DESCRIPTION:Forman Lecture Theatre\, Royal Northern College of Music\, Manchester\nTo coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day 2020\, Monica Bohm-Duchen\, the initiator and Creative Director of the Insiders/Outsiders Festival\, will reflect upon her experience of working on the project\, and Norbert Meyn\, a professional tenor and the initiator of Singing a Song in a Foreign Land will give a talk-cum-recital about his on-going research on émigré musicians and composers. \nDr Norbert Meyn (Royal College of Music) is the Principal Investigator of the new AHRC funded research project Music\, Migration and Mobility which explores the legacy of migrant musicians from Nazi Europe in Britain through practical music making\, archival research and mapping. Norbert will perform a couple of songs by émigré composers Peter Gellhorn (1912-2004) and Karl Rankl (1898-1968) and discuss the challenges in contextualising\, researching and marketing this repertoire today. He will also give an outline of the repertoire written by these emigres in Britain and share his experience from performing this at the RCM and with his professional group\, Ensemble Émigré. \nMonica Bohm-Duchen is a London-based art historian and the initiator and Creative Director of the year-long\, nationwide Insiders/Outsiders Festival\, which celebrates the contribution made to British culture by refugees from Nazi-dominated Europe in a wide range of different media. Monica will explain her motives for undertaking this ambitious project and – since the festival officially ends in March 2020 – consider the ways in which it has been received and the longer-term impact she hopes it will have on keeping the all-important concept of cultural cross-fertilisation firmly in the public eye. \n4.15pm \nFree

DESCRIPTION:Cathedral Chapter House\, Truro Cathedral\, Cornwall\nSusan Soyinka\, Reuss’s biographer\, in conversation with Revd John Halkes\, who was a personal friend of the artist. \nTo commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on 27 January 1945\, Truro Cathedral will be holding an exhibition\, from 9 January to 7 February\, of the paintings of Albert Reuss\, an Austrian Jewish refugee. \nBorn in Vienna in 1889\, he fled to England in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution\, losing family\, possessions and his reputation as an artist. He first settled in St Mawes on the invitation of Cornishman and Quaker\, John Sturge Stephens\, who had helped Reuss and his wife Rosa to escape from Vienna. From 1948 until his death in 1975\, the couple lived in Mousehole. Reuss continued to work as an artist in England\, but his style changed dramatically\, reflecting the trauma he had suffered. This change in his work is evident in the exhibition. \nTo mark Holocaust Memorial Day\, the Cathedral will hold a special service of Evensong at 5.30pm. \nThe entry fee includes a glass of wine or juice served from 7.00pm. \n  \n

SUMMARY:From Heartfield to Memes: Lessons from History
DESCRIPTION:John Heartfield\, Krieg und Leichen – Die letzte Hoffnung der Reichen\, 1932\nFour Corners gallery\, London\nCritical photomontage seems to be making a comeback as meme. Made from reconfigured and recombined photographs (among other things)\, memes can be posted\, circulated\, and re-circulated in the digital age with a speed\, ease\, and reach that radical artists such as John Heartfield could only dream of a century ago. That digital facility is accompanied by certain conceptual facility\, however\, whose political message and tactics often verge on the simplistic\, the vulgar\, the ephemeral. This talk will explore some of the crucial complexities of Heartfield’s popular\, mass-circulation photomontages that illuminate how much they still have to teach us in the present\, volatile\, technologically-savvy moment. \nSabine Kriebel is the author of ‘Revolutionary Beauty: the radical photomontages of John Heartfield’ and Lecturer in the History of Art at University College Cork. \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Ceramic Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Hampstead School Of Art\nA talk amongst the ceramic works. \nJoin Janet Haig as she discusses her work with the Principal\, sharing insight into her work\, her practice and how she constructs ideas using techniques and personal responses\, to create series of works from figurative to vessels. This talk provides an opportunity to understand the life of a maker\, to ask questions and share your views. \nJanet Haig is a Hampstead-based ceramicist\, whose unique hand-crafted vessels and stoneware torsos have been shown in many galleries and featured in boutiques and magazines. Her work can be found in private and public collections\, including that of the Jewish Museum\, London. Characterised by their densely encrusted and corroded surfaces and organic forms\, they are clearly inspired by the many and varied wonders of nature. \nJanet Haig was born in Poland\, and experienced the hardships of the war years in a Siberian prison camp with her mother\, later discovering that their closest family had perished in the Holocaust. She studied painting in Australia and settled in the UK in 1962. \nHaig has revealed that her first inspiration might go back as far as those harsh days in Siberia: “My mother was able to take one object with her [to Siberia] and she suddenly saw this little pot (I still have it in my possession)\, which she grabbed hold of because\, as I was a baby\, she thought it would be useful to warm things up. It’s enamel\, blue on the outside\, white on the inside and maybe that has had some kind of inspiration on my pots.”

