SUMMARY:The Freuds in Hampstead Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Hampstead\, London\nExplore the memories of the Freud family in Hampstead in this walk led by Blue Badge Guide Rachel Kolsky. \nSigmund Freud escaped Nazi occupied Vienna in 1938 to ‘die in freedom’ and his home in Hampstead became a magnet for other European refugees. But he was not the only Freud to leave his mark in NW3. \nThis walking tour profiles Sigmund and his friends\, his daughter Anna whose work with children continues to this day in Maresfield Gardens and his son\, Ernst\, an architect whose modernist houses remain as a testament to his talent.

SUMMARY:Kurt Schwitters’ Ursonate performed by Florian Kaplick
DESCRIPTION:Florian Kaplick en route to the site of Hutchinson Camp\, Isle of Man\nCample Mill\, Thornhill\, Dumfriesshire\nAs part of CAMPLE LINE’s Summer 2019 Edition\, Florian Kaplick will perform Kurt Schwitters’ sound poem Ursonate\, a vocal piece consisting of four movements\, an overture and finale. \nSchwitters began writing Ursonate in 1922 and first performed it in 1925 before publishing it in 1932 as ‘Sonate in Urlauten’ (Sonata in Primordial Sounds). Comprising repeated abstract sounds that involve physical vocal performance\, Schwitters noted: ‘The fourth movement\, long-running and quick\, comes as a good exercise for the reader’s lungs.’ Kaplick will also read some shorter Schwitters poems in English/German\, including a new interpretation of Schwitters’ famous poem An Anna Blume (1919).\nKaplick will give the performance within the context of the summer exhibitions: DOUBLE ACT by David Osbaldeston and FARM WEEDS by Charlie Hammond. Further programme details. \nA musician and performance artist as well as a psychiatrist and lecturer\, Florian Kaplick has a special interest in Schwitters’ sound poetry. \n  \n\n5pm \nFree: Booking advised \nTelephone: 01848 331 000 (Thurs–Sat\, 11am–5pm)

SUMMARY:The Laban Summer School
DESCRIPTION:Rudolf Laban in his workshop at Darlington Hall in 1938. Photo: Reproduced from The Laban Art of Movement Guild Magazine\, December 1954\nUniversity of Bedfordshire\, Bedford Campus\nEvery year The Laban Guild holds a Summer School which explores the work of modern dance pioneer Rudolf Laban in a contemporary context. \nThe work of Laban\, who took refuge in the UK from Germany in 1938\, gained great popularity in dance and physical education and still plays a key role in actor training. This year lead tutor Anna Carlisle offers a day based on Further Laban Studies for more experienced practitioners\, followed by site specific choreography\, while Cathy Washbrooke will offer a variety of sessions for those newer to Laban’s work. Other experienced Laban-based practitioners contributing to the course include Darren Royston\, Rhyan Parry and Uma O’Neill.

SUMMARY:Hampstead's Pioneers of Modern Art
DESCRIPTION:Blue plaque to Lee Miller and Roland Penrose\, 21 Downshire Hill. Photo: Marilyn Greene\n\nMeet at Hampstead Tube Station\nIn the first half of the 20th Century Hampstead was home to some of the era’s most pioneering artists. We will walk in the footsteps of the Slade School artists such as Mark Gertler\, Stanley Spencer and R.W. Nevinson who socialised in Downshire Hill with the artistic Carline family. \nWe will hear of their loves\, hates and reactions to the First World War. A small diversion will take us to the Vale of Health where the former Vale of Health Hotel was situated and we will see the site of the old Hampstead fairground painted by both Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler. In Downshire Hill we will also discuss the role that Roland Penrose\, Margaret Gardiner and Fred and Diana Uhlman played in the art world in the years leading up to\, and during\, the Second World War. We walk to Belsize Park to learn of the Modernists including Henry Moore\, Piet Mondrian and Barbara Hepworth whom Herbert Read described as living as a “nest of gentle artists” and conclude with the refugee designers who stayed at the Isokon flats before moving to pastures new. \nThe walk is led by guide and art historian\, Marilyn Greene \n  \n\nThe walk duration: two and a half hours.

