SUMMARY:Creative Sanctuary: Refugees at Dartington in the 1930s and Beyond (Day Two)
DESCRIPTION:An online symposium on 20-21 October exploring the little-known fact that Dartington Hall in Devon was an important place of sanctuary for refugees from Fascist Europe. \nDartington Hall\, established by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst in the late 1920s as a utopian agricultural and educational experiment\, became a much-needed place of refuge for a significant number of eminent creative individuals\, who because of their Jewish background and/or anti-fascist stance\, were forced to leave Germany (and later\, Austria) after 1933. Spanish Republicans fleeing the Spanish Civil War were also welcomed. \nComprising a lively mixture of illustrated talks straddling multiple art forms (fine and applied arts\, architecture\, dance and music)\, discussions\, Q&A sessions and film screenings\, the programme will be aimed at both a general and a specialist audience\, local\, national and international. \nThe symposium\, which draws on the very latest archival researches by established and early career scholars alike\, will fill a significant gap in twentieth century British cultural and social history. \nTo view the full programme and to book tickets\, click here\n*NB Free access to the symposium will be granted to all those living in the TQ postcodes \nThe symposium is kindly supported by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art\, Shoresh Charitable Trust\, the Elmgrant Trust and Counterpoints Arts. \nImage: Hans Keller teaching at Summer School of Music\, Dartington Hall

SUMMARY:Innocence and Experience: Childhood and the 1930s Refugees
DESCRIPTION:Image: from Wolf Suschitzky and Liselotte Frankl\, That Baby. The Story of Peter and his new Brother. Adprint\, 1946 © Estate of Wolf Suschitzky.\nInsiders/Outsiders\, in partnership with the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies\, University of London\, is hosting a free online conference called ‘Innocence and Experience: Childhood and the 1930s Refugees’. \nChild psychology and therapy were disciplines developed in pre-war Germany and Austria\, and Britain benefitted hugely from the refugees’ expertise in the area. Many of the children who came to the UK as refugees or Holocaust survivors were themselves of course in need of support. This online conference brings together expertise in the field from the UK\, Europe and Israel\, and presentations deal with diverse aspects of childhood amongst the refugees from Nazism\, including education\, therapy\, literature\, art\, photography\, and play. \nFor full details and to book\, click here.

SUMMARY:A Jewish Jesus: Art and Faith in the Shadow of World War II
DESCRIPTION:Hans Feibusch\, Crucifixion\, 1951 (detail)\, St.John’s Church\, Waterloo\nConference (face-to-face\, with online option) \n\nA groundbreaking one-day conference called ‘A Jewish Jesus: Art and Faith in the Shadow of World War II’. \nThis is being organised by St. John’s Waterloo\, home to two major paintings by émigré artist Hans Feibusch\, in association with Insiders/Outsiders and Art+Christianity. \nHow did a German-Jewish refugee artist come to be responsible for more murals in Church of England churches than any other artist in its entire history? Who were the other Jewish artists employed by the Church or using Christian iconography in the post-war period? And what has become of their work today? Do these artists deserve greater recognition and what can be done to save their works\, many of which are under threat? \nUsing Feibusch as a starting point\, the conference will address the broader theme of Jewish artists who produced work for the Church and/or employed Christian iconography during the 1930s-1950s\, a period dominated by the rise of Fascism\, World War Two and the Holocaust\, in which the figure of Jesus was often seen (by Jews and non-Jews alike) as the embodiment of contemporary Jewish suffering. \nTo book\, click here.\n \n\nConference participants may like to purchase Insiders/Outsiders: Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Visual Culture\, edited by Monica Bohm-Duchen\, at a discount of 20% until 31st July. \nLund Humphries\nCode: INOUT20 \n

SUMMARY:Cambridge: City of Scholars\, City of Refuge\, 1933-1945
DESCRIPTION:The New University Library seen from Memorial Court\, Clare (1934) Cambridge University Library (Cam.bb.934.7). Image via CC BY-NC 3.0\nWinstanley Lecture Theatre\, Trinity College\, Cambridge\nThis conference is the first attempt to begin to reconstruct the ways in which Cambridge – university\, colleges\, and town – became a sanctuary for persecuted European academics\, 1933-45. Papers will range widely across the arts\, humanities\, social and natural sciences\, both focusing on well-known refugee academics and drawing attention to the experience of those marginalised or neglected: students\, women\, and scholars who never found their way professionally. We will also look at the individuals\, institutions and households that enabled escape and rescue\, as well as at the evacuation to Cambridge of material resources of scholarly value. \nThe conference will take place from 09.00 to 18.00 on Thursday 5th March and from 09.00 to 13.000 on Friday 6th March.

