SUMMARY:Schools on the Move: Bunce Court\, Gordonstoun and Camphill
DESCRIPTION:As a result of exile from their homelands\, Jewish refugee educators founded many schools in the UK. The schools were mostly boarding schools based on the principle of ‘Landerziehungsheime’ – ‘countryside educational homes’. The primary aim of all these schools in their early days was to support young Jewish refugees as they faced the challenge of establishing a new identity as they came to terms with an unfamiliar and alien environment. This talk by Marjorie Downward will outline briefly the outstanding educational work of Anna Essinger\, founder of Bunce Court School in Kent\, Kurt Hahn and Karl Koenig\, founders of Gordonstoun and Camphill respectively\, both of them in Scotland. \nA retired but still active musician\, Marjorie Downward has for some years taken a keen interest in 19th\, 20th and 21st century social history\, conducting independent research on a wide range of topics\, including the lead-up to war and the after-effects of war on society as a whole. She has been involved in editing stories of WW2 Refugees\, European Voluntary Workers and POWs who came to England and stayed\, resulting in a publication ‘When Europe Came to Shropshire’ by P. Fairclough; and has researched and helped with two publications about the pioneers and WW2 years of Gordonstoun School plus The Jewish X Troop.  \nTo book\, click here.

DESCRIPTION:Scenographer and musical theatre director Pamela Howard OBE\, creator – among many other memorable productions – of the wonderful Ballad of the Cosmo Café\, will be talking to Pavel Drábek\, Professor of Drama and Theatre Practice at the University of Hull\, about her recently-published ‘graphic memoir’\, The Art of Making Theatre: An Arsenal of Dreams in 12 Scenes.  \nIn her new book\, Pamela Howard shows how her life has always been part of the art of making theatre. Part memoir\, part a personal account of artistic creation\, it is a work of art in its own right. Its 12 chapters\, accompanied by original drawings\, offer insights into her creative processes and the journey through life of a celebrated artist\, ranging from her early life and influences\, to her time at art college and the inspiration she gained from travelling the world. \nFollowing the trajectory of her life\, the 12 ‘dreams’ are poised between memory and history and give an account of an artist’s growth\, resilience\, working patterns\, and life-changing encounters with remarkable personalities\, as well as the practical side of working in the theatre\, in visual arts and in education. Her art also tells unexpected stories of little-noticed people and émigré communities. SUMMARY:Ian McLaren: Stories of a Graphic Designer
DESCRIPTION:Penguin Books\, the Munich Olympic Games and Refugee Connections: Ian McLaren in conversation with Anna Nyburg about his life and work \nOn Wednesday 16 November at 6pm\, graphic designer Professor Ian McLaren will talk to design historian Dr.Anna Nyburg about his illustrious career at Penguin Books and beyond. \nIan McLaren has had a rich and varied career starting during the pre-digital days of graphic design. He took the unusual step of studying at the Ulm School in Germany\, based on Bauhaus principles\, despite knowing no German. Celebrated for his work at the 1972 Olympic Games\, he also worked widely in the field of book design\, for Penguin Books and beyond\, where he came into contact with celebrated designers such as Italian-born Mauthausen survivor Germano Facetti and Polish-born Holocaust survivor Romek Marber. He will also talk about his professional and personal encounters with émigré artists and designers\, Francis Carr\, FHK Henrion and Willy de Mayo. \nProfessor Ian McLaren attended the influential Ulm School of Design and in the 1960s designed material for CND\, The National Theatre and The Arts Council. He also designed many book covers for Penguin and Puffin before joining the Munich team in 1970. After Munich he moved to Paris\, where his practice designed visual identities for UNESCO\, Lyon Metro and the Centre Culturelle Georges Pompidou. He later went on to teach at various universities including the Glasgow School of Art and De Montfort Universities. \nDr. Anna Nyburg is an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London\, where she taught languages for some 30 years. She is a committee member of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies and a trustee of the Insiders/Outsiders Arts Foundation.. She is the author of a biography of the émigré artist Hellmuth Weissenborn\, a book on the émigré contribution to British art publishing and another on the refugees’ contribution to British fashion. Two of her essays appeared in Insiders/outsiders: Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Visual Culture. SUMMARY:The Messels at War: German-Jewish Responses to Twentieth-Century Conflict
