SUMMARY:Summit Dance Theatre & Ali Curtis-Jones
DESCRIPTION:Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, Old Royal Naval College\, London\nSummit Dance Theatre and choreographer Alison Curtis‑Jones give two works by Rudolf Laban a contemporary twist and new lease of life. Curtis-Jones re-imagines Laban’s work to create a new living archive\, reinvigorating Laban’s principles and archeo-choreological research. Drumstick\, the rhythm of the body made audible\, sees Summit DT dancers determine rhythmic phrasing of movement live on stage with musicians composing the sound score in real time\, responding to what they see. The second work\, Nacht is a political satire depicting the underbelly of Berlin’s Weimar period and the love of dollars\, deceit and depravity.

SUMMARY:The Laban Summer School
DESCRIPTION:Rudolf Laban in his workshop at Darlington Hall in 1938. Photo: Reproduced from The Laban Art of Movement Guild Magazine\, December 1954\nUniversity of Bedfordshire\, Bedford Campus\nEvery year The Laban Guild holds a Summer School which explores the work of modern dance pioneer Rudolf Laban in a contemporary context. \nThe work of Laban\, who took refuge in the UK from Germany in 1938\, gained great popularity in dance and physical education and still plays a key role in actor training. This year lead tutor Anna Carlisle offers a day based on Further Laban Studies for more experienced practitioners\, followed by site specific choreography\, while Cathy Washbrooke will offer a variety of sessions for those newer to Laban’s work. Other experienced Laban-based practitioners contributing to the course include Darren Royston\, Rhyan Parry and Uma O’Neill.

SUMMARY:Drumstick
DESCRIPTION:Bonnie Bird Theatre\, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, Old Royal Naval College\, London\nDance performance of re-imagined “lost” Laban work\, Drumstick \nOver the last two years\, Alison Curtis-Jones\, Artistic Director of Summit Dance Theatre and Lecturer in Dance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, London. has been researching two ‘lost’ works\, Ishtar’s Journey into Hades and Dancing Drumstick\, both choreographed by Rudolf Laban in Monte Verità\, Switzerland\, in 1913. \nAs she herself states\, ‘My work aligns with Primavesi’s category of re-creation\, re-invention\, re-imagining or re-envisioning where an artist has more freedom to explore and develop their own viewpoint on the work and how the work might be… My re-imagined Drumstick is an attempt to show Laban’s shift to arbitrary rhythm – a materialisation of extreme and subtle dynamic changes\, where dancers establish their own felt rhythms and work together in unity without sound and make stillness resonate. Musicians accompany the dancers\, playing in response to what they see\, not the other way around; it’s not radical today\, but it was in 1913!’ \nBook online here.