DESCRIPTION:Paul and Marjorie Abbatt Play Tray\, designed by Freda Skinner\, c. 1935\nUniversity of Westminster School of Architecture\, London\nA Twentieth Century Society Symposium \nAs the Bauhaus Centenary year comes to its close\, what is left to say? The Bye Bye Bauhaus day symposium\, offers new perspectives and stories that have not yet been told\, concerning design in Germany and Britain during the past century. \nThe programme opens with Richard Hollis on the Belgian Art Nouveau designer Henry van de Velde\, the subject of his new book and Professor Gerald Adler\, the English expert on Heinrich Tessenow. The morning concludes with three speakers on subjects relating to design\, with Tanya Harrod on the Bauhaus enthusiasms of the English handweaver\, Ethel Mairet\, Sophie Jump\, theatre designer and scenographer\, on the little-known collaboration between Marcel Breuer and the costume design group\, Motley\, in 1930s London\, followed by Dr Anna Nyburg\, on ‘Exiles and Textiles’\, the little-known story of official British support for manufacturers fleeing Nazi Germany. \nThe afternoon programme includes Valeria Carullo\, Curator\, The Robert Elwall Photographs Collection\, RIBA British Architectural Library\, speaking on the RIBA Refugee Committee. She is followed by Dr David Haney\, author of When Modern was Green\, 2010\, who considers the afterlife of the Trade Union School at Bernau by the second Bauhaus director\, Hannes Meyer\, and Professor Frederic Schwartz of UCL who asks ‘What was the Bauhaus?’ – a question that becomes more difficult to answer the more we hear about it. \nThe final session introduces five lesser-known Bauhäusler in Britain: Jilly Allenby on her grandfather\, the sculptor Johannes Ilmari Auerbach; Marcus Williamson on René Halkett\, painter\, designer broadcaster and lyricist for the punk band Bauhaus; John Allan on the graphic designer George Adams (Teltscher)\, Rachel Dickson on puppeteer Werner ‘Jacky’ Jackson and Danyel Gilgan on his grandfather\, the maker and teacher Wilfred Franks. \n  \n\nTwentieth Century Society Members: £40; Non-members: £50; Students with valid ID: £25 \nTickets include refreshments with sandwich lunch and post-conference drinks. \nBooking \n9.30am – 7.00pm

