SUMMARY:Rozsa's Wish and The Angel of Chomutov: Two New Works by Marilyn Herman
DESCRIPTION:Second generation composer Marilyn Herman will talk to founding director of Insiders/Outsiders Monica Bohm-Duchen and conductor Kǎrin Hendrickson about two brand new chamber works. SUMMARY:Ensemble ÉMIGRÉ - A Musical Salon
DESCRIPTION:Concert with Ensemble ÉMIGRÉ (Norbert Meyn\, director)\nSupported by the Austrian Cultural Forum London \nNorbert Meyn\, tenor/director\, Ingrid Pearson\, clarinet\, Abigail Lorrimer\, cello\, Christopher Gould\, piano \nRobert Kahn\, Egon Wellesz and Mátyás Seiber were well known and greatly admired by audiences in Germany\, Austria and Hungary before being persecuted by the Nazi regime because of their Jewish roots and forced to emigrate in the 1930s. All of them wrote a substantial amount of music in Britain\, which became their home for the rest of their lives. Ensemble Émigré aims to bring their extraordinary transnational heritage to life with engaging performances and narration. The work of the ensemble is closely connected with the AHRC-funded research project Music\, Migration and Mobility at the Royal College of Music. \nThis concert was originally planned as a live performance at the New North London Synagogue. It will now be streamed from the Performance Hall at the Royal College of Music. The concert is kindly supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum London.

SUMMARY:Ernst Schoen: Lunchtime Concert
DESCRIPTION:Bishopsgate Institute\nThis lunchtime concert features the recently rediscovered music of the anti-fascist and experimental radio producer and composer Ernst Schoen. Schoen\, a former director of Radio Frankfurt and friend of Walter Benjamin\, Bertolt Brecht and others\, escaped to London after being arrested for crimes against the Third Reich in 1934\, and continued his writing and activism in exile. He returned to West Berlin in 1952\, and died there in 1960. \nIn the first section\, singer Lotte Betts-Dean and pianist Joseph Havlat will perform a song-cycle written in 1932 in memory of Schoen’s friend Fritz Heinle\, who died tragically young in protest at war.In the second half\, Alka Nauman and Lucie Palazot will reconstruct a dance performance from 1924\, in the manner of Henri Chatin-Hofmann (second husband of notorious cabaret performer Anita Berber) in historical costumes specially reconstructed by Alicia Gladstone. The music\, a series of short pieces\, including one by Schoen\, is selected from the original programme and played by pianist Sam Draper. Schoen’s Brechtian Gebrauchsmusik will get a brief airing too. \nPresented by academics and writers Esther Leslie and Sam Dolbear\, this concert will be accompanied by a pop-up display of contextual documents and artefacts\, including materials relating to Schoen’s life\, as well as contemporaneous items from the 1930s East End held by the Bishopsgate Institute archive. \n

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day – Songs of Arrival
DESCRIPTION:Henry Watson Music Library\, Manchester Central Library\nAs part of Holocaust Memorial Day\, Manchester Jewish Museum’s song-writing group will present an initial performance of songs inspired by the moving stories of Jewish Refugees arriving in Cheetham in the 1930s and 1940s. We have been working with baritone singer Peter Brathwaite (originally from Cheetham) Israeli opera composer Na’ama Zisser and community composer and saxophonist Joe Steele for the past 6 months to bring to life the real life stories within our oral history collection\, highlighting the experience of those arriving in Cheetham having fled their home countries. \nYou will be able to hear these songs in different areas of the Henry Watson Music Library on the first floor of Manchester Central Library\, alongside some objects brought to Manchester by Jewish refugees. This musical installation will feature songs composed by the museum’s song-writing group\, ESOL students from Abraham Moss Adult Learning Centre and the poignant song ‘Lovesick’ by Na’ama Zisser performed by Peter Brathwaite. Come and experience a different way to honour the sacrifices made and the building of new lives in Cheetham. \nThe event is free and you are welcome to drop in from 4pm-5pm. A longer version of this work\, featuring new songs by Na’ama Zisser will be performed as part of our Festival of Belonging in March.

