SUMMARY:The Laterndl: A Light in Dark Times
DESCRIPTION:Das Laterndl (The Little Lantern) was the first and largest of a number of German-language theatres run by exiles in London during the Second World War. It reunited friends and colleagues who had worked together in Vienna at one or other of the political cabaret theatres which had flourished during the period of Austro-fascism\, 1934-1938. \nThe three actors who proposed the opening of a theatre at the Austrian Centre in March 1939 – Fritz Schrecker\, Franz Hartl and Franz Schulz – had clear aims in mind for the theatre. They wanted to give the wider refugee community hope and belief in the future\, contribute to the fight for a free and independent Austria and reach out and share stories with their British hosts. Perhaps\, just as importantly\, was an unspoken hope that theatre would bring a sense of agency and purpose to their life in exile. \nThis talk by Kat Hubschmann\, project archivist\, Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller Trust\, coincides with a new online exhibition entitled A Light in Dark Times on the same subject\, based on the holdings of The Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller Archive at the University of London. \nBooking details here

SUMMARY:The Art of Making Theatre: Pamela Howard in Conversation with Pavel Drábek
DESCRIPTION:Scenographer and musical theatre director Pamela Howard OBE\, creator – among many other memorable productions – of the wonderful Ballad of the Cosmo Café\, will be talking to Pavel Drábek\, Professor of Drama and Theatre Practice at the University of Hull\, about her recently-published ‘graphic memoir’\, The Art of Making Theatre: An Arsenal of Dreams in 12 Scenes. \nIn her new book\, Pamela Howard shows how her life has always been part of the art of making theatre. Part memoir\, part a personal account of artistic creation\, it is a work of art in its own right. Its 12 chapters\, accompanied by original drawings\, offer insights into her creative processes and the journey through life of a celebrated artist\, ranging from her early life and influences\, to her time at art college and the inspiration she gained from travelling the world. \nFollowing the trajectory of her life\, the 12 ‘dreams’ are poised between memory and history and give an account of an artist’s growth\, resilience\, working patterns\, and life-changing encounters with remarkable personalities\, as well as the practical side of working in the theatre\, in visual arts and in education. Her art also tells unexpected stories of little-noticed people and émigré communities. Pamela ‘s dreams have led her to work across the globe and teach and inspire several generations of theatre makers\, scenographers\, designers and visual artists. \n\nTo book\, click here.

SUMMARY:Festival of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:As part of its ‘wandering’ phase\, Manchester Jewish Museum has been thinking about the stories in their collection of Jewish people who came to Manchester\, how they attempted to assimilate and foster a sense of belonging. They present Festival of Belonging\, a multi-arts festival exploring these stories and making links with contemporary stories of migration to Manchester with the Jewish and non-Jewish communities. The festival brings together theatre\, comedy\, music\, installations\, family story-telling and a unique foodie film experience.

SUMMARY:Making Theatre in Exile
DESCRIPTION:The Hampstead Jazz Club: Duke of Hamilton Pub\, London\nDelving into a suitcase full of sketches\, songs and letters\, the theatre group [Foreign Affairs] brings to life the little-known story of the Laterndl Theatre in Hampstead\, established by a group of exiled actors and writers from Nazi-occupied Austria during the Second World War. Rekindling the Viennese tradition of political cabaret\, they reflect on their new surroundings and hopes for the future and bring a beacon of light to the 30\,000-strong traumatised refugee community. The Laterndl received wide critical acclaim and soon came to symbolise the community’s resistance to Nazi terror and assertion of an independent Austrian identity and culture. \n‘Making Theatre in Exile’ re-discovers the Laterndl Theatre through the work of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies on the Martin Miller and Hannah Norbert-Miller Archive. \nPerformed in the original German and English. Doors open 20:00. \nThis performance will also take place at 18:30–19:30 on Thursday 14 November which needs to be booked separately. \nAttendance is free\, but seating is limited and advance online booking is essential.  Seats are not numbered\, and are allocated on a first come\, first served basis. Due to licensing restrictions\, this performance is not open to under-16s.

SUMMARY:The Escape Act - A Holocaust Memoir
DESCRIPTION:The Lowry\, Salford\nSaved by the circus: the spectacular true story of how a Jewish acrobat escaped the Nazis by running away to join the circus! \nWriter and Performer: Stav Meishar \n\nThe Escape Act – A Holocaust Memoir is a one-woman theatre show incorporating circus and puppetry. It is based on the life of Irene Danner\, a Jewish acrobat who survived the Holocaust hiding from the Nazis at a German circus. The show goes back and forth between past and present\, between character and performer\, and combines the historical events of Irene’s life with the experiences of the performer as a grandchild to Holocaust survivors. \nThe play examines Irene’s life between 1933 and 1945: from a teen witnessing the rise of the Third Reich\, through joining the circus undercover\, to falling in love and starting her own family – all under the protection of the Althoff Circus. As the performer travels through Irene’s life it triggers memories of her own family history\, of struggles\, inherited traumas and their domino effect – and with the past looming closer and closer\, she is forced to invite it in. Both a historical and theatrical project\, it is a culmination of seven years of research into the lives of German-Jewish circus families between 1929-1945. \nRunning time: 75 minutes\nAge Guidance: Suitable for ages 10 and up

SUMMARY:The Escape Act - A Holocaust Memoir
DESCRIPTION:CircusMASH\, Birmingham\nSaved by the circus: the spectacular true story of how a Jewish acrobat escaped the Nazis by running away to join the circus! \n8.00pm \nRunning time: 75 minutes\nAge Guidance: Suitable for ages 10 and up

SUMMARY:Schwitters Spoken Loud and Softly: Florian Kaplick live performance
DESCRIPTION:Florian Kaplick – photo ©Paul Yates\nHatton Gallery\, Newcastle upon Tyne\nIn a special event to mark the closing of Heather Ross’ installation The Loud and the Soft Speakers\, musician and performer Florian Kaplick (the main protagonist in Ross’s installation) will give a live performance of Kurt Schwitter’s two most iconic works. This will include a performance of Schwitters’ seminal sound poem The Ursonate (approx 40 mins) and a new interpretation of his famous poem An Anna Blume\, now celebrating its centenary year. This poem will be heard within a ‘recital collage’ created by Kaplick which references the work of American author Paul Auster. In three novels Auster uses a female character by the name of ‘Anna Blume’ in the very same spelling as Schwitters’ heroine of 1919. Intrigued by this and stimulated by the musical qualities of Auster’s writing\, Kaplick collages together excerpts from Auster’s novels with Schwitters’ poem – read in various languages – to form a new 20 minute performance. Not to be missed this is a rare opportunity to experience these works live! \n  \n\n6-7pm\nDonations welcome\, free entry\nNo booking necessary
