Drawing By Milein Cosman\, by kind permission of the estate of Milein Cosman\nThe Menuhin Hall\, Cobham\, Surrey\nA celebration of Hans Keller by the Yehudi Menuhin School\, where Keller taught chamber music in the 1980s. \n3:15 pm : Pre-Concert Talk\nThe renowned pedagogue Hans Keller taught chamber music at the School at the invitation of Yehudi Menuhin\, and made significant contributions to musicology and music criticism throughout his life. This pre-concert talk begins with a contextual introduction by Dr Alison Garnham\, followed by an outline of Keller’s analytical style by Dr Òscar Colomina i Bosch\, including examples of his practice based on Keller’s Functional Analysis. David Dolan works with pupils from The Yehudi Menuhin School to illustrate how Keller’s approach inspires his performance practice at the School\, with specific focus on Mozart’s String Quartet No 15 in D minor K421. \n(Running time – 1hr 15mins)\nTICKETS: £5 \n5 pm : Showcase Concert\nThis Showcase Concert focuses on the string quartets of Mozart and Haydn\, about which Hans Keller wrote to great acclaim. DESCRIPTION:The V&A Museum of Childhood\, Bethnal Green\, London\nSeeing Daylight: The Photography of Dorothy Bohm \n  \nDorothy Bohm has been photographing for over 70 years. When fleeing the rise of Nazism aged 13 she was given a camera by her father as a parting gift; she wouldn’t see her father for another two decades. Since then she has become one of Britain’s most eminent photographers. Seeing Daylight is a 2017 documentary\, directed by Richard Shaw\, about her practice\, how she learned photography\, what drives her to photograph and how her images changed photography. \nScreening includes a private viewing of the exhibition Little Happenings: photographs of Children by Dorothy Bohm\, which closes on 17 March\, and a Q&A with Dorothy’s daughter Monica Bohm-Duchen. \n  \n\n  \n6.30pm \n

DESCRIPTION:Daunt Books\, Hampstead\nIn the mid-1930s\, three giants of the international Modern movement\, Bauhaus professors Walter Gropius\, Marcel Breuer and László Moholy-Nagy\, fled Nazi Germany and sought refuge in Hampstead in Britain’s most exciting new apartment block. \nThe hugely influential Lawn Road Flats\, or Isokon building\, was commissioned by visionary couple Jack and Molly Pritchard and designed by architect Wells Coates. Isokon and the Bauhaus in Britain (Batsford) by Leyla Daybelge and Magnus Englund tells the extraordinary story of Isokon\, and how its network of residents helped shape modern Britain. DESCRIPTION:Donnersberger Strasse in the Niederrad Siedlung\nThe Gallery\, 70 Cowcross St\, London\nÉmigré Artists in Britain after 1933 \nSpeaker: Monica Bohm-Duchen \nMonica Bohm-Duchen is an independent art historian and initiator of the nationwide arts festival\, Insiders/Outsiders: Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Culture. She has edited a book of the same title (Lund Humphries) and will consider the experiences of the artists who found refuge in this country from Nazi persecution\, examining not only their achievements and their legacy\, but also the challenges – not to say obstacles – they faced on their arrival. \nTalk starts at 6.30pm \n  \n\nLooking beyond the Bauhaus: Modernism sans frontières \nIn 2019\, the centenary of the Bauhaus is a major event with many exhibitions and publications. Yet this seems likely to add to the large existing pile of information based on only a small part of the actual achievements and aspirations of Modernism during the period of its existence. DESCRIPTION:Birkbeck Cinema\, London\nHaunted by History: Session Two \nA selection of recent essay films – poignant\, thought-provoking\, sometimes darkly humorous and frequently disturbing – made by UK-based members of the so-called ‘Second Generation’\, namely\, the children of refugees from Nazi Europe and/or Holocaust survivors\, whose work explores the complex and necessarily problematic legacy of their families’ experiences. \nThis session we are excited to screen Four Parts of a Folding Screen (83 mins\, 2018) directed by Anthea Kennedy and Ian Wiblin. \nBased on documents found in Berlin archives\, Four Parts of a Folding Screen explores exclusion\, statelessness and the legalised theft and sale of everyday family possessions by the National Socialist regime. A voice\, enigmatic and sometimes uncertain\, foretells of\, relates and recalls the routine processes of injustice and their legacy: the creation of a diaspora of household objects\, scattered amongst buildings that no longer exist. As the camera probes the secrets of ordinary spaces\, streets and buildings around the city of Berlin\, semblances of a person and a history begin to emerge and coalesce. \nFollowing the screening Anthea and Ian will take part in a Q+A. \nThis event is organised in association with the Insiders/Outsiders Festival and the Essay Film Festival. \n  \n\n18:00 – 21:00 \n  \nSee also: Session One Haunted by History \n

