SUMMARY:Toys and Modernism: Paul and Marjorie Abbatt Ltd.\, 1932-1973
DESCRIPTION:From 1932 to 1973\, Paul and Marjorie Abbatt Ltd. was the leading British company making and selling a range of toys and play equipment based on theories of child development and play. Teachers and shoppers looking for something brightly coloured\, versatile\, charming but robust and usually made of wood\, knew that their shop at 94\, Wimpole Street (designed by Ernö Goldfinger in 1936) or their mail-order catalogues would provide it.  \nInspired by what they saw in Austria\, Germany and Russia in 1931\, the Abbatts maintained contacts in these countries\, while providing opportunities for two Bauhaus refugees\, Franz Singer and Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack. DESCRIPTION:Ralph Koltai\, set design for Simon Boccanegra\, 1997\nBorn in Berlin in 1924\, Ralph Koltai CBE RDI (1924-2018) came to England in 1939 and after serving with British Intelligence at the Nuremberg Trials and on War Crimes Interrogation\, studied at Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and soon gained a reputation as one of the most original stage designers working in the UK. He carried on working (mainly on sculptural reliefs) until the time of his death\, having designed some 250 productions of opera\, dance\, drama and musical theatre across the world.  \nScenographer Pamela Howard will lead a conversation with theatre director Di Trevis\, Charles Woolff of Talbot Designs Ltd. and actor Simon Callow. DESCRIPTION:Laelia Goehr\, Yemenite Jewish Girl\, Israel\, 1951\nCellist and photographer Julia Crockatt will be in conversation with independent researcher John March about her remarkable grandmother Laelia Goehr (1908-2002). Born into a well-to-do Jewish family in Kiev\, she showed a talent for music from an early age. Soon after the Russian Revolution\, the family moved to Berlin (via Warsaw)\, where Laelia in due course became part of a successful cabaret duo called The Stone Sisters. In 1930 she married the conductor and composer Walter Goehr\, and in 1933 the couple fled to the safety of England\, where\, having worked as Bill Brandt’s assistant\, she established herself as a serious photographer.  \nThis talk coincides with the launch of a website\, which for the first time reveals the true extent of her photographic output\, which ranged from images of dancers and eminent musicians such as Stravinsky and Rostropovich through street photography to nudes\, flowers and animals. SUMMARY:Rudolf von Laban\, Reactionary Modernist
DESCRIPTION:The German Modern Dance aesthetic was formulated and choreographed by Rudolf von Laban\, with the help of his student Mary Wigman. Laban created a powerful and long-lasting international network of schools\, performance groups\, notation and therapy organisations. There is hardly a university in the UK and the US that hasn’t integrated part of Laban’s dance philosophy\, his terminology and his aesthetics into academic discourse. These are the commonly acknowledged facts and that is also where agreement ends. \nThere is no other comparable or equally powerful modern dance philosophy that covers all aspect of life with the same ambition\, with such far-reaching claims. Yet Laban\, like Wigman\, became an enthusiastic supporter of the Third Reich and both shaped dance politics and practices within the Nazi system.  \nHow can such a deeply problematic yet influential dance philosophy and aesthetic be reassessed\, rethought and then rewritten? What are the ethical legacies of Laban’s system? Emigration\, for a long time\, has represented the cleansing process that enables and legitimises the continued propagation of Laban’s theories. SUMMARY:“No way out”: The Ettrick\, Camp L and Camp N - Internment in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Camp L\, Quebec City\, Canada. Library and Archives Canada\nOn May 12\, 1940\, policemen knocked on doors all along the coast of Britain\, from Nairn to Hampshire. “Pack a suitcase and come with us\,” they ordered. The coastal area was now restricted. The internment of refugees had begun. Hunger\, filth\, dehumanizing inspections\, boredom\, and depression plagued them. For those doomed to a horrific journey on the HMT Ettrick\, it was that and more. The arrival in Canada\, first to Camp L and then Camp N (the ‘Kosher’ camp)\, did little to improve their plight.  \nDiaries\, documents\, and interviews at the Imperial War Museum—oral and written—as well as interviews with five survivors describe the intense hardships suffered by all and the spirit that helped to overcome them. DESCRIPTION:Still from River of Steel\, directed by Peter Sachs\nThis session focuses on the distinctive work of German-born film animator and art director Peter Sachs (1912–1990) and the animation shorts of Cologne-born Peter Strausfeld (1910–1980)\, the latter directed and produced by the Austrian-born film-maker and manager of the pioneering Academy Cinema George Michael Hoellering (1897–1980).  \nRefugees from Nazi Europe\, they first met as internees on the Isle of Man. After their release\, each survived chiefly through animation shorts commissioned through the Ministry of Information who recognized the potential of animation for engaging UK audiences during the war years and after. DESCRIPTION:André Derain\, Pinède à Cassis (detail)\, 1907\nFor seven years\, the grandchildren of eminent art dealer René Gimpel (1881-1945) mounted a campaign to recover three paintings by André Derain\, which they believed were seized from their grandfather in forced sales during the Occupation of France. Finally\, a verdict in the case – Gimpel vs the French Government – was reached on 30 September 2020\, after copious research\, forensic detective work and two high court proceedings. One grandson\, also called René Gimpel\, will recount this extraordinary saga\, and describe how during the war his grandfather\, his English wife and their three children were involved in Resistance activities throughout occupied France. \nRené Gimpel will be in discussion with Sue Grayson Ford MBE\, co-curator of last year’s Brave New Visions exhibition at Sotheby’s\, which explored the legacy of émigré dealers from Nazi Europe\, including the Gimpel family. \nThis event is held in partnership with the Association of Jewish Refugees. Through the voice of one of the children featured\, film-maker Caroline Pick\, now over 60 years old\, the film shows an idyllic picture of middle class life from Czechoslovakia in the 1930s to Cardiff in the 1950s. But gradually the footage hints at something unspoken: snatches of tales of those left behind\, of silence about the past\, of absences unexplained\, of non-existent family members. \nThe intriguing juxtaposition of happy images and an increasingly uneasy undercurrent lead to a moving conclusion. His sweeping narrative crosses the Mediterranean and the Atlantic\, taking readers from the Middle East to the shores of America. Robert Winder\, whose 2004 book Bloody Foreigners details the history of immigration to Britain\, will discuss with him the major causes of mass flight\, from religious intolerance and ethnic cleansing to political persecution and war. They will cover the perils and traumas of flight and explain why refugees and asylum seekers have been welcomed in some periods—such as during the Cold War—and why they are rejected in times such as our own. \nPhilipp Ther is professor of Central European History at the University of Vienna. Robert Winder was literary editor of The Independent for five years and Deputy Editor of Granta magazine during the late 1990s\, and is a trustee of the Migration Museum Project in London. \nThis event is organised by Spiro Ark\, in association with Insiders/Outsiders.

