SUMMARY:The Art of Making Theatre: Pamela Howard in Conversation with Pavel Drábek
DESCRIPTION:Scenographer and musical theatre director Pamela Howard OBE\, creator – among many other memorable productions – of the wonderful Ballad of the Cosmo Café\, will be talking to Pavel Drábek\, Professor of Drama and Theatre Practice at the University of Hull\, about her recently-published ‘graphic memoir’\, The Art of Making Theatre: An Arsenal of Dreams in 12 Scenes. \nIn her new book\, Pamela Howard shows how her life has always been part of the art of making theatre. Part memoir\, part a personal account of artistic creation\, it is a work of art in its own right. Its 12 chapters\, accompanied by original drawings\, offer insights into her creative processes and the journey through life of a celebrated artist\, ranging from her early life and influences\, to her time at art college and the inspiration she gained from travelling the world. \nFollowing the trajectory of her life\, the 12 ‘dreams’ are poised between memory and history and give an account of an artist’s growth\, resilience\, working patterns\, and life-changing encounters with remarkable personalities\, as well as the practical side of working in the theatre\, in visual arts and in education. Her art also tells unexpected stories of little-noticed people and émigré communities. Pamela ‘s dreams have led her to work across the globe and teach and inspire several generations of theatre makers\, scenographers\, designers and visual artists. \n\nTo book\, click here.

SUMMARY:Schools on the Move: Bunce Court\, Gordonstoun and Camphill
DESCRIPTION:As a result of exile from their homelands\, Jewish refugee educators founded many schools in the UK. The schools were mostly boarding schools based on the principle of ‘Landerziehungsheime’ – ‘countryside educational homes’. The primary aim of all these schools in their early days was to support young Jewish refugees as they faced the challenge of establishing a new identity as they came to terms with an unfamiliar and alien environment. This talk by Marjorie Downward will outline briefly the outstanding educational work of Anna Essinger\, founder of Bunce Court School in Kent\, Kurt Hahn and Karl Koenig\, founders of Gordonstoun and Camphill respectively\, both of them in Scotland. \nA retired but still active musician\, Marjorie Downward has for some years taken a keen interest in 19th\, 20th and 21st century social history\, conducting independent research on a wide range of topics\, including the lead-up to war and the after-effects of war on society as a whole. She has been involved in editing stories of WW2 Refugees\, European Voluntary Workers and POWs who came to England and stayed\, resulting in a publication ‘When Europe Came to Shropshire’ by P. Fairclough; and has researched and helped with two publications about the pioneers and WW2 years of Gordonstoun School plus The Jewish X Troop. \nTo book\, click here.

SUMMARY:Rozsa's Wish and The Angel of Chomutov: Two New Works by Marilyn Herman
DESCRIPTION:Second generation composer Marilyn Herman will talk to founding director of Insiders/Outsiders Monica Bohm-Duchen and conductor Kǎrin Hendrickson about two brand new chamber works. One is entitled Rozsa’s Wish\, based on the last words of Marilyn’s grandmother\, Rachel Rozsa\, to her children before she was sent to the gas chamber in Auschwitz – ‘I have lived. Just that you should live.’  In Marilyn’s own words\, ‘my aunt related these words to me – in English (learned entirely from watching films!) in\, I now realise\, the Hebrew form (my aunt survived and lived in Israel after the War). It is in the Hungarian language\, and scored for mezzo\, harp (or piano)\, flute and strings.’ The other work is entitled The Angel of Chomutov\, in the Czech language\, scored for soprano\, French horn\, harp (or piano) and strings.  This pays tribute to the courage and compassion of a young Czech woman who risked and probably gave her life to hand Marilyn’s father a piece of bread\, when aged just fourteen\, he was on a death march from Buchenwald. \nThe event will include a screening of a video-recorded recital of these painfully beautiful works and involve other members of the composer’s family. \nTo book\, click here. \n  \nMarilyn Herman – Composer \nKarin Hendrickson – Conductor \nDenise Alonzo – Soprano \nSarah Castle – Mezzo soprano \nFabian van de Geest – French Horn \nAlyson Frazier – Flute \nAnne Denholm – Harp \nPhilippa Mo – 1st Violin \nVictoria Gill – 2nd Violin \nDaniel Sanxis – Viola \nTom Wraith – Cello \nToby Hughes – Double Bass \nEdita Brychta – Spoken Voice \n  \n  \nFor further information about Marilyn\, click here + Spotlight on: Marilyn Herman – Sound and Music \nand about Kǎrin\, click here. \n  \nTo find out more about the Jewish Museum and to donate\, click here.

