DESCRIPTION:Paul and Marjorie Abbatt Play Tray\, designed by Freda Skinner\, c. 1935\nUniversity of Westminster School of Architecture\, London\nA Twentieth Century Society Symposium \nAs the Bauhaus Centenary year comes to its close\, what is left to say? The Bye Bye Bauhaus day symposium\, offers new perspectives and stories that have not yet been told\, concerning design in Germany and Britain during the past century. \nThe programme opens with Richard Hollis on the Belgian Art Nouveau designer Henry van de Velde\, the subject of his new book and Professor Gerald Adler\, the English expert on Heinrich Tessenow. The morning concludes with three speakers on subjects relating to design\, with Tanya Harrod on the Bauhaus enthusiasms of the English handweaver\, Ethel Mairet\, Sophie Jump\, theatre designer and scenographer\, on the little-known collaboration between Marcel Breuer and the costume design group\, Motley\, in 1930s London\, followed by Dr Anna Nyburg\, on ‘Exiles and Textiles’\, the little-known story of official British support for manufacturers fleeing Nazi Germany. \nThe afternoon programme includes Valeria Carullo\, Curator\, The Robert Elwall Photographs Collection\, RIBA British Architectural Library\, speaking on the RIBA Refugee Committee. She is followed by Dr David Haney\, author of When Modern was Green\, 2010\, who considers the afterlife of the Trade Union School at Bernau by the second Bauhaus director\, Hannes Meyer\, and Professor Frederic Schwartz of UCL who asks ‘What was the Bauhaus?’ – a question that becomes more difficult to answer the more we hear about it. \nThe final session introduces five lesser-known Bauhäusler in Britain: Jilly Allenby on her grandfather\, the sculptor Johannes Ilmari Auerbach; Marcus Williamson on René Halkett\, painter\, designer broadcaster and lyricist for the punk band Bauhaus; John Allan on the graphic designer George Adams (Teltscher)\, Rachel Dickson on puppeteer Werner ‘Jacky’ Jackson and Danyel Gilgan on his grandfather\, the maker and teacher Wilfred Franks. \n  \n\nTwentieth Century Society Members: £40; Non-members: £50; Students with valid ID: £25 \nTickets include refreshments with sandwich lunch and post-conference drinks. \nBooking \n9.30am – 7.00pm

SUMMARY:Refugee Art Dealers in Britain: Lectures and Round Table
DESCRIPTION:Andras Kalman with Graham Sutherland’s Standing Figure 1954 © Crane Kalman Gallery\, London\nSotheby’s Institute\, London\nFollowing a very successful event co-orgainzed by TIAMSA and the Courtauld Alumni Association in 2018\, this afternoon symposium organised by TIAMSA and Sotheby’s Institute of Art London will explore the experiences\, impact and significance of those art dealers who fled Nazi Europe and set up in the UK before or during the Second World War. While the 2018 event focused on dealers active in the old master trade\, this symposium will look at those who worked with 20th century art. Their experience of dislocation changed the art world as well as the status of particular artists and artistic movements\, opening up channels for the dissemination of the new trends of the 1920s and 1930s. This event will combine short papers by experts in the field and a panel discussion which will contextualize the experiences and achievements of those who lived through these dramatic times. DESCRIPTION:u(p)m: The Museum of Decorative Arts\, Prague\nIn response to the positive reception the exhibition The Mad Silkman. Zika & Lida Ascher: Textiles and Fashion has enjoyed in the Czech Republic and abroad\, among scholars and the general public alike\, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague has decided to host an international conference. Experts from the United Kingdom\, France\, the United States\, the Czech Republic and other countries have accepted invitations. Talks will be divided into sections covering history\, art\, textiles\, fashion and current student projects. The conference will also look at migration and how it can contribute to society. \n\nZika and Lida Ascher left Prague in early 1939 for the UK. There Zika Ascher launched a silk business that was soon thriving – and began approaching top artists\, including Matisse and Henry Moore\, to produce designs for a special collection of scarves\, the Ascher Squares. Many of them\, and other exquisite pieces produced by the company\, are on show as part of an extensive exhibition in Prague. Nick Archer\, British Ambassador to the Czech Republic\, and Eva Zažímalová\, President of the Czech Academy of Sciences\, with the participation of Peter Ascher. \n“On hearing Zika Ascher’s life story\, I knew at once that the British Embassy had to be part of the celebration of his achievements at u(p)m in this\, our centenary year. Britain gave him a second chance when he was forced to leave his mother country. He paid us back handsomely\, with a flowering of his talent there which produced some of the most stunning fabrics of the century and a great textile business\, the legacy of which we now celebrate. Anglo-Czech creativity at its best. We are proud to support this magnificent exhibition\, and the contemporary work of students of Pavel Ivancic’s design studio reinterpreting Ascher fabrics. This year the British Embassy is celebrating 100 years since its opening in Prague’s Thun Palace. SUMMARY:Four Parts of a Folding Screen
DESCRIPTION:Birkbeck Cinema\, London\nHaunted by History: Session Two \nA selection of recent essay films – poignant\, thought-provoking\, sometimes darkly humorous and frequently disturbing – made by UK-based members of the so-called ‘Second Generation’\, namely\, the children of refugees from Nazi Europe and/or Holocaust survivors\, whose work explores the complex and necessarily problematic legacy of their families’ experiences. \nThis session we are excited to screen Four Parts of a Folding Screen (83 mins\, 2018) directed by Anthea Kennedy and Ian Wiblin. \nBased on documents found in Berlin archives\, Four Parts of a Folding Screen explores exclusion\, statelessness and the legalised theft and sale of everyday family possessions by the National Socialist regime. A voice\, enigmatic and sometimes uncertain\, foretells of\, relates and recalls the routine processes of injustice and their legacy: the creation of a diaspora of household objects\, scattered amongst buildings that no longer exist. As the camera probes the secrets of ordinary spaces\, streets and buildings around the city of Berlin\, semblances of a person and a history begin to emerge and coalesce. \nFollowing the screening Anthea and Ian will take part in a Q+A. \nThis event is organised in association with the Insiders/Outsiders Festival and the Essay Film Festival. \n  \n\n18:00 – 21:00 \n  \nSee also: Session One Haunted by History \n
