SUMMARY:From Berlin to London: The Industrial Photography of Walter & Rita Nurnberg
DESCRIPTION:Nick Warr and Simon Dell – the curators of a fascinating exhibition Norwich Works: The Industrial Photography of Walter and Rita Nurnberg currently on at Norwich Castle Museum until 14 April – will talk about the too little known German-born émigré photographers Walter and Rita Nurnberg.Walter (1907-1991) and Rita (1914-2001) Nurnberg established a commercial photographic studio in London in 1934 after relocating from Germany. Walter\, a former pupil and tutor at the prestigious Reimann School of Art and Design in Berlin\, made a name for himself in product photography. After the Second World War\, the Nurnbergs concentrated their collective skills in documenting and celebrating the workers of Britain. \nOver the subsequent decade\, the Nurnbergs made photographs for many of the nation’s most significant companies and their distinctive style of black and white images transformed the image of post-war British industry. While the work they produced for three Norwich manufacturing institutions – Boulton and Paul\, Mackintosh-Caley and Edwards and Holmes – form the centrepiece of the current exhibition\, the speakers will set this work in the broader context of Walter and Rita Nurnberg’s lives and careers. \nDr.Nick Warr is Lecturer in Art History and Curation in the School of Art\, Media and American Studies at the University of East Anglia\, Norwich. He is also Curator of Photographic Collections\, Course Director of Art History and World Art Studies\, and Academic Director of the East Anglian Fim Archive. \nDr.Simon Dell is an art historian who taught at the University of East Anglia for over twenty years. His key research interests include photography\, with special reference to France\, Germany\, the Soviet Union and the United States\, and the relationship of the visual and the political in interwar Europe. \nImage: Walter and Rita Nurnberg\, Delivery of Soles\, 1948 \n  \nBooking link here

SUMMARY:The Photographs of Zygmunt Bauman
DESCRIPTION:Cultural historian Janet Wolff will introduce a less well-known aspect of the career of eminent sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. \nPolish-born Zygmunt Bauman\, who settled in the UK in 1971\, is known internationally as the sociologist of postmodernity and ‘liquid’ society. But he was also a serious photographer. The Photographs of Zygmunt Bauman\, a new publication edited by Janet Wolff and Peter Beilharz\, presents a selection of his black-and-white photographs\, together with a range of essays by colleagues\, friends and family about his work with images. The book features a mixture of short pieces on individual photographs and longer essays addressing aspects of Bauman’s photography and the life and work of his wife\, Janina. The book concludes with an essay by Karl Dudman\, one of the Baumans’ grandchildren\, based on a series of photographs he took in the family home shortly after his grandfather’s death in 2017. \nJanet Wolff is Emeritus Professor in English and American Studies at the University of Manchester. Artist Lydia Bauman\, Zygmunt’s daughter\, who is one of the contributors to the book\, will also be present. \nAll those signed up for this event will be eligible for 30% off the cover price. \n  \nTo book\, click here

