DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 13 November at 2pm and 7.30pm at JW3 (but also watchable online)\, there will be a one-woman performance inspired by Sophie Herxheimer’s 2017 poetry collection Velkom to Inklandt: Poems in my Grandmother’s Inklisch. Director Lucy Richardson\, actor and writer Sarah Malin and musician Nico Brown have created a hilarious and deeply poignant new show based on the book and featuring most of its poems. SUMMARY:Ian McLaren: Stories of a Graphic Designer
DESCRIPTION:Penguin Books\, the Munich Olympic Games and Refugee Connections: Ian McLaren in conversation with Anna Nyburg about his life and work \nOn Wednesday 16 November at 6pm\, graphic designer Professor Ian McLaren will talk to design historian Dr.Anna Nyburg about his illustrious career at Penguin Books and beyond. \nIan McLaren has had a rich and varied career starting during the pre-digital days of graphic design. He took the unusual step of studying at the Ulm School in Germany\, based on Bauhaus principles\, despite knowing no German. Celebrated for his work at the 1972 Olympic Games\, he also worked widely in the field of book design\, for Penguin Books and beyond\, where he came into contact with celebrated designers such as Italian-born Mauthausen survivor Germano Facetti and Polish-born Holocaust survivor Romek Marber. He will also talk about his professional and personal encounters with émigré artists and designers\, Francis Carr\, FHK Henrion and Willy de Mayo. \nProfessor Ian McLaren attended the influential Ulm School of Design and in the 1960s designed material for CND\, The National Theatre and The Arts Council. He also designed many book covers for Penguin and Puffin before joining the Munich team in 1970. After Munich he moved to Paris\, where his practice designed visual identities for UNESCO\, Lyon Metro and the Centre Culturelle Georges Pompidou. He later went on to teach at various universities including the Glasgow School of Art and De Montfort Universities. \nDr. Anna Nyburg is an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London\, where she taught languages for some 30 years. She is a committee member of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies and a trustee of the Insiders/Outsiders Arts Foundation.. She is the author of a biography of the émigré artist Hellmuth Weissenborn\, a book on the émigré contribution to British art publishing and another on the refugees’ contribution to British fashion. Two of her essays appeared in Insiders/outsiders: Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Visual Culture. DESCRIPTION:In the late 1930s the Hampstead Art scene rallied support to rescue artists trapped in Czechoslovakia under Nazi rule. Led by the refugee lawyer/artist Fred Ulman and his aristocratic English wife Diana Croft from their Downshire Hill house\, they formed the artist refugee committee. We learn about how their house became a refuge for artists and about the organizations that they were involved with. SUMMARY:Virtual Tour - Diverse London - City Public Art by Refugees and Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:The City of London has always been home to immigrant communities. This walks winds its way through the City streets and highlights immigrants who made a mark here in a literal way as it is home to some of their sculptures and reliefs. We will discover the first official public sculpture\, the Monument which was carved by Caius Gabriel Cibber a Danish immigrant; a drinking fountain by French refugee\, Aimé-Jules Dalou; mosaics by Russian born Boris Anrep and perhaps the most significant contribution of sculptures are by a number of refugees from Nazi Europe who settled in the UK such as Naomi Blake\, Frank Meisler\, Oscar Nemon and Georg Ehrlich. The tour finishes with the most recent sculpture\, Unity\, 1992 by a Croatian refugee from former Yugoslavia\, Ivan Klapez. \nThis is a live virtual tour hosted via Zoom video conferencing where your guide will give an illustrated presentation of the tour route with an accompanying talk. DESCRIPTION:Scenographer and musical theatre director Pamela Howard OBE\, creator – among many other memorable productions – of the wonderful Ballad of the Cosmo Café\, will be talking to Pavel Drábek\, Professor of Drama and Theatre Practice at the University of Hull\, about her recently-published ‘graphic memoir’\, The Art of Making Theatre: An Arsenal of Dreams in 12 Scenes.  \nIn her new book\, Pamela Howard shows how her life has always been part of the art of making theatre. Part memoir\, part a personal account of artistic creation\, it is a work of art in its own right. Its 12 chapters\, accompanied by original drawings\, offer insights into her creative processes and the journey through life of a celebrated artist\, ranging from her early life and influences\, to her time at art college and the inspiration she gained from travelling the world. \nFollowing the trajectory of her life\, the 12 ‘dreams’ are poised between memory and history and give an account of an artist’s growth\, resilience\, working patterns\, and life-changing encounters with remarkable personalities\, as well as the practical side of working in the theatre\, in visual arts and in education. Her art also tells unexpected stories of little-noticed people and émigré communities. SUMMARY:Schools on the Move: Bunce Court\, Gordonstoun and Camphill
DESCRIPTION:As a result of exile from their homelands\, Jewish refugee educators founded many schools in the UK. The schools were mostly boarding schools based on the principle of ‘Landerziehungsheime’ – ‘countryside educational homes’. The primary aim of all these schools in their early days was to support young Jewish refugees as they faced the challenge of establishing a new identity as they came to terms with an unfamiliar and alien environment. This talk by Marjorie Downward will outline briefly the outstanding educational work of Anna Essinger\, founder of Bunce Court School in Kent\, Kurt Hahn and Karl Koenig\, founders of Gordonstoun and Camphill respectively\, both of them in Scotland. \nA retired but still active musician\, Marjorie Downward has for some years taken a keen interest in 19th\, 20th and 21st century social history\, conducting independent research on a wide range of topics\, including the lead-up to war and the after-effects of war on society as a whole. She has been involved in editing stories of WW2 Refugees\, European Voluntary Workers and POWs who came to England and stayed\, resulting in a publication ‘When Europe Came to Shropshire’ by P. Fairclough; and has researched and helped with two publications about the pioneers and WW2 years of Gordonstoun School plus The Jewish X Troop.  \nTo book\, click here.

SUMMARY:Rozsa's Wish and The Angel of Chomutov: Two New Works by Marilyn Herman
DESCRIPTION:Second generation composer Marilyn Herman will talk to founding director of Insiders/Outsiders Monica Bohm-Duchen and conductor Kǎrin Hendrickson about two brand new chamber works. SUMMARY:Bernat Klein: Colour Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Lisa Mason will introduce designer and colour consultant Bernat Klein (1922-2014) and the extensive archive of his work held by National Museums Scotland. Klein was displaced from his country of birth by the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia and went on to produce innovative fashion fabrics for the couture houses of Europe and to work on important interior design commissions. Klein will be situated within the context of a wider cohort of émigré designers practicing in post-war Britain.  \nLisa Mason is Assistant Curator of Modern & Contemporary Design at National Museums Scotland\, Chair of the Dress and Textile Specialists\, and a Trustee of the Bernat Klein Foundation. Her research interests include textile design in post-war Britain\, modern tapestry\, and design archives. She is the curator of Bernat Klein: Design in Colour\, currently on show at the National Museum of Scotland\, Edinburgh until 23 April.  \nThis event will be chaired by design historian Dr.Anna Nyburg\, author of a book on the émigré contribution to British art publishing and another on the refugees’ contribution to British fashion. Two of her essays appeared in Insiders/Outsiders: Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Visual Culture.