A panel discussion about both films will follow the screening. \nJew Süss (1934)\, produced in Britain\, was directed by Lothar Mendes and starred Conrad Veidt – both Germans who left the country shortly after the Nazis won power in 1933. It was an adaptation of the 1925 novel by Lion Feuchtwanger\, about a wealthy Jew’s rise to power in eighteenth century Germany\, driven by his hope of bettering the life of all Jews. The film was intended as a clear rebuke to Nazi antisemitism and to draw attention to Nazi atrocities\, although arguably it is also troubling in its representation of Jews. \nJud Süss (1940) directed by Veit Harlan\, was one of the most successful pieces of antisemitic film propaganda produced in Nazi Germany. Jud Süss was launched at the Venice Film Festival in September 1940 to great acclaim\, receiving the ‘Golden Lion’ award. The film was a success at the box office\, seen by some 20 million people across Germany and Europe\, and became required viewing for all members of the SS. \nThe Pears Institute has been granted special permission by the German Federal Foreign Office to screen Jud Süss\, with the kind agreement of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung. The film will be shown with English subtitles. \nAbout the panel speakers: Erica Carter is Professor of German and Film\, King’s College London and Chair of the German Screen Studies Network. When Michael was growing up\, stories often hung in the air about his great-uncles: one was a clock-mender and the other a dentist. They were there before the war\, he would say\, and weren’t after. \nOver many years\, Michael tried to find out exactly what happened: he interviewed family members\, scoured the internet\, pored over books and traveled to America and France. The story he uncovered was one of terrible persecution – and it has inspired his poetry for years since. Here\, poems old and new are balanced against an immensely readable narrative; both an extraordinary account and a powerful tool for talking to children about the Holocaust. \nMichael will be in conversation with the Library’s Senior Curator and Head of Education\, Dr Barbara Warnock.