SUMMARY:Brave New Visions
DESCRIPTION:The Émigrés who transformed the British Art World\nCharles and Peter Gimpel of Gimpel Fils Ida Kar\, 1958 © National Portrait Gallery\, London\nThis major new exhibition\, open from 17 July to 9 August\, tells the story of the pioneering émigré dealers and publishers who revolutionised Britain’s art world. \nBrave New Visions shows how in bleak post-war London\, a group of émigrés who had found sanctuary in Britain in the 1930s re-made their lives and introduced avant-garde European and British artists such as Naum Gabo\, Oskar Kokoschka\, Kurt Schwitters\, Graham Sutherland and Ben Nicholson to the broader public. \nFeaturing over 40 paintings and sculptures\, alongside unique documentary material\, the exhibition reveals the little-explored narrative that binds the founders of what are now some of the best known establishments on the London art scene\, including Marlborough Fine Art\, Crane Kalman Gallery\, Annely Juda Fine Art and Gimpel Fils. \nFellow émigrés Béla Horovitz and Ludwig Goldscheider at Phaidon\, and Walter Neurath and Eva Feuchtwang at Thames & Hudson\, led a parallel revolution in the staid world of British publishing. They provided an international platform for European scholarship in affordable and seminal art books such as Ernst Gombrich’s best-selling The Story of Art and the World of Art Library while raising standards of design and reproduction. \nThe Brave New Visions catalogue written by Cherith Summers; foreword by Sue Grayson Ford\, edited by Monica Bohm-Duchen is available here. \nBrave New Visions is free and open to the public Monday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm\, Sotheby’s\, St George Street Gallery 1-2 St George Street\, London W1S 2FE. \n  \n \nBrave New Visions: films\nInterviews filmed by Andrew Snell\, assisted by Eileen Hughes. \nInterviews conducted by Sue Grayson Ford. \nWatch here \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nOpening panel discussion\nVideo\, from Sotheby’s in London\, celebrating the exhibition Brave New Visions\, which pays homage to the pioneering émigré dealers who revolutionised Britain’s art world. SUMMARY:Brave New Visions
DESCRIPTION:Andras Kalman & Standing Form 1954 by Graham Sutherland\nSotheby’s\, St George Street Gallery\n\nThe Émigrés who transformed the British Art World \nIn bleak\, war-damaged 1940s London\, British gallery-goers had barely adjusted to Post-Impressionism\, let alone the challenges posed by Picasso. Then everything changed. A group of émigrés\, who had fled Nazi Europe\, resolved to embrace the future and introduce avant-garde European and British artists to the public and press. Until then artists like Wassily Kandinsky\, Oskar Kokoschka\, Naum Gabo\, Graham Sutherland and Francis Bacon were scarcely known in Britain. The Pioneering dealers who transformed the London gallery scene included Lea Bondi Jaray\, Erica Brausen\, Henry Roland\, Gustav Delbanco\, Andras Kalman\, Frank Lloyd\, Harry Fischer\, Annely Juda and Charles and Peter Gimpel. Key paintings and sculptures by the artists they championed will tell the story of their galleries: St George’s; Roland\, Browse & Delbanco; Hanover; Gimpel Fils; Marlborough Fine Art; Crane Kalman; Molton; Hamilton and Annely Juda Fine Art. Their influence and impact was profound – and remains so. \nFellow émigrés led a parallel revolution in the staid world of British publishing\, providing a platform for European scholarship in affordable art books which raised standards of design and reproduction. Phaidon and Thames & Hudson remain leaders in this field. \nThe Brave New Visions catalogue written by Cherith Summers; foreword by Sue Grayson Ford\, edited by Monica Bohm-Duchen is available here. \n  \n\n  \nMonday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm\, Free

SUMMARY:Insiders/Outsiders - An Evening with Monica Bohm-Duchen and Sir Norman Rosenthal
DESCRIPTION:Insiders/Outsiders Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Visual Culture Edited by Monica Bohm-Duchen Hardback\, 256 Pages\, Size: 270 × 228 mm\, 144 colour illustrations ISBN: 9781848223462\, Publication: March 01\, 2019\nInsiders/Outsiders\, published to accompany a nationwide arts festival of the same name\, examines the extraordinarily rich and pervasive contribution of refugees from Nazi-dominated Europe to the visual culture\, art education and art-world structures of the United Kingdom. In every field\, émigrés arriving from Europe in the 1930s – supported by a small number of like-minded individuals already resident in this country – introduced a professionalism\, internationalism and bold avant-gardism to a British art world not known for these attributes.\nAt a time when the issue of immigration is much debated\, the book serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural cross-fertilization and of the deep\, long-lasting and wide-ranging contribution that refugees make to British life. \nIndependent art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen\, initiator and Creative Director of the Insiders/Outsiders Festival and contributing editor to the companion volume\, will be in conversation with Sir Norman Rosenthal\, Exhibitions Secretary of the Royal Academy of Arts\, London between 1977 and 2008\, to discuss their shared interest – both personal and professional – in the rich cultural terrain covered by the book. \nTicket price includes a glass of wine on arrival.