SUMMARY:Ernst Schoen – the life of an anti-fascist radio pioneer
DESCRIPTION:Still Life with Head\, Willi Baumeister\, 1930\nBishopsgate Institute\, London\nTaking the form of a live radio presentation\, this evening will highlight the fascinating life of Ernst Schoen (1884–1960)\, radio practitioner\, writer\, composer and lifelong anti-fascist\, as presented by Dr Esther Leslie and Dr Sam Dolbear. \nErnst Schoen\, the director of Radio Frankfurt\, was arrested in 1934 for crimes against the Third Reich\, which included the protection and encouragement of Jewish and Socialist colleagues. During his time as a radio producer and radio station manager in Weimar Germany\, Schoen had developed\, in collaboration with his school friend Walter Benjamin and others such as Bertolt Brecht\, Hanns Eisler and Anton von Webern\, a radical sound and radio practice aimed at the dissemination of communist principles through avant-garde techniques. \nEscaping to London\, Schoen continued his work as a radical socialist activist and writer from exile. Having studied music with Ferruccio Busoni and Edgard Varèse\, Schoen was also a composer and some of his beautiful 12-tone compositions will be presented separately at a free lunchtime concert on 20 March 2020 in the Great Hall at Bishopsgate Institute.

DESCRIPTION:Isokon Gallery\, Lawn Road\, London\n\n\nJacques Groag (1892–1962) was a prominent architect and interior designer\, originally from Moravia\, now in the Czech Republic\, but later living in Vienna. His wife was the textile designer Jacqueline Groag (1903-1986)\, born Hilde Pick in Prague\, who had trained under Josef Hoffmann. They moved into Lawn Road Flats in 1939 after first fleeing the Anschluss of Austria in 1938 and then the annexation of Czechoslovakia in 1939. \nIn Britain\, Jacques worked on the Utility Furniture program under Sir Gordon Russell\, was the main exhibition designer for the 1946 Britain Can Make It exhibition at the V&A\, and worked with his wife on the 1951 Festival Of Britain\, but he never designed another building again after arriving in Britain. His wife on the other hand was the most successful British textile designer of the postwar era\, only equalled by Lucienne Day. Jacqueline was made an RDI (Royal Designer for Industry) in 1984\, two years before her death. \nUrsula Prokop is a doctor of history and art at the University of Vienna\, and the author of the recently published book Jacques and Jacqueline Groag\, Architect and Designer: Two Hidden Figures of the Viennese Modern Movement. She will be joined in conversation with Tel Aviv architect Shmuel Groag\, Jacques and Jacqueline’s great-nephew. \n\n\n  \n\n18.30–20.30

