The books that he published include momentous titles such as Lolita\, Double Helix\, The Group and The Hedgehog and the Fox\, with authors he championed ranging from Joan Didion\, Mary McCarthy\, Golda Meir and Edna O’Brien to Henry Miller\, Harold Wilson\, Saul Bellow and Henry Kissinger. \nIn this first\, newly-published biography\, acclaimed author Thomas Harding provides a full\, unvarnished and at times difficult history of this complex and fascinating character. SUMMARY:The Photographs of Zygmunt Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Cultural historian Janet Wolff will introduce a less well-known aspect of the career of eminent sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. \nPolish-born Zygmunt Bauman\, who settled in the UK in 1971\, is known internationally as the sociologist of postmodernity and ‘liquid’ society. But he was also a serious photographer. The Photographs of Zygmunt Bauman\, a new publication edited by Janet Wolff and Peter Beilharz\, presents a selection of his black-and-white photographs\, together with a range of essays by colleagues\, friends and family about his work with images. The book features a mixture of short pieces on individual photographs and longer essays addressing aspects of Bauman’s photography and the life and work of his wife\, Janina. The book concludes with an essay by Karl Dudman\, one of the Baumans’ grandchildren\, based on a series of photographs he took in the family home shortly after his grandfather’s death in 2017. \nJanet Wolff is Emeritus Professor in English and American Studies at the University of Manchester. SUMMARY:Creative Sanctuary: Refugees at Dartington in the 1930s and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:An online symposium on 20-21 October exploring the little-known fact that Dartington Hall in Devon was an important place of sanctuary for refugees from Fascist Europe.  \nDartington Hall\, established by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst in the late 1920s as a utopian agricultural and educational experiment\, became a much-needed place of refuge for a significant number of eminent creative individuals\, who because of their Jewish background and/or anti-fascist stance\, were forced to leave Germany (and later\, Austria) after 1933.
