DESCRIPTION:Hope Leaving Schloss Schönhagen (detail)\, 1934\nOnline Event\nOn Monday 15 March at 6pm\, Charlotte Grant will talk about her grandfather Martin Bloch (1883-1954)\, a German-Jewish artist who came to Britain (via Denmark) as a refugee in 1934. Influential as a colourist and teacher\, his paintings\, which comprise dynamic still lifes\, landscapes\, and cityscapes\, often with figures\, are found in public and private collections in Britain\, America\, Europe and Israel. SUMMARY:The Inscriptions of Ralph Beyer
DESCRIPTION:Online Talk\nLettering designer and carver John Neilson will be in conversation with design historian Tanya Harrod about his new book The Inscriptions of Ralph Beyer\, published on 11 January by Lund Humphries. Ceramic artist and writer Edmund de Waal\, who wrote the foreword\, will contribute some introductory thoughts. \nRalph Beyer (1921-2008)\, exiled at the age of sixteen from Nazi Germany\, made his home and career in Britain. He was a carver of stone inscriptions\, best known for his huge ‘Tablets of the Word’ in Basil Spence’s Coventry Cathedral. These broke the mould of classical formality associated with British lettercarving after Eric Gill — their irregularity and roughness offending conventional notions of ‘correctness’. In fact\, Beyer had spent a few formative months in Gill’s workshop\, but his own unique voice owed as much to his childhood in Weimar Germany and his father’s wide interests\, which ranged from Modernist architecture to ‘primitive’ art. In Britain\, Beyer came to know Henry Moore and Nikolaus Pevsner\, and was influenced by the artist and poet David Jones. He thus straddles both German and British traditions in lettering as well as the wider art world. \nThis is event is held in partnership with Lund Humphries. \nTo book\, click here. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:'Sanctuary in the City' Public Art by Refugees & Immigrants Tour
DESCRIPTION:Online Tour\n\n\nInformation on Walk: The City of London has always been home to immigrant communities. This walks winds its way through the City streets and highlights immigrants who made a mark here in a literal way as it is home to some of their sculptures and reliefs. We will discover the first official public sculpture\, the Monument which was carved by Caius Gabriel Cibber a Danish immigrant; a drinking fountain by French refugee\, Aimé-Jules Dalou; mosaics by Russian born Boris Anrep and perhaps the most significant contribution of sculptures are by a number of refugees from Nazi Europe who settled in the UK such as Naomi Blake\, Frank Meisler\, Oscar Nemon and Georg Ehrlich. The tour finishes with the most recent sculpture\, Unity\, 1992 by a Croatian refugee from former Yugoslavia\, Ivan Klapez. \nThe Guide: Marilyn Greene is a guide\, museum curator and educator. She was curator of Hampstead Museum\, Burgh House from 1998-2006 and worked in the learning department of the Victoria and Albert Museum from 2000-2013 and more recently at London Transport Museum. She has been guiding locally for many years on history\, art and architectural themes and qualified as a City guide in 2015. She particularly enjoys talking about the architecture\, art and landscaping of the City. SUMMARY:Aleksander Żyw: Before and After\, Works from 1934-1951
DESCRIPTION:In Depth\, (detail)\,1948-9\, oil on canvas\, 61 x 50.8 cm\nA talk by the artist’s grandson Tommy Żyw\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Event \nAleksander Żyw was born into a Jewish family in Lida\, Poland in 1905 and trained at Warsaw School of Fine Arts in the early 1930s. He was living and working in Paris when the War broke out and he fought with the Polish Army in France before escaping to the UK where the Polish Army was reforming. He arrived in Scotland in 1940 and was appointed as an official war artist. He would later discover that almost all his family had been murdered in the Holocaust. He made Edinburgh his home until he moved permanently to Italy in the 1970s. \nŻyw continued to exhibit across Europe\, with shows in Paris\, Basel and a retrospective exhibition held by the Polish National Union of Artists in 1967. In the UK\, he enjoyed a Festival exhibition at The Scottish Gallery in 1950 and 1957\, and major exhibitions with The Scottish Arts Council in 1972\, the Talbot Rice in 1975 and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 1986. His last significant exhibitions were in Parma in 1988\, and Desenzano in 1991. \nThis focused presentation by the artist’s grandson Tommy Żyw\, Director of The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh\, will offer a snapshot of a pivotal moment in Żyw’s artistic career. The group of work to be discussed\, which date from the years 1934 – 1951\, provide insights into a European painter who emerged from the devastation and suffering of war a radically altered artist\, and with a body of work strengthened by the experiences he had lived through. \nThe event will be chaired by David Herman\, son of Josef Herman\, another Polish-born Jewish artist with strong Scottish connections. \nTo book\, click here. \nIn partnership with The Association of Jewish Refugees