Malcolm Singer (former Music Director of the Menuhin School who taught there when Keller was there) will introduce Keller the man and musical thinker\, together with Keller’s biographer Alison Garnham. Victims of both Nazi and Vichy laws\, French Jews were stripped of their property and excluded from every sphere of political\, social and economic life – a prelude to their physical elimination. Meanwhile\, during the Occupation of 1940-1944\, France’s art market thrived. Excitement swept through all the places were art works were sold: studios\, galleries and auction houses. Everyone came to Paris to snatch them up. Selling\, trafficking and trading art works\, which sometimes reached very high prices\, had consequences on the fate of works owned by Jewish art dealers\, whose shops or galleries were ‘aryanized’. \nThis is the first time an exhibition has examined networks of the art-market microcosm under German occupation on a journey that includes concrete examples\, unpublished historical documents and spoliated works of art. \nTo 3 November 2019\, daily 10am-6pm\, Thursdays to 10pm\, Free \nClosed Saturdays and 30 September\, 1\,9\,14 & 21 October \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Book Cover for ‘Albert Reuss in Mousehole\, The Artist As Refugee’\nRoyal Cornwall Museum\, Truro\nA Talk by Susan Soyinka\, Biographer \nAlbert Reuss (1889-1975) was a Jewish émigré artist. Born in Vienna\, he fled to England in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution\, losing family\, possessions and his reputation as an artist. In 1948\, he moved to Mousehole\, Cornwall\, where he continued to work as an artist\, but his style changed dramatically\, reflecting the trauma he had suffered. His works are held in numerous galleries world-wide\, including Newlyn Art Gallery. Soyinka here recounts this lonely and isolated artist’s struggle to develop his art and to survive\, a story full of human drama and tragedy\, set against the background of world historic events. \n\n6 -7pm

DESCRIPTION:Born in Prague in what was then Czechoslovakia\, Lord Dubs was one of 669 children saved from the Nazis on the Kindertransport\nMigration Museum at The Workshop\, London\nCome to the screening of a series of short films about the welcome and non-welcome experienced by young people who have migrated to the UK – from Syrian children on the Isle of Bute in Scotland\, to Iraqi Kurdish youth in Norwich\, to Eritreans in Harrow and Polish children in Sidmouth (“I really don’t understand scones!”). Hear from friends\, teachers\, lawyers\, religious leaders\, activists and therapists – as well as from the young people themselves – about the challenges faced\, and often overcome. Learn about those who are campaigning for legal and safe routes to the UK of unaccompanied children in Europe as well as the implications of Brexit. \nThe films will be followed by a discussion led by a panel of speakers featured in the films. London Transport\, under the direction of Chief Executive Frank Pick\, commissioned many of the best of these émigré designers to produce some of the most distinctive posters on the network. \nThe Museum’s Poster Parade of twenty posters celebrates four decades of their work\, featuring well-known designers such as Hans Schleger (Zero)\, Hans Unger and László Moholy-Nagy. It reflects their contribution to what is considered a golden age of poster design.

DESCRIPTION:Freud Museum\, London\nDrawing on a wealth of still and video archival materials\, this new digital exhibit brings to life the fascinating intersection of psychoanalysis and education. \nOut of the cultural and political ferment of inter-war Vienna emerged the Hietzing School\, founded in the 1920s by Anna Freud and Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham. The original impulse\, however\, occurred in Budapest\, on September 28 1918\, when Sigmund Freud asserted that “the conscience of society will awake.” Anna Freud was present for one of the most consequential papers of Freud’s career\, and from that day forward\, she pursued a life of teaching and discovery that merged psychoanalysis\, research on child development and programs designed to meet the educational and psychological needs of the young child. \nThe breadth of the film’s images come from a range of private and public collections in Europe and America\, and narrative is drawn from her own writing on theory and practice\, from the 1920s through the 1960s\, from Vienna to London. \n\n3-4pm \nTicket includes entrance to the Museum \nFree to Members and Patrons

DESCRIPTION:Margaret Gardiner outside the Pier Arts Centre\, 1980s\nPier Arts Centre\, Orkney\, Scotland\nMargaret Gardiner was born on 22 April 1904. An early activist against fascism and war\, in 1936 she became honorary secretary of For Intellectual Liberty\, a rallying point throughout the Second World War for writers\, artists and academics in active defence of peace\, liberty and culture. \nGardiner gifted her unique collection of art\, which charts the development of British Modernism\, to the people of Orkney\, establishing the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness in 1979. She continued to visit the islands well into her nineties\, and died in London on 2 January 2005\, aged one hundred. \nA Life of Giving includes letters\, publications and photographs relating to the life and legacy of Margaret Gardiner.