SUMMARY:Belonging and not Belonging
DESCRIPTION:Forman Lecture Theatre\, Royal Northern College of Music\, Manchester\nTo coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day 2020\, Monica Bohm-Duchen\, the initiator and Creative Director of the Insiders/Outsiders Festival\, will reflect upon her experience of working on the project\, and Norbert Meyn\, a professional tenor and the initiator of Singing a Song in a Foreign Land will give a talk-cum-recital about his on-going research on émigré musicians and composers. \nDr Norbert Meyn (Royal College of Music) is the Principal Investigator of the new AHRC funded research project Music\, Migration and Mobility which explores the legacy of migrant musicians from Nazi Europe in Britain through practical music making\, archival research and mapping. Norbert will perform a couple of songs by émigré composers Peter Gellhorn (1912-2004) and Karl Rankl (1898-1968) and discuss the challenges in contextualising\, researching and marketing this repertoire today. He will also give an outline of the repertoire written by these emigres in Britain and share his experience from performing this at the RCM and with his professional group\, Ensemble Émigré. \nMonica Bohm-Duchen is a London-based art historian and the initiator and Creative Director of the year-long\, nationwide Insiders/Outsiders Festival\, which celebrates the contribution made to British culture by refugees from Nazi-dominated Europe in a wide range of different media. Monica will explain her motives for undertaking this ambitious project and – since the festival officially ends in March 2020 – consider the ways in which it has been received and the longer-term impact she hopes it will have on keeping the all-important concept of cultural cross-fertilisation firmly in the public eye. \n4.15pm \nFree

SUMMARY:Talk: Albert Reuss\, Artist and Refugee
DESCRIPTION:Cathedral Chapter House\, Truro Cathedral\, Cornwall\nSusan Soyinka\, Reuss’s biographer\, in conversation with Revd John Halkes\, who was a personal friend of the artist. \nTo commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on 27 January 1945\, Truro Cathedral will be holding an exhibition\, from 9 January to 7 February\, of the paintings of Albert Reuss\, an Austrian Jewish refugee. \nBorn in Vienna in 1889\, he fled to England in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution\, losing family\, possessions and his reputation as an artist. He first settled in St Mawes on the invitation of Cornishman and Quaker\, John Sturge Stephens\, who had helped Reuss and his wife Rosa to escape from Vienna. From 1948 until his death in 1975\, the couple lived in Mousehole. Reuss continued to work as an artist in England\, but his style changed dramatically\, reflecting the trauma he had suffered. This change in his work is evident in the exhibition. \nTo mark Holocaust Memorial Day\, the Cathedral will hold a special service of Evensong at 5.30pm. \nThe entry fee includes a glass of wine or juice served from 7.00pm. \n  \n

SUMMARY:From Heartfield to Memes: Lessons from History
DESCRIPTION:John Heartfield\, Krieg und Leichen – Die letzte Hoffnung der Reichen\, 1932\nFour Corners gallery\, London\nCritical photomontage seems to be making a comeback as meme. Made from reconfigured and recombined photographs (among other things)\, memes can be posted\, circulated\, and re-circulated in the digital age with a speed\, ease\, and reach that radical artists such as John Heartfield could only dream of a century ago. That digital facility is accompanied by certain conceptual facility\, however\, whose political message and tactics often verge on the simplistic\, the vulgar\, the ephemeral. This talk will explore some of the crucial complexities of Heartfield’s popular\, mass-circulation photomontages that illuminate how much they still have to teach us in the present\, volatile\, technologically-savvy moment. \nSabine Kriebel is the author of ‘Revolutionary Beauty: the radical photomontages of John Heartfield’ and Lecturer in the History of Art at University College Cork. \n  \n

Many of her best-known books have been loved by generations of young children. Tributes pointed out that she was a German Jewish refugee.
