SUMMARY:Sanctuary and Exile: Sara’s Last Steps
DESCRIPTION:Calgarth Estate\, Troutbeck Bridge\, Windermere\n\nA slow participatory walk in the Lake District exploring layers of erasure\, separation and reunion. The walk hosted by artists Richard White and Lorna Brunstein traverses the site of a WW2 workers housing estate near Windermere. In 1945 part of the site was requisitioned for a group of Jewish child Holocaust refugees\, ‘the Windermere Children’. The walk traces the final steps of a Jewish mother parted from her children at the Auschwitz selection point\, transposed to the former Calgarth Estate. Sara’s Last Steps forms part of a cycle of work\, Sanctuary and Exile\, commissioned by the Lake District Holocaust Project. \n  \nRegistration in advance for the walk is essential. Photo: Marilyn Greene\nMeet at Hampstead Tube Station\nIn the first half of the 20th Century Hampstead was home to some of the era’s most pioneering artists. We will walk in the footsteps of the Slade School artists such as Mark Gertler\, Stanley Spencer and R.W. Nevinson who socialised in Downshire Hill with the artistic Carline family. \nWe will hear of their loves\, hates and reactions to the First World War. A small diversion will take us to the Vale of Health where the former Vale of Health Hotel was situated and we will see the site of the old Hampstead fairground painted by both Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler. In Downshire Hill we will also discuss the role that Roland Penrose\, Margaret Gardiner and Fred and Diana Uhlman played in the art world in the years leading up to\, and during\, the Second World War. We walk to Belsize Park to learn of the Modernists including Henry Moore\, Piet Mondrian and Barbara Hepworth whom Herbert Read described as living as a “nest of gentle artists” and conclude with the refugee designers who stayed at the Isokon flats before moving to pastures new. \nThe walk is led by guide and art historian\, Marilyn Greene \n  \n\nThe walk duration: two and a half hours.

DESCRIPTION:Belvedere Court (1938) by refugee architect\, Ernst Freud\nEast Finchley Tube Station\, London\nStarting at the Modernist East Finchley station\, this walk travels back in time looking at inter-war architectural styles on the North side of Hampstead Garden Suburb finishing with Arts and Crafts cottages. The guided walks will provide an opportunity to discover where the various civilian internment camps were created out of the Island’s tourist accommodation of hotels and boarding houses along Douglas promenade and around Onchan. Visitors will also be able discover more about what daily life would have been like for those ‘living with the wire’ on the Island – for the internees\, military and Manx living on both sides of the wire. \n \n  \n  \n\nFriday 4 October and Friday 11 October 2019 (tours start at 10:30am and 2pm and last for approximately two hours) \nPre-booking required. SUMMARY:In the Footsteps of Fred Uhlman: Art and Refugees in Hampstead
DESCRIPTION:Hampstead Tube Station\nFred Uhlman was born to a Jewish family in Germany where he practiced as a lawyer. With the rise of the Nazis in 1933\, he moved to France where as he was not allowed to practice law\, he supported himself by privately selling his art work. In 1936\, he met a wealthy English woman\, Diana Croft and later that year moved to England and married her. They settled in Downshire Hill\, Hampstead in 1938. In this walk we discover how together they formed the Artists Refugee Committee to rescue artists trapped in Czechoslovakia\, about how their house became a refuge for artists and about the organisations that they were involved with. We visit sites Uhlman was known to frequent and discuss the role of his artistic friends and neighbours and consider other refugees who settled in Hampstead during this time. \n  \n\n11.00am-1.00pm

DESCRIPTION:Ernö Goldfinger: 2 Willow Road\, NW3\nMeet: Hampstead Underground Station\nLed by Monica Bohm-Duchen for Martin Randall Travel \n10am-c.5.30pm \n  \nAs the abundance of wall plaques in the area demonstrates\, visual artists have been drawn to the physical and cultural attractions of Hampstead since the late eighteenth century. This London day\, however\, concentrates on artistic life in Hampstead in the 1930s\, the period in which it occupied a unique place in the story of British art and architecture. This was in large measure due to the number of talented émigrés from Nazi-dominated Europe who found refuge here\, and the British individuals who welcomed and worked alongside them. \nAt Burgh House & Hampstead Museum\, a private view of selected items from the era and an introductory lecture set the scene. A walk through Frognal before lunch is testament to the pioneering work of modernist architects such as Maxwell Fry and Ernst Freud. In the afternoon\, we walk via Downshire Hill (home to Fred and Diana Uhlman\, Roland Penrose and Margaret Gardiner)\, to the Isokon Building in Lawn Road\, where by special arrangement we visit the former garage\, now a small gallery devoted to the colourful history of these flats\, whose tenants included Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer as well as Agatha Christie and a significant number of Communist spies. After taking a look at the Mall Studios\, home to what Herbert Read memorably described as a ‘gentle nest of artists’\, among them Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson\, and the building which was briefly home to Piet Mondrian\, the day ends with a visit to the modernist house that Hungarian-born Ernö Goldfinger built for himself nearby 2 Willow Road. \nMid-morning refreshments\, lunch and tea provided. \nBook this tour at Martin Randall Travel \n  \nSee also: Hampstead Walk (May 2019) and George Adams – Bauhausler in Britain