SUMMARY:Milein Cosman and her friendship with Kyffn Williams
DESCRIPTION:Keats Community Library\, London\nMilein Cosman and Kyffin Williams studied together at the Slade School of Fine Art in the early 1940s\, when it was evacuated to Oxford. \nThis talk by Dr Ines Schlenker will explore their days at the Slade and traces Cosman’s post-war career in London that led to a co-operation with Williams on an arts programme for ITV and the creation of each other’s portraits in the early 1960s. \nCosman lived and worked in Hampstead and drew many local and nationally famous faces including Moore\, Hepworth\, Kellman etc. Many of her drawings are in National collections and also in private collections in Hampstead \nMilein Cosman lived in Frognal Gardens until her death in 2017.  She was brought up in Dusseldorf and moved to Hampstead in 1939 and then entered the Slade School of Fine Art during the war. After the war she began freelance drawing for newspapers and magazines specialising in the world of music and dance. She was also a prolific book illustrator and made a series of school programmes on drawing for ITV in the late 50s. She married musician and broadcaster Hans Keller in 1961\, with whom she often collaborated. In 1996 Sir Ernst Gombrich commented: “Posterity will be grateful to Milein Cosman above all for the sureness of her eye\, with which she has succeeded in capturing the unique quality of so many of our distinguished contemporaries.”  Her work can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery in London as well as in the collections of the British Museum\, The V&A\, the Ashmolean and the Fitzwilliam. \nKyffin Williams taught art at Highgate School form 1944-73 before moving back to Anglesey to become one of Wales’ best-loved artists.   He had got to know Milein at the Slade.   He was a Royal Academician and some of his work can be found in the RA permanent collection as well as the Government Collection\, The Arts Council\, and the National Museum of Wales. \nDr Ines Schlenker is an independent art historian with a special interest in degenerate and émigré art. The result is a definitive\, electrifying biography\, shot through with Freud’s own words. DESCRIPTION:Pallant House Gallery\, Chichester\nAlan Powers discusses the relationship between British design culture and the Bauhaus. \nAuthor Alan Powers will draw on some lesser-known aspects of the period described in his new book Bauhaus Goes West to discuss the anxieties about education\, design and industry during this time for which the Bauhaus seemed to offer a solution. \n\nAlan Powers writes on 20th century architecture\, art and design\, with recent books on Eric Ravilious\, Edward Ardizzone and Enid Marx\, and most recently Bauhaus Goes West (Thames and Hudson)\, a review in depth of the relationship between British design culture and the Bauhaus\, with some additional material on America. Alan mainly teaches at the London School of Architecture and is a former chairman of the Twentieth Century Society.

The result\, a ‘people’s palace for art and culture’\, was and continues to be an expression of a specifically social and moral agenda. \n

A range of distinguished speakers engage with topics that continue to resonate deeply: identity\, migration\, displacement and internment – and the power of art to reflect and respond to these issues. Each talk will be preceded by refreshments and followed by an audience Q&A. \nArt Treasures that defied Nazi Terror. The Story of Alfred\, Thekla and Hans Hess and their Passion for German Expressionism.  \nBetween the wars the Hess Collection was considered the greatest private collection of Expressionist art in Germany. The home of Alfred\, Thekla and Hans Hess was filled with works by Feininger\, Heckel\, Pechstein and many others. Economic turmoil\, the rise of Nazism and other factors witnessed the death of Alfred\, breakup of the collection\, and Thekla and Hans becoming émigrés to England in the 1930s. \nSimon Lake: scholar\, writer and recently retired senior curator of New Walk Museum and Gallery\, Leicester. \nAdmission free

DESCRIPTION:Pallant House Gallery\, Chichester\nMonica Bohm-Duchen considers the experiences of the visual artists who sought refuge from Nazi persecution in Britain. \nIn this talk\, Monica Bohm-Duchen\, Creative Director of the Insiders/Outsiders Festival\, celebrates the achievements and legacy of the European émigré artists during the 1930s but also reveals the challenges and obstacles they faced on their arrival in Britain. \n  \n\nMonica Bohm-Duchen is an independent art historian and initiator of the nationwide arts festival\, Insiders/Outsiders: Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Culture. She is also contributing editor of the companion book\, Insiders/Outsiders: Refugees from Nazi Europe and their Contribution to British Visual Culture.