DESCRIPTION:New North London Synagogue\, Finchley\nA celebration of the musical contribution of refugees from Nazi Europe to British culture \nFor this concert\, NNLS members Ashley Solomon\, Maurice Chernick and Shirli Gilbert will work with Norbert Meyn (Royal College of Music) and Ensemble ÉMIGRÉ to celebrate the contribution of refugees from Nazi Europe to British culture through music. \nThe programme will trace the lives of Jewish émigré musicians who managed to escape Nazi persecution and helped to bring music in Britain to the world-leading standards it enjoys today. It will include the Huyton Suite for flute and two violins by Hans Gál (1890-1987)\, written for the only instruments available in the Huyton Internment Camp near Liverpool in 1940\, the beautiful Elegy for Cello and Piano by the composer and piano virtuoso Franz Reizenstein (1911-1968)\, played by the wonderful Gemma Rosefield\, and excerpts from the breathtaking Tagebuch in Tönen (Diary in Music) by Robert Kahn\, a cycle of 1160 piano pieces written mostly in the composer’s secluded exile in Biddenden\, Kent in the 1940s\, played by the internationally acclaimed pianist Danny Driver. The programme will be complemented by short excerpts from letters and other historical documents chosen by Shirli Gilbert and Norbert Meyn. \nEnsemble ÉMIGRÉ unites musicians in flexible combinations under the directorship of tenor and project curator Norbert Meyn. DESCRIPTION:Florian Kaplick en route to the site of Hutchinson Camp\, Isle of Man\nCample Mill\, Thornhill\, Dumfriesshire\nAs part of CAMPLE LINE’s Summer 2019 Edition\, Florian Kaplick will perform Kurt Schwitters’ sound poem Ursonate\, a vocal piece consisting of four movements\, an overture and finale. \nSchwitters began writing Ursonate in 1922 and first performed it in 1925 before publishing it in 1932 as ‘Sonate in Urlauten’ (Sonata in Primordial Sounds). Comprising repeated abstract sounds that involve physical vocal performance\, Schwitters noted: ‘The fourth movement\, long-running and quick\, comes as a good exercise for the reader’s lungs.’ Kaplick will also read some shorter Schwitters poems in English/German\, including a new interpretation of Schwitters’ famous poem An Anna Blume (1919).\nKaplick will give the performance within the context of the summer exhibitions: DOUBLE ACT by David Osbaldeston and FARM WEEDS by Charlie Hammond. DESCRIPTION:Portrait of Egon Wellesz © Lincoln College\nOakeshott Room\, Lincoln College\, Oxford\nEnsemble ÉMIGRÉ \nNorbert Meyn\, tenor\, Christopher Gould\, piano and Ingrid Pearson\, clarinet \nEgon Wellesz was one of the most renowned composers of ballet\, opera and chamber music in Austria up to the 1930s\, when he had to emigrate to Britain. He established himself also as a musicologist\, taking up a position at Lincoln College\, Oxford\, where he would remain as a Fellow for the rest of his life. His influence in British musicology cannot be overestimated and is widely acknowledged\, while interest in his compositions has been growing steadily in recent years. This concert will feature some of his works\, written before and after his emigration\, alongside those of fellow emigrées Ferdinand Rauter\, Karl Rankl\, Hans Gál and Robert Kahn\, who all have recently featured in the research and performance project ‘Singing a Song in a Foreign Land’ at the Royal College of Music. The concert will be followed by a short panel discussion and an exhibition of documents from the Lincoln College archive. \n  \n\n5.15pm \nThe concert will be followed by a wine reception with a small exposition of objects and documents about Egon Wellesz from the archive of Lincoln College.

DESCRIPTION:Florian Kaplick – photo ©Paul Yates\nHatton Gallery\, Newcastle upon Tyne\nIn a special event to mark the closing of Heather Ross’ installation The Loud and the Soft Speakers\, musician and performer Florian Kaplick (the main protagonist in Ross’s installation) will give a live performance of Kurt Schwitter’s two most iconic works. This will include a performance of Schwitters’ seminal sound poem The Ursonate (approx 40 mins) and a new interpretation of his famous poem An Anna Blume\, now celebrating its centenary year. This poem will be heard within a ‘recital collage’ created by Kaplick which references the work of American author Paul Auster. In three novels Auster uses a female character by the name of ‘Anna Blume’ in the very same spelling as Schwitters’ heroine of 1919. Intrigued by this and stimulated by the musical qualities of Auster’s writing\, Kaplick collages together excerpts from Auster’s novels with Schwitters’ poem – read in various languages – to form a new 20 minute performance. The film has been specially re-mastered for the centenary\, and Anton Weinberg will introduce this special screening. \n£5 \n7:30 pm Elias String Quartet \nIn 1945\, a chance hearing of Britten’s new opera Peter Grimes set the young Hans Keller on a new path as a writer on music. One of his first articles was the controversial ‘Britten and Mozart’\, outlining striking similarities in the two composers’ creative characters. In tonight’s concert\, Britten’s second quartet\, written shortly after the premiere of Grimes\, is heard alongside Mozart’s quartet in D minor\, K.421\, Keller’s analysis of which features in today’s music workshop. Drawing By Milein Cosman\, by kind permission of the estate of Milein Cosman\nGuildhall School of Music and Drama\, London\nAlison Garnham and Susi Woodhouse present their new centenary biography of Hans Keller (published by Routledge) in an evening of music and readings. This book\, the first full biography of Keller and the first appearance in print of many of his letters\, traces the development of Keller’s thought in response to the new culture in which he found himself after the war. It was a vital period for music in Britain\, fuelled by unprecedented public funding and the stimulating effect of pre-war immigration – while at the same time\, broadcasting and recording were changing for ever how music was experienced. Keller engaged intensely with everything happening around him and his writings reveal a profound insight into the impact of the changes as they unfolded. \nThis is the first of the Keller Centenary events and will concentrate on the roots of Keller’s musical thought in Haydn’s string quartets\, with illustrations performed by a student quartet from the Guildhall\, where Keller taught after his retirement from the BBC. \nThe event will be followed by an informal drinks reception. \nBooking required \nThis event is part of a series celebrating Hans Keller’s centenary: see Hans Keller 100 \n  \n\nLecture Recital Room\, 6 pm

On display will be a selection of the intimate portraits\, recently donated to the Royal College of Music Museum\, which offer an unparalleled glimpse into the rich musical culture of 20th-century Britain. \nThis evening of art\, music and history celebrates the donation to the Royal College of Music of Milein Cosman’s collection of drawings of musicians. The Milein Cosman collection has been generously donated to the RCM by the artist.
