SUMMARY:Brave New Visions
DESCRIPTION:Andras Kalman & Standing Form 1954 by Graham Sutherland\nSotheby’s\, St George Street Gallery\n\nThe Émigrés who transformed the British Art World \nIn bleak\, war-damaged 1940s London\, British gallery-goers had barely adjusted to Post-Impressionism\, let alone the challenges posed by Picasso. Then everything changed. A group of émigrés\, who had fled Nazi Europe\, resolved to embrace the future and introduce avant-garde European and British artists to the public and press. Until then artists like Wassily Kandinsky\, Oskar Kokoschka\, Naum Gabo\, Graham Sutherland and Francis Bacon were scarcely known in Britain. The Pioneering dealers who transformed the London gallery scene included Lea Bondi Jaray\, Erica Brausen\, Henry Roland\, Gustav Delbanco\, Andras Kalman\, Frank Lloyd\, Harry Fischer\, Annely Juda and Charles and Peter Gimpel. Key paintings and sculptures by the artists they championed will tell the story of their galleries: St George’s; Roland\, Browse & Delbanco; Hanover; Gimpel Fils; Marlborough Fine Art; Crane Kalman; Molton; Hamilton and Annely Juda Fine Art. Their influence and impact was profound – and remains so. \nFellow émigrés led a parallel revolution in the staid world of British publishing\, providing a platform for European scholarship in affordable art books which raised standards of design and reproduction. Phaidon and Thames & Hudson remain leaders in this field. \nThe Brave New Visions catalogue written by Cherith Summers; foreword by Sue Grayson Ford\, edited by Monica Bohm-Duchen is available here. \n  \n\n  \nMonday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm\, Free

DESCRIPTION:The Émigrés who transformed the British Art World\nCharles and Peter Gimpel of Gimpel Fils Ida Kar\, 1958 © National Portrait Gallery\, London\nThis major new exhibition\, open from 17 July to 9 August\, tells the story of the pioneering émigré dealers and publishers who revolutionised Britain’s art world. \nBrave New Visions shows how in bleak post-war London\, a group of émigrés who had found sanctuary in Britain in the 1930s re-made their lives and introduced avant-garde European and British artists such as Naum Gabo\, Oskar Kokoschka\, Kurt Schwitters\, Graham Sutherland and Ben Nicholson to the broader public. \nFeaturing over 40 paintings and sculptures\, alongside unique documentary material\, the exhibition reveals the little-explored narrative that binds the founders of what are now some of the best known establishments on the London art scene\, including Marlborough Fine Art\, Crane Kalman Gallery\, Annely Juda Fine Art and Gimpel Fils. \nFellow émigrés Béla Horovitz and Ludwig Goldscheider at Phaidon\, and Walter Neurath and Eva Feuchtwang at Thames & Hudson\, led a parallel revolution in the staid world of British publishing. They provided an international platform for European scholarship in affordable and seminal art books such as Ernst Gombrich’s best-selling The Story of Art and the World of Art Library while raising standards of design and reproduction. \nThe Brave New Visions catalogue written by Cherith Summers; foreword by Sue Grayson Ford\, edited by Monica Bohm-Duchen is available here. \nBrave New Visions is free and open to the public Monday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm\, Sotheby’s\, St George Street Gallery 1-2 St George Street\, London W1S 2FE. \n  \n \nBrave New Visions: films\nInterviews filmed by Andrew Snell\, assisted by Eileen Hughes. \nInterviews conducted by Sue Grayson Ford. \nWatch here \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nOpening panel discussion\nVideo\, from Sotheby’s in London\, celebrating the exhibition Brave New Visions\, which pays homage to the pioneering émigré dealers who revolutionised Britain’s art world. SUMMARY:Hampstead's Pioneers of Modern Art
DESCRIPTION:Blue plaque to Lee Miller and Roland Penrose\, 21 Downshire Hill. Photo: Marilyn Greene\n\nMeet at Hampstead Tube Station\nIn the first half of the 20th Century Hampstead was home to some of the era’s most pioneering artists. We will walk in the footsteps of the Slade School artists such as Mark Gertler\, Stanley Spencer and R.W. Nevinson who socialised in Downshire Hill with the artistic Carline family. \nWe will hear of their loves\, hates and reactions to the First World War. A small diversion will take us to the Vale of Health where the former Vale of Health Hotel was situated and we will see the site of the old Hampstead fairground painted by both Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler. In Downshire Hill we will also discuss the role that Roland Penrose\, Margaret Gardiner and Fred and Diana Uhlman played in the art world in the years leading up to\, and during\, the Second World War. We walk to Belsize Park to learn of the Modernists including Henry Moore\, Piet Mondrian and Barbara Hepworth whom Herbert Read described as living as a “nest of gentle artists” and conclude with the refugee designers who stayed at the Isokon flats before moving to pastures new. \nThe walk is led by guide and art historian\, Marilyn Greene \n  \n\nThe walk duration: two and a half hours.

