DESCRIPTION:The Rodd\, Presteigne\, Herefordshire \nThis lecture by art historian and Insiders/Outsiders founder Monica Bohm-Duchen will set the powerful Colour of the Sky – Auschwitz Paintings by Sidney Nolan on view at The Rodd from 13 August in a broader context by considering those artists – most but not all of them Jewish –  who from the late nineteenth century onwards\, but above all in the shadow of World War Two and the Holocaust\, chose to represent Jesus as the Jew he historically was\, and as an emblem of Jewish suffering in the present. \nThe lecture will be given live in the gallery (free with admission to the exhibition)\, but a recording will be made available after the event. SUMMARY:Sara Davidmann: My Name is Sara
DESCRIPTION:My name is Sara draws upon themes of family\, post-memory and the Holocaust. \nSara Davidmann discovered a family album of photographs and handwritten notes in German (never before translated)\, that tell a story her father was never able to tell – of the German Jewish side of her family. \nDavidmann’s father\, Manfred\, and his sister Susi survived the Holocaust by escaping from Berlin on the Kindertransport\, arriving in Britain in 1939. \nThe photo-album belonged to Davidmann’s aunt Susi. Early photographs show a family life of seaside holidays\, weddings and Berlin outings – a family Davidmann had not known existed. \nRealising that many of these people did not reappear in photographs taken after World War II she searched for traces of their lives. She uncovered over 130 pages of Nazi and official documents. These revealed that family members were deported to\, and murdered\, in concentration camps at Auschwitz and Theresienstadt. Others survived by escaping to Shanghai and France\, and by living hidden in Berlin with false documents. \nAt the same time – parallel to making these discoveries\, Davidmann used photography and video to make artworks using the material she was uncovering. Recognisable objects – hair\, family photographs and Nazi documents appear in the artworks – only to be disrupted by elements of fire and erasure. This is the first exhibition of this work.” \nAn artist’s book\, Mischling 1\, published by GOST\, accompanies the exhibition. DESCRIPTION:Meet in the forecourt outside Wagamama\, 58-62\, Heath Street\, London\, NW3 1EN \n  \nIn this walking tour we’ll discover the revolutionary Modernist homes and idealistic architecture built in Hampstead in the 1930s onwards \nIn this walking tour discover the revolutionary Modernist homes and idealistic architecture built in Hampstead in the 1930s such as The Sun House by Maxwell Fry\, and 66 Frognal by Connell Ward and Lucas. Much of the architecture echoed design trends in Europe and the walk includes passing housing by the émigré architects Ernst Freud and Erno Goldfinger. Elements of eighteenth-century architectural design were also an influence for some architects. \nPassing some more recent examples and of course striking non modernist Hampstead buildings\, this walk will finish at the iconic and idealistic Isokon flats in Belsize Park which were famous in the 1930s for enabling Bauhaus designers to live here to escape the Nazi regime. \nPlease note that the Isokon Gallery should be open but allows only 6 in at a time. SUMMARY:Second World War Internment in the UK – September 1939 to July 1940
DESCRIPTION:Before war was formally declared\, British intelligence was already gathering lists of potentially dangerous ‘enemy aliens’ who held German or Austrian citizenship. Small numbers of arrests were made in the days before Britain declared war against Germany\, and these arrests continued as Germans and Austrians living in the UK went before tribunals\, but only for those categorised as A (the other two categories being B – subject to restrictions but remaining at liberty and C – genuine refugees from Nazi oppression). \nIt was not until May 1940\, when Britain was at very real risk of invasion\, that internment policy drastically changed. The East and South Coasts were declared to be ‘protected areas’\, and foreign nationals living in those areas arrested and interned. Soon afterwards\, all Category Bs were rounded up\, whether male or female\, with some children included. In June and July\, men who were Category C were also arrested. \nThis talk by historian Rachel Pistol\, author of Internment During the Second World War: A Comparative Study of Great Britain and the USA (2017) and co-editor of British Internment and the Internment of Britons: Second World War Camps\, History and Heritage (forthcoming\, with Bloomsbury)\, will examine the first nine months of internment\, from the earliest camps on the UK mainland to the establishment of semi-permanent camps on the Isle of Man\, including the controversial transport abroad scheme that sent five ships to Canada and Australia\, only four of which arrived at their planned destinations. \nThis event is held in partnership with Jewish Renaissance magazine. \nTo book\, click here. \nImage: Warth Mills\, situated in the Redvales area of Bury on the River Irwell\, pictured in the late 1800s. DESCRIPTION:In her memoir Send me a Parcel with a Hundred Lovely Things\, Carry Gorney considers how her own life was shaped by her refugee antecedents’ experience of displacement and reinvention – ordinary people caught up in extraordinary times. The book includes extracts from her parents’ letters\, revealing a historic resentment and suspicion of refugees and a unique picture of the internment camps on the Isle of