DESCRIPTION:In a special online talk to mark Remembrance Day\, John Hilary will look back at the contrasting experiences of German-Jewish immigrants in Britain during the two world wars. Told through the lives of the celebrated Messel family of Nymans\, of which John is a member\, the presentation will examine the waves of violence directed towards naturalised Germans in Britain during the First World War and the personal anguish they faced as they were called upon to disown their heritage. It will also explore the treatment of German Jews who came to Britain in the 1930s\, granted refuge in their flight from Nazi persecution but then rounded up and interned as enemy aliens. Drawing on the family’s artistic talents\, the Messels reacted to the horrors of war with a full range of creative responses that went far beyond the expected. \nJohn Hilary is an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham and a representative of the Messel family to the National Trust. This first event is an online talk by historian Helen Fry\, based on her fascinating book Freud’s War; the second\, on Thursday 13 October at 2.30pm\, is an in-person guided tour of  the exhibition\, Lucian Freud: The Painter and his Family\, currently on at the Freud Museum\, London; the third\, on Thursday 20 October at 1pm\, an online talk by Elizabeth Lamle about Freud’s very early work and correspondence; the fourth\, on Thursday 27 Octoberat 2.30pm\, an in-person visit to the major Freud retrospective at the National Gallery\, preceded by an introductory lecture by art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen. \n\nLunchtime Lecture: Freuds’ War \nHistorian Dr Helen Fry charts the story of the Freud family following their departure from Austria as refugees during World War II. Despite his worldwide reputation as the father of modern psychology\, Sigmund Freud’s security in his native Vienna changed overnight when Hitler’s forces annexed Austria in 1938. It was after becoming refugees that the Freuds’ story took a fascinating turn. Following their dramatic escape from Austria\, Sigmund’s son Martin and grandson Walter enlisted in the British Forces. In 1943\, Walter volunteered for Special Operations Executive\, a secret British World War II organisation\, which sent him back to Austria to spy behind enemy lines. \nDr Fry has written over 25 books\, including Spymaster: The Man Who Saved MI6\, Churchill’s German Army\, and the bestselling The Walls Have Ears: The Greatest Intelligence Operation of WWII. DESCRIPTION:A talk by Dorothea Schöne about Jussuf\, Abbo\, a fascinating but still too little-known émigré artist\, who died in London in 1953. \nOn Tuesday 14 June at 6pm UK time\, Berlin-based curator and art historian Dorothea Schöne will give an online talk about sculptor Jussuf Abbo. Born in Safed\, Abbo moved to Germany in 1911\, where he established a reputation for himself as a portrait sculptor and printmaker and an active member of the Berlin artistic avant-garde. In 1935\, however\, he was forced to flee Germany\, and moved to England\, where – despite a network of well-wishers and supporters – he struggled to re-establish his artistic career. He died in obscurity in London in 1953. SUMMARY:Artists As Hybrids: A Talk by Stephen Duncan
DESCRIPTION:Image: Stephen Duncan\, Waiting for the Wind\, 1995\nStephen Duncan FRSS will be talking about his career as a sculptor in both the UK and Italy. Stephen is the son of poet Beata Duncan and grandson of the Weimar playwright Hans Rehfisch\, both born in Berlin and refugees from Germany in the 1930s. \nStephen trained at the University of the Arts\, London\, the Royal Academy of Arts\, London and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. However\, he began his career as an artist in his early teens when he turned his bedroom into a studio and became an assistant to several sculptors including Michael Werner and Gertrude Hermes. He will be talking about Michael Werner\, Willi Soukop and Riccardo Priulli Bon\, all of whom were refugees and émigrés in London and all of whom were interned as ‘enemy aliens’ in 1940. \nIn keeping with the themes of the Insiders/Outsiders project\, Stephen will be discussing the contribution these three ‘enemy aliens’ made to British culture and education by introducing the visual cultures of Germany\, Austria and Italy and how this gave rise to a ‘hybrid’ of influences on sculptors working in the UK after WW2.