SUMMARY:Innovation & Acculturation: The Émigré Art Historians and Britain
DESCRIPTION:Queen Mary\, University of London\nGraduate Centre GC601 \nThe conference aims to reappraise and – where appropriate – to challenge the received narrative about the history of art history in Britain. It will seek to re-evaluate just how ‘German’ British art history became between 1920 and 1970\, and to explore the interactions with neighboring disciplines\, such as Medieval History and Classics. Our aim is to examine the interaction between the practices ‘exported’ by the German émigrés and the British traditions of art historiography. Revisiting the shaping of art-historical discourse goes hand in hand with a reconsideration of the way émigrés scholars in Britain reacted to their new surroundings. \nStart: Tuesday\, 5 November 14.00\nEnd: Wednesday\, 6 November 17.00 \nThe conference is free. All welcome! Please register here to assist administration. \n  \nProgramme \nTuesday\, 5th November\n14.00 Welcome and Introduction \n14.15 Art History in Britain\n \nSam Rose (St Andrews) – Roger Fry as Art Historian \nEmilie Oléron Evans (QMUL\, Modern Languages and Cultures) – \nNikolaus Pevsner’s ‘Reflections on not teaching Art History’ \n14.45 Coffee Break \n15.15 Competing Methodologies Beyond Academia \nAnne Uhrlandt (Munich) – Selling German and Dutch art abroad: The émigré Art Historian and Art Dealer Max Stern in London \nMorwenna Blewett (Oxford) – Reception\, Recognition and Rancour: The Barbed Hand of Rescue and the Impact of Refugee Restorers 1933-1948 \n16.45 Break \n17.00 Burcu Dogramaci (Munich) – Immortal Portraits – Émigrés in Britain and the Historiography of early Photography \n17.30 Discussion and wine reception \nWednesday\, 6th November\n10.00 Women’s Career Paths \nVivian Zech (Vienna) – The Viennese School of Art History as a Lifeline: Dr. Betty Kurth’s Impact on a Science in Migration \nYonna Yapou – Edith Hoffmann: Not quite Czech\, German\, or British – but anchored by Britain \n11.30 Coffee Break \n12.00 Exchanges in Writing and in Practice\n \nAstrid Swenson (Bath) – To Relinquish\, Rebuild or Ignore: Thinking about Breaks and Continuities in Anglo-German Art Historical Exchanges through Writings on Cologne Cathedral\, 1914-1946 \nJohannes von Muller (Warburg Institute) – ‘Under the most difficult Circumstances’. SUMMARY:Refugee Art Dealers in Britain: Lectures and Round Table
DESCRIPTION:Andras Kalman with Graham Sutherland’s Standing Figure 1954 © Crane Kalman Gallery\, London\nSotheby’s Institute\, London\nFollowing a very successful event co-orgainzed by TIAMSA and the Courtauld Alumni Association in 2018\, this afternoon symposium organised by TIAMSA and Sotheby’s Institute of Art London will explore the experiences\, impact and significance of those art dealers who fled Nazi Europe and set up in the UK before or during the Second World War. While the 2018 event focused on dealers active in the old master trade\, this symposium will look at those who worked with 20th century art. Their experience of dislocation changed the art world as well as the status of particular artists and artistic movements\, opening up channels for the dissemination of the new trends of the 1920s and 1930s. This event will combine short papers by experts in the field and a panel discussion which will contextualize the experiences and achievements of those who lived through these dramatic times. Click here for registration through Sotheby’s Institute (required). \n  \n\nSpeakers include Richard Aronowitz\, Cherith Summers\, Fran Lloyd\, Sue Grayson Ford\, Jutta Vinzent and Lucy Wasensteiner. \n2.30pm – 7.15pm

He paid us back handsomely\, with a flowering of his talent there which produced some of the most stunning fabrics of the century and a great textile business\, the legacy of which we now celebrate. Anglo-Czech creativity at its best. We are proud to support this magnificent exhibition\, and the contemporary work of students of Pavel Ivancic’s design studio reinterpreting Ascher fabrics. This year the British Embassy is celebrating 100 years since its opening in Prague’s Thun Palace. The Embassy has supported the exhibition as part of its #STOLET campaign of cultural activities\,” says Nick Archer\, the British ambassador to the Czech Republic. \nFor registration and more information\, please click here

SUMMARY:Four Parts of a Folding Screen
DESCRIPTION:Birkbeck Cinema\, London\nHaunted by History: Session Two \nA selection of recent essay films – poignant\, thought-provoking\, sometimes darkly humorous and frequently disturbing – made by UK-based members of the so-called ‘Second Generation’\, namely\, the children of refugees from Nazi Europe and/or Holocaust survivors\, whose work explores the complex and necessarily problematic legacy of their families’ experiences. \nThis session we are excited to screen Four Parts of a Folding Screen (83 mins\, 2018) directed by Anthea Kennedy and Ian Wiblin. \nBased on documents found in Berlin archives\, Four Parts of a Folding Screen explores exclusion\, statelessness and the legalised theft and sale of everyday family possessions by the National Socialist regime. A voice\, enigmatic and sometimes uncertain\, foretells of\, relates and recalls the routine processes of injustice and their legacy: the creation of a diaspora of household objects\, scattered amongst buildings that no longer exist. As the camera probes the secrets of ordinary spaces\, streets and buildings around the city of Berlin\, semblances of a person and a history begin to emerge and coalesce. \nFollowing the screening Anthea and Ian will take part in a Q+A. \nThis event is organised in association with the Insiders/Outsiders Festival and the Essay Film Festival. \n  \n\n18:00 – 21:00 \n  \nSee also: Session One Haunted by History \n