SUMMARY:No Night So Dark: the Story of the Wels Family
DESCRIPTION:Ida\, Martin\, Tomáš & Rudolf on holiday in Binz\, early 1930s\nOne family’s story of memory stolen and regained\nOnline Talk \nTo coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day 2021\, No Night So Dark will tell the remarkable story of the Czech-Jewish Wels family\, from the late nineteenth century through World War Two to the present day. When Oxford-based Colin Wels first opened a box that his father Tomáš had kept for decades in the back of a cupboard\, he had little idea what it contained.  His father – the only family member to survive the Holocaust – had never spoken about his life before he came to Britain as a 19-year-old in 1939. Through the contents of the box\, made up of hundreds of letters and documents\, photographs\, sketches and drawings\, the immense creative energy of several generations of the family was brought to life. \nThis event will include a discussion chaired by Prague-based journalist David Vaughan with Tomáš’s son Colin Wels and translator Gerry Turner\, who played a key role in helping Colin to find a way back to his family’s past\, and marks the recent publication of “Sancta Familia”\, a humorous – but with hindsight\, hugely poignant – evocation of family life\, written in late 1938 by Tomáš and illustrated by his 13-year-old brother Martin. \nThe boys’ father\, Rudolf Wels\, was an accomplished architect in interwar Czechoslovakia\, who studied in Vienna and worked closely with Adolf Loos. Loos was also the architect of the Winternitz Villa in Prague\, which recently housed the exhibition “No Night So Dark”\, devoted to the Wels family’s story. DESCRIPTION:The lost journal of art therapist Marie Paneth\nOnline Talk \nTrevor Avery\, director of The Lake District Holocaust Project will give a talk about the first book to be published under the Second Generation imprint\, Rock the Cradle by Austrian-born art therapist Marie Paneth. \nRock the Cradle is a rare eye witness account – written in 1947\, but only recently re-discovered – of what life was like both at the Calgarth Estate near Windermere\, home to some three hundred Holocaust survivor children\, and for a small group of young women Holocaust survivors who lived in a hostel in London after the war. DESCRIPTION:The ‘Music\, Migration and Mobility’ team at Glyndebourne\, 2020\nOn Thursday 3 December\, between 10am and 4pm\, there will an online symposium entitled Music\, Migration and Mobility – The Legacy of Migrant Musicians from Nazi Europe in Britain\, hosted by the Austrian Cultural Forum London. The practice-led\, international and multidisciplinary research project ‘Music\, Migration and Mobility’ at the Royal College of Music aims to gain new knowledge about the legacy of musicians who emigrated to Britain from Germany and Austria in the 1930s. In this opening symposium\, the research team will outline its approach of studying and foregrounding the mobility of these musicians and their importance for British culture during and after WW2. Presentations from all team members and two distinguished guest speakers will be complemented by a performance by Ensemble Émigré and students from the Royal College of Music. The event will take place on Zoom\, with most speakers and musicians in the room at the Austrian Cultural Forum. DESCRIPTION:Portrait of Wilhelm Hollitscher\, Hugo Dachinger\, 1940\nVirtual Book Launch\nThe Wiener Holocaust Library will host this special event in conjunction with the Ben Uri Research Unit \nTo register for the event\, please click here. \nThis year\, the 80th anniversary of the internment of ‘enemy aliens’ in Britain during the Second World War\, provides a key moment to reflect on the internment strategy. This book helps us to understand Churchill’s shameful policy to ‘collar the lot’ and is as relevant to today’s injustices as it is an account of the cruelty of the past. It brings alive the experience of internment by combining the creative responses of two friends: Wilhelm Hollitscher’s diary provides a vivid and fascinating account of daily life in the camp along with wider political comment\, while Hugo Dachinger staged exhibitions of his work in camp\, entitled Art Behind the Wire\, and painted several portraits of Hollitscher. Both men found being interned as an ‘enemy alien’ traumatic\, but were able to draw moral strength from the experience. \nThe Speakers
: David Glasser\, Chair\, Ben Uri Gallery and Museum (which owns Dachinger’s Portrait of Wilhelm Hollitscher) will chair the event and will be joined by Anthony Spiro\, President\, Wiener Holocaust Library (which holds the Hollitscher manuscript). \nAll three authors will join the panel:\nInes Newman\, Hollitscher’s granddaughter\, will talk about her grandfather and read from the diary\nProfessor Charmian Brinson\, Emeritus Professor of German\, Imperial College London\, will provide a background to the wider policy of internment\nRachel Dickson\, Ben Uri Research Unit\, will discuss the relationship between artist and sitter internees and the importance of exiled artists. \nThe presentations will be followed by a Q&A session.\nPlease do join us for this stimulating evening.

