SUMMARY:Mann at War
DESCRIPTION:The Manx Museum\, Douglas\, Isle of Man\nThis new gallery at the Manx Museum reflects the role that the Island and its people have played in conflict from the 18th Century to present day. This includes civilian internment on the Isle of Man during two World Wars. Whilst internees during the First World War were held in a purpose-built camp of wooden huts and a pre-War holiday camp\, internees during the Second World War were held in requisitioned hotels and boarding houses surrounded by barbed wire. The permanent display includes art work produced in the camps\, as well as objects reflecting different aspects of life there\, including poignant objects such as a toy cat made by an interned child. \n

DESCRIPTION:Marianne Grant\, Pile of dead bodies\, Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp\, 1945\, watercolour on paper\, signed ‘MH/45’ Purchased with grant aid assistance from The Heritage Lottery Fund\, Art Fund and National Fund for Acquisitions\, 2004 PP.2005.38.35 © Marianne Grant Estate\nKelvingrove Museum\, Glasgow\nMarianne Grant was a Jewish artist and Holocaust survivor from Prague who settled in Glasgow after the end of World War II. She uniquely recorded in drawings her experiences of imprisonment in the concentration camp-ghetto Theresienstadt\, the Czech family camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau\, German slave labour camps and Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp. This small exhibition powerfully showcases examples of the drawings that Grant declared ‘saved my life’. \nThe Marianne Grant Holocaust Artworks Collection\, which comprises 77 artworks\, was purchased in 2004 with grant aid assistance from The Heritage Lottery Fund\, Art Fund and National Fund for Acquisitions. \n\nPermanent exhibition\, with annual rotation of artworks every January

SUMMARY:Lucie Rie: Ceramics and Buttons

Photo by Hil Sayer\nYork Art Gallery\nThe ceramics and buttons produced by one of the most respected potters of the 20th Century are on show in a major exhibition at the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) at York Art Gallery until 12 May 2019. \nDame Lucie Rie (1902-1995) is world renowned for her finely thrown and beautifully decorated functional domestic ceramics. But after she emigrated to the UK\, during the Second World War\, she began producing ceramic buttons for the fashion industry. \nThe exhibition will reveal the findings of new research into this less well-known area of Lucie’s practice\, displaying hundreds of her buttons alongside many examples of domestic wares she became celebrated for. \nThis will include more than 30 loans from a private collection which have never been on public display before.

During the First World War many of those who were interned had lived in Britain for years and had British families\, while many Second World War internees were refugees who had come to Britain as a safe haven from Nazi persecution in Europe. \nDiscover more about ‘life behind the wire’ and the different ways that interned artists recorded the world around them\, whether they were ‘living with the wire’ for a few months or several years\, in the National Art Gallery at the Manx Museum. \n \n

SUMMARY:The art market under the Occupation 1940-1944
DESCRIPTION:An auction at the Charpentier gallery in Paris\, June 1944. © LAPI/Roger-Viollet.\nMémorial de la Shoah\, 17 rue Geoffroy l’Asnier\, 75004 Paris\nIn the summer of 1941\, the French government began confiscating businesses\, real estate\, financial assets and art works from Jews across the country. Victims of both Nazi and Vichy laws\, French Jews were stripped of their property and excluded from every sphere of political\, social and economic life – a prelude to their physical elimination. Meanwhile\, during the Occupation of 1940-1944\, France’s art market thrived. Excitement swept through all the places were art works were sold: studios\, galleries and auction houses. Everyone came to Paris to snatch them up. Selling\, trafficking and trading art works\, which sometimes reached very high prices\, had consequences on the fate of works owned by Jewish art dealers\, whose shops or galleries were ‘aryanized’. \nThis is the first time an exhibition has examined networks of the art-market microcosm under German occupation on a journey that includes concrete examples\, unpublished historical documents and spoliated works of art. \nTo 3 November 2019\, daily 10am-6pm\, Thursdays to 10pm\, Free \nClosed Saturdays and 30 September\, 1\,9\,14 & 21 October \n  \n

SUMMARY:Margaret Gardiner – A Life of Giving
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Gardiner outside the Pier Arts Centre\, 1980s\nPier Arts Centre\, Orkney\, Scotland\nMargaret Gardiner was born on 22 April 1904. An early activist against fascism and war\, in 1936 she became honorary secretary of For Intellectual Liberty\, a rallying point throughout the Second World War for writers\, artists and academics in active defence of peace\, liberty and culture. \nGardiner gifted her unique collection of art\, which charts the development of British Modernism\, to the people of Orkney\, establishing the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness in 1979. She continued to visit the islands well into her nineties\, and died in London on 2 January 2005\, aged one hundred. \nA Life of Giving includes letters\, publications and photographs relating to the life and legacy of Margaret Gardiner.

DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Suschitzky\, Backyard\, Charing Cross Road 1936 © Wolfgang Suschitzky\nTate Britain\, London\nFollowing the rise of Fascism in Vienna in the 1930s\, brother and sister Edith Tudor-Hart (1908–73) and Wolfgang Suschitzky (1912–2016) found sanctuary in Britain\, where both became leading documentary photographers. Raised in an actively social democratic family of Jewish ancestry\, their images reflect the politics\, class structures and events of mid-twentieth century British life. Tudor-Hart’s subjects range from political protests in Vienna to initiatives for the working classes in late-1930s Britain. Suschitzky’s photographs focus on London as a varied\, vibrant city as its inhabitants lived through peace\, the Blitz and postwar celebrations. This display offers a rare opportunity to see a substantial group of photographs by brother and sister together.

Photographer unknown. 17 March 1935.\nPitt Rivers Museum\, Oxford\nThis display marks the eightieth anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War by highlighting the work of Ellen Ettlinger (née Rathenau) (1902-1994)\, a Jewish folklorist who was forced to flee Germany in 1938 due to persecution by the Nazi regime. She was born into a wealthy family which had set up the large electronics firm Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG); yet although members of the family were notable both as industrialists and politicians\, they increasingly fell foul of right-wing persecution due to being Jewish. A member of the Folklore Society\, this display shows Ellen’s research records\, organised according to place and category\, which she donated to the Pitt Rivers Museum in the mid-1960s. \nArchive Case\, First Floor

Photo credit Martin Nagler\nHove Museum & Art Gallery\, East Sussex\nFriedrich Nagler (1920 – 2009) was a Jewish émigré and self-taught artist born in Vienna\, Austria. He escaped Nazi occupation in 1938 and after being interned in England was deported to Canada as an ‘enemy alien’ by the British government. He returned after the war and settled in Petersfield\, Hampshire. Consumed by a passion for making\, Nagler created thousands of works of art\, some of which are inspired by his flight from Nazi-occupied Austria to England. \nThis project\, produced in partnership with award-winning arts charity Outside In\, will see never before seen works on display at Hove Museum and Art Gallery.

SUMMARY:The Bauhaus in Britain
DESCRIPTION:Tate Britain\nThis free display considers connections between Germany’s Bauhaus School (1919­–33) and the visual arts in Britain. It centres on the years 1934–6\, when the Bauhaus came into sharper focus in Britain through the presence of key publications and protagonists\, including Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy. Living and working for a few years in north London\, they encountered the likes of British artists Barbara Hepworth\, Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore. The display also highlights the work and experiences of lesser-known designers or teachers\, such as Naum Slutzky and Grete Marks\, who continued to live and work in Britain over the following decades. \n  \n\n10.00am – 6.00pm

DESCRIPTION:Cover for The Wonder World of the Seashore\, 1955\, with permission of Otto and Marie Neurath\, Isotype Collection at University of Reading\nThe House of Illustration\, King’s Cross\nHouse of Illustration celebrates Marie Neurath with an exhibition of ground-breaking graphic design that transformed children’s learning from the 1940s to today. \nMarie Neurath – an émigré graphic designer and author\, led a team at the Isotype Institute that produced over 80 illustrated children’s books from 1944-1971. The pioneering collaboration between researchers\, artists and writers produced infographics and illustrated diagrams to explain scientific concepts. \nThe exhibition will include spreads and working materials from book series that Marie Neurath produced\, including Wonder World of Nature and Wonders of the Modern World. \n  \n\nIn partnership with the University of Reading and Design Science\, supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council. The exhibition is part of Transforming science for young people: Marie Neurath and Isotype books for children\, a project aiming to find new audiences for the approach to science communication taken by Marie Neurath. \n

Her work was linked with both Käthe Kollwitz and the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement\, including Otto Dix and George Grosz. She settled in Manchester where she exhibited at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts\, and with the Manchester Group which included L S Lowry. DESCRIPTION:The Ken Stradling Collection\, Bristol\nThe Ken Stradling Collection is very pleased to be taking part in the international celebrations marking the centenary of the Bauhaus. \nThe Bauhaus in Bristol traces the story of the remarkable friendship between Bristol furniture manufacturer Crofton Gane and Marcel Breuer\, founding member of the Bauhaus in Germany and refugee. Begun in the 1930s and lasting their whole lives\, it put Bristol firmly on the Modernist map.  Furniture designed by Marcel Breuer and made in Bristol for Crofton Gane will be on display in the ground floor gallery alongside archive material and a model of the Breuer designed Gane’s Pavilion. \n  \nThe KSC Gallery is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11am – 4pm during the exhibition. \n  \nAlong side the exhibition we are presenting a number of exciting events which delve further into this fascinating story. SUMMARY:Art Aiding Politics: Hampstead in the 1930s and '40s

