davidmann discovered a family album of photographs and handwritten notes in German (never before translated)\, that tell a story her father was never able to tell – of the German Jewish side of her family. \nDavidmann’s father\, Manfred\, and his sister Susi survived the Holocaust by escaping from Berlin on the Kindertransport\, arriving in Britain in 1939. \nThe photo-album belonged to Davidmann’s aunt Susi. Early photographs show a family life of seaside holidays\, weddings and Berlin outings – a family Davidmann had not known existed. \nRealising that many of these people did not reappear in photographs taken after World War II she searched for traces of their lives. She uncovered over 130 pages of Nazi and official documents. These revealed that family members were deported to\, and murdered\, in concentration camps at Auschwitz and Theresienstadt. Others survived by escaping to Shanghai and France\, and by living hidden in Berlin with false documents. \nAt the same time – parallel to making these discoveries\, Davidmann used photography and video to make artworks using the material she was uncovering. Recognisable objects – hair\, family photographs and Nazi documents appear in the artworks – only to be disrupted by elements of fire and erasure. This is the first exhibition of this work.” \nAn artist’s book\, Mischling 1\, published by GOST\, accompanies the exhibition. DESCRIPTION:The Rodd\, Presteigne\, Herefordshire \nThis lecture by art historian and Insiders/Outsiders founder Monica Bohm-Duchen will set the powerful Colour of the Sky – Auschwitz Paintings by Sidney Nolan on view at The Rodd from 13 August in a broader context by considering those artists – most but not all of them Jewish –  who from the late nineteenth century onwards\, but above all in the shadow of World War Two and the Holocaust\, chose to represent Jesus as the Jew he historically was\, and as an emblem of Jewish suffering in the present. \nThe lecture will be given live in the gallery (free with admission to the exhibition)\, but a recording will be made available after the event. DESCRIPTION:The City of London \n\nFollow in a virtual tour through the City of London discovering public art by first generation refugees and immigrants to Britain.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe City of London has always been home to immigrant communities. This walks winds its way through the City streets and highlights immigrants who made a mark here in a literal way as it is home to some of their sculptures and reliefs. We will discover the first official public sculpture\, the Monument which was carved by Caius Gabriel Cibber a Danish immigrant; a drinking fountain by French refugee\, Aimé-Jules Dalou; mosaics by Russian born Boris Anrep and perhaps the most significant contribution of sculptures are by a number of refugees from Nazi Europe who settled in the UK such as Naomi Blake\, Frank Meisler\, Oscar Nemon and Georg Ehrlich. The tour finishes with the most recent sculpture\, Unity\, 1992 by a Croatian refugee from former Yugoslavia\, Ivan Klapez. \n\n\nThis is a live virtual tour hosted via Zoom video conferencing where your guide will give an illustrated presentation of the tour route with an accompanying talk. Much of the architecture echoed design trends in Europe and the walk includes passing housing by the émigré architects Ernst Freud and Erno Goldfinger. Elements of eighteenth-century architectural design were also an influence for some architects. \nPassing some more recent examples and of course striking non modernist Hampstead buildings\, this walk will finish at the iconic and idealistic Isokon flats in Belsize Park which were famous in the 1930s for enabling Bauhaus designers to live here to escape the Nazi regime. \nPlease note that the Isokon Gallery should be open but allows only 6 in at a time. SUMMARY:Arthur\, Ernestine and Marianne Segal: Painting\, Education and Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Arthur Segal\, The Artist’s Hand\, 1941\, Guildhall Art Gallery\nOnline Event \n\nIn 1936 refugee artist and educator Arthur Segal (1875-1944) founded his ‘Painting School for Professionals and Non-Professionals’ in Bloomsbury with his wife Ernestine and daughter Marianne\, having fled Berlin in 1933. The Segals taught using a set of ‘objective principles of painting’ that Arthur had formulated during the 1920s which\, in a rejection of pre-WW1 Expressionism\, focused on representing subjects from life naturalistically by focusing on light\, form and colour. Rooted in convictions about the inherent value of art making and the ‘learnability’ of painting\, the school taught amateur as well as professional artists\, and\, with much support from Ernestine and Marianne\, Arthur also developed an early form of art therapy in Britain. \nForming partnerships with psychoanalysts and psychiatrists\, he disseminated his ideas about art’s