SUMMARY:In the Footsteps of Fred Uhlman: Art and Refugees in Hampstead
DESCRIPTION:Hampstead Tube Station\nFred Uhlman was born to a Jewish family in Germany where he practiced as a lawyer. With the rise of the Nazis in 1933\, he moved to France where as he was not allowed to practice law\, he supported himself by privately selling his art work. In 1936\, he met a wealthy English woman\, Diana Croft and later that year moved to England and married her. They settled in Downshire Hill\, Hampstead in 1938. In this walk we discover how together they formed the Artists Refugee Committee to rescue artists trapped in Czechoslovakia\, about how their house became a refuge for artists and about the organisations that they were involved with. We visit sites Uhlman was known to frequent and discuss the role of his artistic friends and neighbours and consider other refugees who settled in Hampstead during this time. \n  \n\n3.00pm-5.00pm

SUMMARY:Drumstick
DESCRIPTION:Bonnie Bird Theatre\, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, Old Royal Naval College\, London\nDance performance of re-imagined “lost” Laban work\, Drumstick \nOver the last two years\, Alison Curtis-Jones\, Artistic Director of Summit Dance Theatre and Lecturer in Dance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, London. has been researching two ‘lost’ works\, Ishtar’s Journey into Hades and Dancing Drumstick\, both choreographed by Rudolf Laban in Monte Verità\, Switzerland\, in 1913. \nAs she herself states\, ‘My work aligns with Primavesi’s category of re-creation\, re-invention\, re-imagining or re-envisioning where an artist has more freedom to explore and develop their own viewpoint on the work and how the work might be… My re-imagined Drumstick is an attempt to show Laban’s shift to arbitrary rhythm – a materialisation of extreme and subtle dynamic changes\, where dancers establish their own felt rhythms and work together in unity without sound and make stillness resonate. Musicians accompany the dancers\, playing in response to what they see\, not the other way around; it’s not radical today\, but it was in 1913!’ \nBook online here.

SUMMARY:Émigré designers in the V&A’s Archive of Art and Design
DESCRIPTION:Sketchbook\, Tom Karen\, ca. 1997. © Victoria and Albert Museum\, London\nV&A\, London\nThe V&A’s Archive of Art and Design (AAD) is the UK’s leading collection of archives of applied art and design. It is a key destination for students\, scholars and enthusiasts who are investigating the lives of designers and other practitioners\, and the history of businesses and other organisations involved in applied art and design in Britain over the last two centuries. \nSome of the most important contributors to British design in the mid- and late-twentieth century were Jewish émigrés\, many of whom who escaped Nazi Germany in the 1930s or survived the persecution of the Second World War to make their homes in Britain in the 1940s. The working archives\, and some private papers\, of 28 Jewish designers and practitioners are represented in the AAD. Come along for a chance to hear about the life and work of some of these designers\, including Hans Schleger\, George Him\, Jacqueline Groag and Gaby Schreiber\, and to see a selection of their designs\, photographs and papers. \n  \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:'You\, me and those who came before': V&A
DESCRIPTION:Image credit: Judith Kerr\, photograph by Jillian Edelstein\nGrand Entrance\, V&A\, London\nThe series of portraits\, ‘You\, me and those who came before’\, commissioned by Counterpoints Arts\, celebrates first and second generation refugees\, including the late children’s author Judith Kerr in one of her last photographs\, politician Magid Magid and actor Zoe Wanamaker. \nA reminder that people escaping war and persecution have been welcomed by communities in the UK for hundreds of years\, and that their stories and contributions are all around us. \n\nAs part of  Refugee Week Festival 2019\, Counterpoint Arts commissioned the celebrated photographer\, Jillian Edelstein to respond to this year’s theme of the festival – ‘You\, me and those who came before’. \nThe result is a stunning series of portraits featuring first and second generation ‘refugees’\, many of whom are public figures who we would not commonly associate with displacement. \nFeaturing Jillain’s images and design by Counterpoint’s long-standing collaborators\, BCMH\, this project invites us to revisit our understanding of our history and reminds us that people escaping war and persecution have been welcomed by communities in the UK for hundreds of years\, and that their stories and contributions are all around us. From the Jewish refugees of the 1930s to people fleeing Somalia\, Rwanda\, Kosovo and Palestine in the 90’s to people arriving today from Syria and elsewhere; they are part of who we all are. \n‘You\, me and those who came before’ portrait project will be presented on screen at Tate Exchange (5th floor – 21st to 25th May)\, V&A (Main Entrance – 17th to 23rd June) and Southbank Centre (projected on the side of the building – 17th to 23rd June). The portraits will also be distributed as printed materials to Refugee Week organisers across the country.