DESCRIPTION:Maurice Blik Plasters\nSculpt Gallery\, Gt. Braxted\, Essex\nAn exhibition of artist’s plasters of recent sculptures to celebrate the artist’s Eightieth Birthday. The exhibition will also include original sketches and limited edition etchings. Born in Amsterdam\, Holland in 1939 and having survived Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as a child\, Maurice Blik arrived in the UK aged seven with two surviving female members of his family. The ability to come to terms with this and to confront the face of humanity that he had witnessed\, stayed silent in him for some forty years until it found a voice in the passionate and exquisite sculpture he began to produce in the late 1980s.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Hutchinson Guest rehearsing L’Apres-Midi d’un Faune for the Royal Ballet with dancers Zenaida Yanovsky and Carlos Acosta\nThe Place\, Euston\, London\nEvery year The Laban Guild celebrates the legacy of Rudolf Laban through a lecture from a leading academic or practitioner who actively promotes the work and heritage of this modern dance pioneer\, who took refuge in the UK from Germany in 1938. DESCRIPTION:Henriette with Dog and Flowers\, New Walk Gallery\, Leicester\nNew Walk Museum and Gallery\, Leicester\nIn Search of an Audience: the Painter Marie-Louise von Motesiczky in Exile \nAustrian Expressionist artist Marie-Louise von Motesiczky (1906-1996) was a pupil of Max Beckmann\, and arrived in England as an émigré artist in the 1930s\, settling in Hampstead. \nThis special gift includes four oil paintings\, drawings\, a sketchbook and a tender portrait of the artist’s mother Henriette\, from 1967. \n  \n\nSpecial lecture on the artist by Dr Ines Schlenker \n2.30pm. \nTickets available from the museum shop.

SUMMARY:Showcasing Art History: Britain ∩ Europe
DESCRIPTION:The Courtauld Institute of Art\, London\nEncounters in Art: Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Visual Culture \nThis series investigates a particularly significant episode in the long history of British art’s relations with the Continent. These lectures will take a close and critical look at the experiences of the émigré artists who came to this country after Hitler’s accession to power in 1933\, examining not only their achievements and influence\, but also the challenges – not to say obstacles – they faced on arrival. \nThe series will open with an introductory lecture providing a broader cultural and political context for the lectures to follow. SUMMARY:Hampstead in the 1930s – A Walking Tour + Visits
DESCRIPTION:Ernö Goldfinger: 2 Willow Road\, NW3\nMeet: Hampstead Underground Station\nLed by Monica Bohm-Duchen for Martin Randall Travel \n10am-c.5.30pm \n  \nAs the abundance of wall plaques in the area demonstrates\, visual artists have been drawn to the physical and cultural attractions of Hampstead since the late eighteenth century. This London day\, however\, concentrates on artistic life in Hampstead in the 1930s\, the period in which it occupied a unique place in the story of British art and architecture. This was in large measure due to the number of talented émigrés from Nazi-dominated Europe who found refuge here\, and the British individuals who welcomed and worked alongside them. \nAt Burgh House & Hampstead Museum\, a private view of selected items from the era and an introductory lecture set the scene. A walk through Frognal before lunch is testament to the pioneering work of modernist architects such as Maxwell Fry and Ernst Freud. In the afternoon\, we walk via Downshire Hill (home to Fred and Diana Uhlman\, Roland Penrose and Margaret Gardiner)\, to the Isokon Building in Lawn Road\, where by special arrangement we visit the former garage\, now a small gallery devoted to the colourful history of these flats\, whose tenants included Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer as well as Agatha Christie and a significant number of Communist spies. After taking a look at the Mall Studios\, home to what Herbert Read memorably described as a ‘gentle nest of artists’\, among them Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson\, and the building which was briefly home to Piet Mondrian\, the day ends with a visit to the modernist house that Hungarian-born Ernö Goldfinger built for himself nearby 2 Willow Road. \nMid-morning refreshments\, lunch and tea provided. \nBook this tour at Martin Randall Travel \n  \nSee also: Hampstead Walk (September) and George Adams – Bauhausler in Britain