SUMMARY:The Maverick: George Weidenfeld and the Golden Age of Publishing
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Harding in conversation with David Herman about The Maverick\, his new biography of iconic and sometimes controversial Austrian-born publisher George Weidenfeld. \nAfter arriving in London just before the Second World War as a penniless and friendless Austrian-Jewish refugee\, George Weidenfeld went on to transform not only the world of publishing but the culture of ideas. The books that he published include momentous titles such as Lolita\, Double Helix\, The Group and The Hedgehog and the Fox\, with authors he championed ranging from Joan Didion\, Mary McCarthy\, Golda Meir and Edna O’Brien to Henry Miller\, Harold Wilson\, Saul Bellow and Henry Kissinger. \nIn this first\, newly-published biography\, acclaimed author Thomas Harding provides a full\, unvarnished and at times difficult history of this complex and fascinating character. Drawing on author correspondence\, internal memos\, and other documents buried deep in the secret publishing files of Weidenfeld & Nicolson\, Harding crafts a portrait of the publisher’s life that is inextricable from the efforts and intricacies of putting a book into the world. \nTo book\, click here\nThose who sign up to attend this online event will be eligible for a discount of £5 off the RRP of the book.

SUMMARY:The Photographs of Zygmunt Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Cultural historian Janet Wolff will introduce a less well-known aspect of the career of eminent sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. \nPolish-born Zygmunt Bauman\, who settled in the UK in 1971\, is known internationally as the sociologist of postmodernity and ‘liquid’ society. But he was also a serious photographer. The Photographs of Zygmunt Bauman\, a new publication edited by Janet Wolff and Peter Beilharz\, presents a selection of his black-and-white photographs\, together with a range of essays by colleagues\, friends and family about his work with images. The book features a mixture of short pieces on individual photographs and longer essays addressing aspects of Bauman’s photography and the life and work of his wife\, Janina. The book concludes with an essay by Karl Dudman\, one of the Baumans’ grandchildren\, based on a series of photographs he took in the family home shortly after his grandfather’s death in 2017. \nJanet Wolff is Emeritus Professor in English and American Studies at the University of Manchester. Artist Lydia Bauman\, Zygmunt’s daughter\, who is one of the contributors to the book\, will also be present. \nAll those signed up for this event will be eligible for 30% off the cover price. \n  \nTo book\, click here

SUMMARY:Creative Sanctuary: Refugees at Dartington in the 1930s and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:An online symposium on 20-21 October exploring the little-known fact that Dartington Hall in Devon was an important place of sanctuary for refugees from Fascist Europe. \nDartington Hall\, established by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst in the late 1920s as a utopian agricultural and educational experiment\, became a much-needed place of refuge for a significant number of eminent creative individuals\, who because of their Jewish background and/or anti-fascist stance\, were forced to leave Germany (and later\, Austria) after 1933. Spanish Republicans fleeing the Spanish Civil War were also welcomed. \nComprising a lively mixture of illustrated talks straddling multiple art forms (fine and applied arts\, architecture\, dance and music)\, discussions\, Q&A sessions and film screenings\, the programme will be aimed at both a general and a specialist audience\, local\, national and international. \nThe symposium\, which draws on the very latest archival researches by established and early career scholars alike\, will fill a significant gap in twentieth century British cultural and social history. \nTo view the full programme and to book tickets\, click here\n*NB Free access to the symposium will be granted to all those living in the TQ postcodes \nThe symposium is kindly supported by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art\, Shoresh Charitable Trust\, the Elmgrant Trust and Counterpoints Arts. \nImage: Hans Keller teaching at Summer School of Music\, Dartington Hall