Copyright Eva Zimmermann\nBurgh House & Hampstead Museum\, London\nHampstead has been a place of refuge\, reflection and community for centuries. This exhibition aims to show the response of some of its most creative residents to the tumultuous political events of the early twentieth century; from the Spanish Civil War to the rise of the Nazi party and the outbreak of the Second World War and beyond. Including art and artefacts relating to Roland Penrose and Lee Miller\, Fred Uhlman\, Milein Cosman\, FHK Henrion and many others\, this exhibition will examine the artists’ reactions to these events\, and the communities of support that developed as a result.

SUMMARY:László Moholy-Nagy in Britain: Between the New Vision and the New Bauhaus
DESCRIPTION:First Floor Gallery\, RIBA\, London \nThis display draws on the RIBA’s unique holdings to demonstrate both the range of Moholy-Nagy’s British work and the strong ties that he established with modernist architects in Britain. \n\n\n\n\nLászló Moholy-Nagy was one of the most innovative artists and thinkers of the first half of the twentieth century. In 1937\, following his former Bauhaus colleague Walter Gropius\, he emigrated to Britain\, where he spent two intense years filled with commissions\, collaborations and artistic exchanges\, before finally moving to the United States. \nThis display focuses on a little known period of the artist’s career and includes an extensive selection of his British work\, mostly drawn from the RIBA’s own world famous collections and showcasing rarely seen photographs and examples of his graphic design projects. \nThe content of the display has been curated to complement the RIBA Architecture Gallery exhibition Beyond Bauhaus: Modernism in Britain 1933-1966. \nArchitectural Press Archive / RIBA Collections\n

This important exhibition marks two significant anniversaries: the twentieth year of refugee organisation GARAS and the introduction of the Kindertransport which\, between December 1938 and September 1939\, brought some 10\,000 Jewish refugee children to Britain. \nMigrations presents paintings\, drawings\, prints and sculpture from the Ben Uri Collection exploring three principal waves of migration to Britain: the first\, reflects the years\, c. 1880-1910\, when immigrants of principally Jewish Eastern-European descent\, settled in London’s East End\, including Ben Uri’s founder Russian-Jewish émigré Lazar Berson\, and members of the home-grown ‘Whitechapel Boys’\, among them painters David Bomberg and Mark Gertler\, and sculptor Jacob Epstein. \nThe second wave reflects the artistic contribution of the so-called ‘Hitler-émigrés’\, who between 1933 and 1945\, fled racial\, artistic or political persecution in their native lands. DESCRIPTION:Photograph of Marie-Louise von Motesiczky as a young woman wearing a hat\, gloves and a polka-dot blouse [c.1920s] Presented by the Trustees of the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Trust\, March 2012\nTate Britain\nThis free display covers the life and work of Marie-Louise von Motesiczky (including archives and artworks) alongside other émigrés who escaped Nazi Europe for the relative safety of Britain. It will trace Motesiczky’s family background in Vienna and her artistic beginnings\, including her tutelage under Max Beckmann and her first exhibition successes. Her journey into exile\, settling with her mother Henriette in Amersham\, will be covered as well as her friendships with other émigrés such as Oskar Kokokschka\, Marie Duras and Elias Canetti. Her membership of the Artists’ International Association\, her first solo exhibition in London in 1944 and subsequent struggles to be recognised here will also feature with wall cases outlining the conducive and supportive artistic post-war environment of Hampstead leading to recognition in this country and in Austria. \nIn addition to material relating to Kokokschka the display will be augmented by archival items and works of art relating to other émigré artists such as Charlotte Bondy and Milein Cosman.. \n  \n\nThe display is supported by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust. \nA related Show and Tell event is being held on the 1 November