DESCRIPTION:Jewish Museum London\, 129-131 Albert Street\, London\nIn 2019\, to commemorate 80 years since the rescue of our fathers\, grandfathers\, uncles\, and other relatives\, we have created an exhibition about the remarkable Kitchener camp rescue. \nThe exhibition draws on some of the hundreds of materials kindly shared by descendant families with the Kitchener camp project. \nThese images and this mobile exhibition are to be donated to London’s Wiener Library for the Study of the Holocaust\, so the materials can be kept safe for families and historians. \n\nThe ten exhibition banners will be set up in the auditorium of the London Jewish Museum on 1 September 2019. \nThe Kitchener exhibition will be free of charge and open to the public from 10am to 12.00pm. \nTickets are not available for this free morning exhibition – just turn up on the day! \nKitchener exhibition – afternoon event – Tickets only! \nJust before lunch\, the exhibition will close to the public and we will have a light buffet lunch set up. \nPeople with pre-booked tickets may then re-enter the auditorium space for lunch. We are arranging some talks and three workshops. There should be time for you to attend two of the three workshops\, should you wish to do so. \nThe museum closes at 5pm promptly\, so we will need to say our goodbyes at 4.30pm. \nTickets are £20 for adults and £10 for students (with ID) / children. \nAn observation: children might not find the afternoon event especially interesting – it is aimed at an adult audience. \nCo-sponsored by The Association of Jewish Refugees

SUMMARY:Conference: The Mad Silkman: Zika & Lida Ascher: Textiles and Fashion
DESCRIPTION:u(p)m: The Museum of Decorative Arts\, Prague\nIn response to the positive reception the exhibition The Mad Silkman. Zika & Lida Ascher: Textiles and Fashion has enjoyed in the Czech Republic and abroad\, among scholars and the general public alike\, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague has decided to host an international conference. Experts from the United Kingdom\, France\, the United States\, the Czech Republic and other countries have accepted invitations. Talks will be divided into sections covering history\, art\, textiles\, fashion and current student projects. The conference will also look at migration and how it can contribute to society. \n\nZika and Lida Ascher left Prague in early 1939 for the UK. There Zika Ascher launched a silk business that was soon thriving – and began approaching top artists\, including Matisse and Henry Moore\, to produce designs for a special collection of scarves\, the Ascher Squares. Many of them\, and other exquisite pieces produced by the company\, are on show as part of an extensive exhibition in Prague. Radio interview with Peter Ascher. \nConference held under the auspices of H.E. Nick Archer\, British Ambassador to the Czech Republic\, and Eva Zažímalová\, President of the Czech Academy of Sciences\, with the participation of Peter Ascher. \n“On hearing Zika Ascher’s life story\, I knew at once that the British Embassy had to be part of the celebration of his achievements at u(p)m in this\, our centenary year. Britain gave him a second chance when he was forced to leave his mother country. He paid us back handsomely\, with a flowering of his talent there which produced some of the most stunning fabrics of the century and a great textile business\, the legacy of which we now celebrate. Anglo-Czech creativity at its best. We are proud to support this magnificent exhibition\, and the contemporary work of students of Pavel Ivancic’s design studio reinterpreting Ascher fabrics. This year the British Embassy is celebrating 100 years since its opening in Prague’s Thun Palace. The Embassy has supported the exhibition as part of its #STOLET campaign of cultural activities\,” says Nick Archer\, the British ambassador to the Czech Republic. \nFor registration and more information\, please click here