therapeutic uses in these circles and gave painting lessons to adults and children for psychological purposes. During the war\, the school also ran a programme for Members of the Forces under the Army Education Scheme. In this talk\, Imogen Wiltshire will discuss Segal’s approach to art making\, the mechanisms and networks through which the family established themselves socially and professionally\, and the contributions they made to art education and therapeutic care in Britain. \nDr Imogen Wiltshire is an art historian specialising in modern and contemporary art\, based at the University of Leicester. Featured are prize winning students from the Fashion Communication and Design for Textiles programmes from the School of Textiles & Design\, Heriot-Watt University. SUMMARY:Avram Stencl: The Yiddish Poet of Whitechapel
DESCRIPTION:Online Event \n\nThis illustrated talk by Rachel Lichtenstein examines the life and work of London’s foremost Yiddish poet Avram Nachum Stencl (1897–1983) who was born in Poland in the late nineteenth century into a rabbinical dynasty. In 1921 he settled in Berlin and began publishing his poetry\, which attracted the attention of the literary elite\, including Thomas Mann. \nAfter narrowly escaping the Gestapo he arrived in London in 1936 and spent the rest of his life passionately dedicated to the preservation of the Yiddish language. Stencl became one of the most familiar figures of Jewish Whitechapel\, standing outside the lecture halls\, meeting places and cafes\, crying out\, koyfts a heft! – Buy a pamphlet. He established the longest running literary group in the UK but is now practically unknown. \nCome and learn more about this extraordinary figure. Her artwork has been widely exhibited both in the UK and internationally. Royalton-Kisch\, 1950 Courtesy of The Gustav Metzger Foundation\n108A Boundary Rd\, Camden\, London NW8 0RH\nThe Ben Uri Research Unit (BURU)\, in partnership with The Gustav Metzger Foundation\, is delighted to announce Becoming Gustav Metzger: Uncovering the Early Years (1945-59). This is the first museum exhibition to examine the little-known formative years of refugee artist and activist Gustav Metzger (Nuremberg\, Germany 1926 – London\, England 2017). The sixth in BURU’s survey exhibitions highlighting the important contribution of Jewish and immigrant artists to British visual culture since 1900\, the exhibition showcases some 40 rarely seen drawings and paintings from this crucial early period – the majority never previously exhibited – together with related archival material. Highlights include Metzger’s Portrait of Frank Auerbach (c.1952) and the large expressionist oils The Dissolution of the City (1946) and Eroica\, Funeral March (1946)\, as well as early abstract works on board and cardboard\, and a Kodak box. Together they chart Metzger’s artistic journey from figuration to abstraction prior to the development of his later radical auto-destructive practice. \nBen Uri. DESCRIPTION:Hans Feibusch\, Crucifixion\, 1951 (detail)\, St.John’s Church\, Waterloo\nConference (face-to-face\, with online option) \n\nA groundbreaking one-day conference called ‘A Jewish Jesus: Art and Faith in the Shadow of World War II’. \nThis is being organised by St. John’s Waterloo\, home to two major paintings by émigré artist Hans Feibusch\, in association with Insiders/Outsiders and Art+Christianity. \nHow did a German-Jewish refugee artist come to be responsible for more murals in Church of England churches than any other artist in its entire history? Who were the other Jewish artists employed by the Church or using Christian iconography in the post-war period? And what has become of their work today? SUMMARY:Huguenot Refugee Art and Culture
DESCRIPTION:William Hogarth\, Noon\, (detail)\, 1738\nOnline Event \n\nHistorian and curator Tessa Murdoch will examine the extraordinary international networks resulting from the diaspora of more than 200\,000 refugees who left France in the late 17th century to join communities already in exile spread far and wide. First-generation Huguenot refugees included hundreds of trained artists\, designers\, and craftsmen. Beyond the French borders\, they raised the quality of design and workshop practice\, passing on skills to their apprentices; sons\, godsons\, cousins\, and to successive generations\, who continued to dominate output in the luxury trades. \nAlthough silver and silks are the best-known fields with which Huguenot settlers are associated\, their significant contribution to architecture\, ceramics\, design\, clock and watchmaking\, engraving\, furniture\, woodwork\, sculpture\, portraiture\, and art education provides fascinating insight into the motivation and resolve of this highly skilled diaspora. Thanks to a sophisticated network of Huguenot merchants\, retailers\, and bankers who financed their production\, their wares reached a global market. \nDr.Tessa