DESCRIPTION:RNCM Concert Hall\nRoyal Northern College of Music\, Manchester\nMigration has been in the DNA of the RNCM from its earliest roots\, when in 1893 the German-born conductor Sir Charles Hallé realised his vision of founding a Northern conservatoire which became the Royal Manchester College of Music. Ever since then\, musicians have migrated to this city from all over the world to study\, teach and perform here. Move forward to 2019/20 and the RNCM now has over 950 students from 55 countries\, each with their own unique experience of migration. #wearemigrants celebrates the stories and creative output of musicians past and present who have left their homes\, through choice or necessity\, and explores the impact of migration on their music and on their adopted countries. \nFull list of Events

DESCRIPTION:Refugee from Ivory Coast © Nina Emet\nBrent Civic Centre\, London\n  \n \n20:20 is a multimedia\, touring arts and heritage project that casts a long lens over the personal memories of refugee families who arrived in the UK from 1999 onwards from Kosovo and other major global conflicts. \nSupported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund\, 20:20 is led by Salusbury World Refugee Centre and co-curated by FotoDocument and London College of Communication. The project collects and explores the oral histories of 20 refugees over 20 years\, creating artistic responses in the form of multimedia exhibitions and performance. \nThe stories focus on memories of homeland and agile adaptations to exile\, exploring resilience\, polyglotism and celebrating transnational culture in the UK. The artwork interprets the narratives through objects\, film\, illustration\, typography\, digital art\, animation\, motion design and graphic design – demanding a visceral audience response. \nSalusbury World is a visionary London refugee charity\, which has supported refugee children and their families for the past 20 years and 20:20 celebrates its 20th birthday. \nThe exhibition prototyped at the Victoria & Albert Museum in June 2019 and went on to be exhibited at London College of Communication in October as part of London Design Festival 2019. \n  \n\nSee also: \n31 October – 31 December 2019: Willesden Library \n

DESCRIPTION:John Heartfield\, The Hand Has 5 Fingers / With 5 You Seize the Enemy! / Vote List 5 / Communist Party! 1928\nFour Corners Gallery\, London\nAn exhibition of prints by the renowned photomontage artist John Heartfield. A pioneer of German agitprop and an early member of the Berlin Dada group\, Heartfield is known as the inventor of political photomontage. 33 of Heartfield’s scathingly satirical artworks against war\, fascism and the Third Reich will be on display. \nThis set of anti-Nazi photomontages was recently rediscovered in its original crumbling box in Liverpool John Moores University Library Archives. The exhibition will also display material produced by Heartfield during his time as a refugee in England between 1938 and 1950. \nOpening times: Tuesdays-Saturdays\, 11am-6pm\, Thursdays 11am-8pm. \nXmas break: closed 20 December reopens Tuesday 7 January 2020. \n  \nAdmission free.

DESCRIPTION:Marie-Louise von Motesiczky\nTate Library and Archive Reading Rooms\, Tate Britain\nTate Archive is a centre of excellence for the study of émigré artists\, writers and cultural figures who found safety in the UK following the rise of fascism in continental Europe before the Second World War. \nNow numbering over fifty archive collections\, they comprise all manner of correspondence\, personal photographs\, writings and ephemera\, which illustrate how lives and work were affected by the end of one way of life and the beginning of another. \nThis ‘Show and Tell’ event celebrates the halfway mark of a major project – generously funded by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust – to catalogue and digitise three such émigré collections. They comprise the extensive papers of art historian\, J. P. DESCRIPTION:Andras Kalman with Graham Sutherland’s Standing Figure 1954 © Crane Kalman Gallery\, London\nSotheby’s Institute\, London\nFollowing a very successful event co-orgainzed by TIAMSA and the Courtauld Alumni Association in 2018\, this afternoon symposium organised by TIAMSA and Sotheby’s Institute of Art London will explore the experiences\, impact and significance of those art dealers who fled Nazi Europe and set up in the UK before or during the Second World War. While the 2018 event focused on dealers active in the old master trade\, this symposium will look at those who worked with 20th century art. Their experience of dislocation changed the art world as well as the status of particular artists and artistic movements\, opening up channels for the dissemination of the new trends of the 1920s and 1930s. This event will combine short papers by experts in the field and a panel discussion which will contextualize the experiences and achievements of those who lived through these dramatic times. A refugee from Hitler’s Germany\, Erich Mendelsohn had already established an international reputation when he won the commission led by the 9th Earl De La Warr to design a new Pavilion for Bexhill. \nJoin us from 11.15am in the Rooftop foyer before the building tour for a short talk by Graham Whitham\, art historian and author of De La Warr Pavilion: A Short History. The workshop will be led by Gaby Glassman\, a psychologist and psychotherapist who has facilitated second generation and intergenerational groups in the UK and abroad since the 1980s. \nThis session is specifically for the Second Generation and involves personal participation.