SUMMARY:Hampstead in the 1930s – A Walking Tour + Visits
DESCRIPTION:Ernö Goldfinger: 2 Willow Road\, NW3\nMeet: Hampstead Underground Station\nLed by Monica Bohm-Duchen for Martin Randall Travel \n10am-c.5.30pm \n  \nAs the abundance of wall plaques in the area demonstrates\, visual artists have been drawn to the physical and cultural attractions of Hampstead since the late eighteenth century. This London day\, however\, concentrates on artistic life in Hampstead in the 1930s\, the period in which it occupied a unique place in the story of British art and architecture. This was in large measure due to the number of talented émigrés from Nazi-dominated Europe who found refuge here\, and the British individuals who welcomed and worked alongside them. \nAt Burgh House & Hampstead Museum\, a private view of selected items from the era and an introductory lecture set the scene. A walk through Frognal before lunch is testament to the pioneering work of modernist architects such as Maxwell Fry and Ernst Freud. In the afternoon\, we walk via Downshire Hill (home to Fred and Diana Uhlman\, Roland Penrose and Margaret Gardiner)\, to the Isokon Building in Lawn Road\, where by special arrangement we visit the former garage\, now a small gallery devoted to the colourful history of these flats\, whose tenants included Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer as well as Agatha Christie and a significant number of Communist spies. After taking a look at the Mall Studios\, home to what Herbert Read memorably described as a ‘gentle nest of artists’\, among them Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson\, and the building which was briefly home to Piet Mondrian\, the day ends with a visit to the modernist house that Hungarian-born Ernö Goldfinger built for himself nearby 2 Willow Road. \nMid-morning refreshments\, lunch and tea provided. \nBook this tour at Martin Randall Travel \n  \nSee also: Hampstead Walk (May 2019) and George Adams – Bauhausler in Britain

SUMMARY:20:20 Stories of Moving Lineage
DESCRIPTION:Refugee from Ivory Coast © Nina Emet\nLondon College of Communication\, London\n  \n \n20:20 is a multimedia\, touring arts and heritage project that casts a long lens over the personal memories of refugee families who arrived in the UK from 1999 onwards from Kosovo and other major global conflicts. \nSupported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund\, 20:20 is led by Salusbury World Refugee Centre and co-curated by FotoDocument and London College of Communication. The project collects and explores the oral histories of 20 refugees over 20 years\, creating artistic responses in the form of multimedia exhibitions and performance. \nThe stories focus on memories of homeland and agile adaptations to exile\, exploring resilience\, polyglotism and celebrating transnational culture in the UK. The artwork interprets the narratives through objects\, film\, illustration\, typography\, digital art\, animation\, motion design and graphic design – demanding a visceral audience response. \nSalusbury World is a visionary London refugee charity\, which has supported refugee children and their families for the past 20 years and 20:20 celebrates its 20th birthday. \nThe exhibition prototyped at the Victoria & Albert Museum in June 2019 and went on to be exhibited at London College of Communication in October as part of London Design Festival 2019. \n  \n\nIt is currently being exhibited at the following two venues until 14th February 2019:\n31 October 2019 – 14 February 2020: Brent Civic Centre\n31 October – 31 December 2019: Willesden Library \n