Murdoch FSA is Research Curator\, Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection\, Victoria and Albert Museum. Tessa has forty years curatorial experience at the Museum of London from 1981 and at the V&A since 1990. Tessa is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries\, a trustee of the Huguenot Museum\, Rochester and of the Idlewild Trust. SUMMARY:Sanctuary in the City: Public Art by Refugees and Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:Online Tour \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe City of London has always been home to immigrant communities. This walks winds its way through the City streets and highlights immigrants who made a mark here in a literal way as it is home to some of their sculptures and reliefs. We will discover the first official public sculpture\, the Monument which was carved by Caius Gabriel Cibber a Danish immigrant; a drinking fountain by French refugee\, Aimé-Jules Dalou; mosaics by Russian born Boris Anrep and perhaps the most significant contribution of sculptures are by a number of refugees from Nazi Europe who settled in the UK such as Naomi Blake\, Frank Meisler\, Oscar Nemon and Georg Ehrlich. SUMMARY:Hope after catastrophe: The Art of Dante Elsner
DESCRIPTION:Online Event \n\nArtist potter and painter\, Dante Elsner (1920-1997)\, escaped the rounding up of Jews in Poland during the war years\, and survived by hiding in the forest after his family were murdered in two different death camps. After the war\, on the point of suicide in Paris\, he came across Rembrandt’s portrait of Hendrickje Stoffels in the Louvre. He later said that this painting saved his life: he saw the love with which Rembrandt had painted this woman\, and it convinced him that there was a reason to fight to live. \nHe devoted the rest of his life to painting and to studio pottery\, in Paris (1948-58) and in London (1958-1997). Inspired by the teachings of George Gurdjieff\, aspects of Sufism\, Jewish mysticism and Zen Buddhism\, Dante developed an art practice involving a series of daily meditations and spiritual exercises\, and a life philosophy that offered an alternative to despair. Always mistrustful of authorities and institutions – as he learned in the forest that to trust anyone was to end up dead – he did not exhibit his work. It has remained\, despite recent efforts by the Elsner family\, largely unknown\, kept in two sheds near their family home in Oxford. \nThe talk will be given by Dante’s granddaughter\, Maia Elsner\, whose debut poetry collection\, overrun by wild boars (forthcoming with flipped eye in July 2021) explores the nature of intergenerational memory in the context of trauma\, and gestures towards healing through the possibilities of hope. \nTo book\, click here.

SUMMARY:Leonhard Adam: ‘Dunera Boy’\, Lawyer\, Anthropologist and Artist
DESCRIPTION:Leonhard Adam\, Tatura Camp\, Australia\, 1942\nOnline Talk \n\nBorn in Berlin in 1891\, Leonhard Adam was rising to prominence as a judge and an expert on international tribal law and culture when the Nazis’ enforcement of a law in 1933 aryanizing all the professions stripped him of his position. Receiving a warning that his name had appeared on a list of academics to be “liquidated”\, he left Berlin for London. This was in 1938. \nAdam had been visiting Britain and lecturing at colleges\, universities and at the Royal Anthropological Institute since 1934\, which meant that he had established an invaluable network of connections. This enabled him to find a job in the UK and to continue to give lectures. During this time he was also working on his best-selling Penguin book\, Primitive Art\, published in 1942. \nHe was\, in fact\, in the process of re-establishing himself in Britain when he was arrested\, interned and sent into exile on the “Dunera” in 1940 – the ship which sailed from Liverpool to Australia\, overloaded with 2\,500 refugee internees\, Nazi prisoners and crew in catastrophic conditions. \nArriving in Australia\, Adam was interned at Tatura\, in northern Victoria. There he and other academic internees founded a university called “Collegium Taturensis”. He was released after a year and a half to teach at The University of Melbourne\, as well as to document the Sir Baldwin Spencer Collection of Aboriginal Objects at the National Museum of Victoria. Fluent in several languages including Punjabi and Mandarin Chinese\, he would also become the first teacher of Mandarin at The University of Melbourne. \nMuch of his life experiences have also been documented in his paintings\, including pictures of Tatura internment camp\, the dramatic scenery of Central Australia and\, much earlier\, delightful sketches and paintings of London. \nIn her talk\, Mary-Clare Adam\, Leonard’s daughter\, will highlight the dramatic events in his life on two continents before and after the two World Wars. \nTo book\, click here.