DESCRIPTION:Hampstead\, London\nExplore the memories of the Freud family in Hampstead in this walk led by Blue Badge Guide Rachel Kolsky. \nSigmund Freud escaped Nazi occupied Vienna in 1938 to ‘die in freedom’ and his home in Hampstead became a magnet for other European refugees. But he was not the only Freud to leave his mark in NW3. \nThis walking tour profiles Sigmund and his friends\, his daughter Anna whose work with children continues to this day in Maresfield Gardens and his son\, Ernst\, an architect whose modernist houses remain as a testament to his talent.

SUMMARY:In the Footsteps of Fred Uhlman: Art and Refugees in Hampstead
DESCRIPTION:Hampstead Tube Station\nFred Uhlman was born to a Jewish family in Germany where he practiced as a lawyer. With the rise of the Nazis in 1933\, he moved to France where as he was not allowed to practice law\, he supported himself by privately selling his art work. In 1936\, he met a wealthy English woman\, Diana Croft and later that year moved to England and married her. They settled in Downshire Hill\, Hampstead in 1938. In this walk we discover how together they formed the Artists Refugee Committee to rescue artists trapped in Czechoslovakia\, about how their house became a refuge for artists and about the organisations that they were involved with. We visit sites Uhlman was known to frequent and discuss the role of his artistic friends and neighbours and consider other refugees who settled in Hampstead during this time. \n  \n\n3.00pm-5.00pm

We will pass émigré architect Berthold Lubetkin’s iconic High Point flats\, learn about Highgate’s early history\, walk through Waterlow Park and learn of its conception\, pass Highgate Cemetery where Karl Marx is buried and explore Abraham Davis’s Holly Lodge Estate and the émigré architect\, Walter Segal’s 1950s St Anne’s Close. Much of the architecture echoed design trends in Europe and the walk includes passing housing by the émigré architects Ernst Freud and Erno Goldfinger. Elements of eighteenth-century architectural design were also an influence for some architects. \nPassing some more recent examples and of course striking non modernist Hampstead buildings\, this walk will finish at the iconic and idealistic Isokon flats in Belsize Park. SUMMARY:Hampstead in the 1930s – A Walking Tour + Visits
DESCRIPTION:Ernö Goldfinger: 2 Willow Road\, NW3\nMeet: Hampstead Underground Station\nLed by Monica Bohm-Duchen for Martin Randall Travel \n10am-c.5.30pm \n  \nAs the abundance of wall plaques in the area demonstrates\, visual artists have been drawn to the physical and cultural attractions of Hampstead since the late eighteenth century. This London day\, however\, concentrates on artistic life in Hampstead in the 1930s\, the period in which it occupied a unique place in the story of British art and architecture. This was in large measure due to the number of talented émigrés from Nazi-dominated Europe who found refuge here\, and the British individuals who welcomed and worked alongside them. \nAt Burgh House & Hampstead Museum\, a private view of selected items from the era and an introductory lecture set the scene. A walk through Frognal before lunch is testament to the pioneering work of modernist architects such as Maxwell Fry and Ernst Freud. In the afternoon\, we walk via Downshire Hill (home to Fred and Diana Uhlman\, Roland Penrose and Margaret Gardiner)\, to the Isokon Building in Lawn Road\, where by special arrangement we visit the former garage\, now a small gallery devoted to the colourful history of these flats\, whose tenants included Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer as well as Agatha Christie and a significant number of Communist spies. After taking a look at the Mall Studios\, home to what Herbert Read memorably described as a ‘gentle nest of artists’\, among them Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson\, and the building which was briefly home to Piet Mondrian\, the day ends with a visit to the modernist house that Hungarian-born Ernö Goldfinger built for himself nearby 2 Willow Road. \nMid-morning refreshments\, lunch and tea provided. \nBook this tour at Martin Randall Travel \n  \nSee also: Hampstead Walk (September) and George Adams – Bauhausler in Britain