DESCRIPTION:The Painter’s Hidden Masterpiece: the story of Johannes Matthaeus Koelz\, book cover (detail)\nSimon Lake\, former curator of the German Expressionist collection at Leicester Museum and Art Gallery\, will tell the story of a remarkable and until now almost entirely forgotten artist\, Johannes Matthaeus Koelz.  \nKoelz was a non-Jewish Bavarian realist painter\, born in 1895\, who fought in World War One and won the Iron Cross\, yet between 1930-37 secretly created a powerfully expressionist\, monumental anti-war and anti-fascist triptych called Thou Shalt Not Kill. Forced to dismember the work in 1937\, when facing imminent arrest\, he escaped Germany\, finally reaching England in 1939 with his family. DESCRIPTION:From 1932 to 1973\, Paul and Marjorie Abbatt Ltd. was the leading British company making and selling a range of toys and play equipment based on theories of child development and play. Teachers and shoppers looking for something brightly coloured\, versatile\, charming but robust and usually made of wood\, knew that their shop at 94\, Wimpole Street (designed by Ernö Goldfinger in 1936) or their mail-order catalogues would provide it.  \nInspired by what they saw in Austria\, Germany and Russia in 1931\, the Abbatts maintained contacts in these countries\, while providing opportunities for two Bauhaus refugees\, Franz Singer and Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack. They also helped rescue the specialist in play for disabled children\, Milan Morgenstern (another Bauhäusler)\, his wife and children from Vienna in 1938\, helping them to find their feet and contribute to this field in Britain. \nAlan Powers’ book\, Abbatt Toys: Modern Toys for Modern Children is published by Design for Today and he has contributed to an exhibition on the same subject at Margaret Howell\, 34 Wigmore Street\, from 23 October to 11 November 2020. \nTo book\, click here. \nThis event is organized by Insiders/Outsiders. \n  \n\nThis event will be held on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Ralph Koltai\, set design for Simon Boccanegra\, 1997\nBorn in Berlin in 1924\, Ralph Koltai CBE RDI (1924-2018) came to England in 1939 and after serving with British Intelligence at the Nuremberg Trials and on War Crimes Interrogation\, studied at Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and soon gained a reputation as one of the most original stage designers working in the UK. He carried on working (mainly on sculptural reliefs) until the time of his death\, having designed some 250 productions of opera\, dance\, drama and musical theatre across the world.  \nScenographer Pamela Howard will lead a conversation with theatre director Di Trevis\, Charles Woolff of Talbot Designs Ltd. and actor Simon Callow. DESCRIPTION:Laelia Goehr\, Yemenite Jewish Girl\, Israel\, 1951\nCellist and photographer Julia Crockatt will be in conversation with independent researcher John March about her remarkable grandmother Laelia Goehr (1908-2002). Born into a well-to-do Jewish family in Kiev\, she showed a talent for music from an early age. Soon after the Russian Revolution\, the family moved to Berlin (via Warsaw)\, where Laelia in due course became part of a successful cabaret duo called The Stone Sisters. In 1930 she married the conductor and composer Walter Goehr\, and in 1933 the couple fled to the safety of England\, where\, having worked as Bill Brandt’s assistant\, she established herself as a serious photographer.  \nThis talk coincides with the launch of a website\, which for the first time reveals the true extent of her photographic output\, which ranged from images of dancers and eminent musicians such as Stravinsky and Rostropovich through street photography to nudes\, flowers and animals. SUMMARY:Rudolf von Laban\, Reactionary Modernist
DESCRIPTION:The German Modern Dance aesthetic was formulated and choreographed by Rudolf von Laban\, with the help of his student Mary Wigman. Laban created a powerful and long-lasting international network of schools\, performance groups\, notation and therapy organisations. There is hardly a university in the UK and the US that hasn’t integrated part of Laban’s dance philosophy\, his terminology and his aesthetics into academic discourse. These are the commonly acknowledged facts and that is also where agreement ends. \nThere is no other comparable or equally powerful modern dance philosophy that covers all aspect of life with the same ambition\, with such far-reaching claims. Yet Laban\, like Wigman\, became an enthusiastic supporter of the Third Reich and both shaped dance politics and practices within the Nazi system.  \nHow can such a deeply problematic yet influential dance philosophy and aesthetic be reassessed\, rethought and then rewritten? What are the ethical legacies of Laban’s system? Emigration\, for a long time\, has represented the cleansing process that enables and legitimises the continued propagation of Laban’s theories. SUMMARY:“No way out”: The Ettrick\, Camp L and Camp N - Internment in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Camp L\, Quebec City\, Canada. Library and Archives Canada\nOn May 12\, 1940\, policemen knocked on doors all along the coast of Britain\, from Nairn to Hampshire. “Pack a suitcase and come with us\,” they ordered. The coastal area was now restricted. The internment of refugees had begun. Hunger\, filth\, dehumanizing inspections\, boredom\, and depression plagued them. For those doomed to a horrific journey on the HMT Ettrick\, it was that and more. The arrival in Canada\, first to Camp L and then Camp N (the ‘Kosher’ camp)\, did little to improve their plight.  \nDiaries\, documents\, and interviews at the Imperial War Museum—oral and written—as well as interviews with five survivors describe the intense hardships suffered by all and the spirit that helped to overcome them.