Man. \nThe latter will form the focus of this online event\, which will comprise a dramatised reading by two professional actors of some of these moving extracts. \nIn Carry’s own words: “working over many years as an artist\, film maker\, writer and psychotherapist. I have used creative arts to create and enhance communities by linking lives. Charoux preparing for RA Summer exhibition\, attributed to Keystone Press © Charoux-Archive\, LANGENZERSDORF MUSEUM\nHampstead Garden Suburb \n\nPostponed from Sun\, 16 May 2021 due to COVID \n  \nDue to ongoing concerns about COVID\, this event will now take place online. \nThis unique event will be held in émigré sculptor Siegfried Charoux’s former studio in Hampstead Garden Suburb\, London\, NW11\, which has only rarely been opened to the public since his death in 1967. \nThe session will explore Charoux’s commitment to artistic and civil liberties. In the first part the current owners and custodians of the studio will share the story of their discovery of the building and its history\, and their careful restoration of it\, influenced by the spirit of place and by Charoux’s philosophy. Afterwards\, Dr Melanie Veasey will explore Charoux’s Austrian secessionist identity\, cultural influences and émigré encounters and how\, post-war\, his British residency and citizenship led to the development of his revolutionary sculpture practice and politically-inspired iconic British public sculptures\, amongst these The Islanders exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951. \nMelanie Veasey is an art historian\, studying twentieth-century art and visual culture in Britain. She is particularly interested in figurative sculpture and the diversification of public patronage of the arts. Melanie holds a PhD in Art History\, the title of her thesis was ‘Reforming Academicians’\, Sculptors of the Royal Academy of Arts\, c.1948-1959. SUMMARY:From Internee to Art Collector: Tribute to Ruth Borchard
DESCRIPTION:Born near Hamburg in 1910\, the writer Ruth Borchard came as a German-Jewish refugee to Britain in 1938. As an ‘enemy alien’ in wartime she was imprisoned first in Holloway Prison\, then interned in Rushen women’s camp on the Isle of Man. Her fictionalised memoir We Are Strangers Here: An Enemy Alien in Prison in 1940\, only published after her death\, provides a rare insight into life as a refugee in Holloway Prison. \nBetween 1958 and 1971 she amassed a superb collection of over 100 self-portraits by British-based artists\, well-known and less well-known\, which provides a fascinating overview of British portraiture in the mid-twentieth century \nAfter her death in 2000\, the collection was transferred to a charitable trust to become the Original Ruth Borchard Collection\, under the custodianship of Piano Nobile. In 2011 a biennial self-portrait prize was set up in her name\, with a selection of submitted works acquired for the Next Generation Collection. DESCRIPTION:Meet in the forecourt outside Wagamama\, 58-62\, Heath Street\, London\, NW3 1EN \n  \n  \nDiscover the revolutionary Modernist homes and idealistic architecture built in Hampstead in the 1930s such as The Sun House by Maxwell Fry\, and 66 Frognal by Connell Ward and Lucas. Much of the architecture echoed design trends in Europe and the walk includes passing housing by the émigré architects Ernst Freud and Erno Goldfinger. Elements of eighteenth-century architectural design were also an influence for some architects. \nPassing some more recent examples and of course striking non modernist Hampstead buildings\, this walk will finish at the iconic and idealistic Isokon flats in Belsize Park which were famous in the 1930s for enabling Bauhaus designers to live here to escape the Nazi regime. \nPlease note that this is the last day that the Isokon Gallery is open for the season. DESCRIPTION:The City of London \n\n\nThe City of London has always been home to immigrant communities. This walks winds its way through the City streets and highlights immigrants who made a mark here in a literal way as it is home to some of their sculptures and reliefs. We will discover the first official public sculpture\, the Monument which was carved by Caius Gabriel Cibber a Danish immigrant; a drinking fountain by French refugee\, Aimé-Jules Dalou; mosaics by Russian born Boris Anrep and perhaps the most significant contribution of sculptures are by a number of refugees from Nazi Europe who settled in the UK such as Naomi Blake\, Frank Meisler\, Oscar Nemon and Georg Ehrlich. The tour finishes with the most recent sculpture\, Unity\, 1992 by a Croatian refugee from former Yugoslavia\, Ivan Klapez. \nThis is a live virtual tour hosted via Zoom video conferencing where your guide will give an illustrated presentation of the tour route with an accompanying talk. DESCRIPTION:Walking Tour \n\n\n\n\nDiscover the experimental 20th century architectural homes in a stroll through Highgate Village\, Waterlow Park and the Holly Lodge Estate\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiscover some of Highgate’s twentieth century housing developments in this historic walk through Highgate. We will pass Lubetkin’s iconic High Point flats\, learn about Highgate’s early history\, walk through Waterlow Park and learn of it conception\, pass Highgate Cemetery where Karl Marx is buried and explore Abraham Davis’s Holly Lodge Estate and Walter Segal’s 1950s St Anne’s Close. \nStarts opposite the Woodman Pub\, Archway Road\, finishes at Parliament Hill Fields at the bottom of Swain’s Lane.