SUMMARY:Edith and Kim: A Novel by Charlotte Philby
DESCRIPTION:Charlotte Philby\, granddaughter of Kim Philby\, talks about her riveting new novel\, Edith and Kim\, published on 31 March by HarperCollins. \n  \nOn Wednesday 23 March at 6pm\, Charlotte Philby will talk about her brand new and already much-praised novel Edith and Kim\, which focusses on the hitherto unexplored relationship between her grandfather\, Soviet spy Kim Philby and émigré photographer and ardent Communist\, Edith Tudor-Hart. SUMMARY:Sara Davidmann: My Name is Sara
DESCRIPTION:My name is Sara draws upon themes of family\, post-memory and the Holocaust. \nSara Davidmann discovered a family album of photographs and handwritten notes in German (never before translated)\, that tell a story her father was never able to tell – of the German Jewish side of her family. \nDavidmann’s father\, Manfred\, and his sister Susi survived the Holocaust by escaping from Berlin on the Kindertransport\, arriving in Britain in 1939. \nThe photo-album belonged to Davidmann’s aunt Susi. Early photographs show a family life of seaside holidays\, weddings and Berlin outings – a family Davidmann had not known existed. \nRealising that many of these people did not reappear in photographs taken after World War II she searched for traces of their lives. She uncovered over 130 pages of Nazi and official documents. These revealed that family members were deported to\, and murdered\, in concentration camps at Auschwitz and Theresienstadt. Others survived by escaping to Shanghai and France\, and by living hidden in Berlin with false documents. \nAt the same time – parallel to making these discoveries\, Davidmann used photography and video to make artworks using the material she was uncovering. Recognisable objects – hair\, family photographs and Nazi documents appear in the artworks – only to be disrupted by elements of fire and erasure. This is the first exhibition of this work.” \nAn artist’s book\, Mischling 1\, published by GOST\, accompanies the exhibition. Signed copies of Mischling 1 will be on sale during the exhibition. \nImage: Kinderfest I\, 2018. Chemigram made using a digital negative. Printed with the artist’s blood\, darkroom chemicals and bleach\, 30.5 x 40.5 cm. © Sara Davidmann \nEVENTS\nA series of talks and events will take place at Four Corners and on-line during the exhibition. These include an ‘In Conversation’ with the exhibition’s curator\, Katy Barron\, and a talk for the Insiders/Outsiders Festival with Monica Bohm-Duchen. \nPARTNERS\nThe exhibition is supported by a Philip Leverhulme Prize awarded by The Leverhulme Trust\, The Association of Jewish Refugees\, Cockayne Grants for the Arts\, and London College of Communication\, University of the Arts London.

SUMMARY:Generations: Portraits of Holocaust Survivors
DESCRIPTION:IWM London\, Lambeth Road\, London \nOver 50 contemporary portraits of Holocaust survivors and their families shine a light on the full lives they have lived and our collective responsibility to cherish their stories. \n“Packs a colossal emotional punch” – The Daily Telegraph \nIn partnership with the Royal Photographic Society (RPS)\, Jewish News\, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and Dangoor Education\, Generations: Portraits of Holocaust Survivors will showcase new works from 13 contemporary photographers\, all members and Fellows of RPS\, alongside photography by RPS patron\, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge. \nDisplayed for the very first time\, these powerful photographs capture the special connections between Holocaust survivors and the younger generations of their families. \nThe systematic persecution of Europe’s Jews by the Nazis between 1933 and 1945 led to the mass extermination of 6 million lives. For those who survived\, its memory and impact were life changing. \nThrough a series of individual and family portraits\, the moving photographs in this exhibition present a group of survivors who made the UK their home after beginnings marked by unimaginable loss and trauma. While offering a space to remember and share their stories\, these portraits are a celebration of the rich lives they have lived and the special legacy which their children and grandchildren will carry into the future. \nPhotographers include Frederic Aranda\, Sian Bonnell\, Jillian Edelstein\, Arthur Edwards\, Anna Fox\, Joy Gregory\, Jane Hilton\, Tom Hunter\, Karen Knorr\, Carolyn Mendelsohn\, Simon Roberts\, Michelle Sank and Hannah Starkey.

SUMMARY:Music and the Émigré Photographers: Companions in Creativity
DESCRIPTION:Jacqueline du Pré by Laelia Goehr (detail)\nOnline Event \n\nIt is a striking fact that a significant number of the photographers who found refuge in Britain in the 1930s started their professional lives as musicians and/or made a speciality of taking pictures of musicians and composers\, many of whom were personal friends. This event will not only reveal a rich array of musical images\, many of them less well-known than they ought to be\, but also evoke the deeply cultured milieu in which so many refugees from Nazism lived\, both in their countries of origin and in the UK. \nPhotographic historian Amanda Hopkinson will talk about her mother\, photographer Gerti Deutsch as well as fellow Austrian-born photographer and friend of Gerti\, Lotte Meitner-Graf. Cellist and photographer Julia Crockatt\, daughter of composer Alexander Goehr\, and granddaughter of conductor and composer Walter Goehr\, will talk about her photographer grandmother Laelia Goehr\, and picture editor and researcher\, (formerly at Getty Images)\, Leon Meyer will consider the work of Czech-born photographer Erich Auerbach. \nThe event will be chaired by singer and teacher at the Royal College of Music\, Nobert Meyn\, founder of Ensemble Émigré and the Music\, Migration and Mobility project. \n  \nThis event is held in partnership with Music\, Migration and Mobility \n  \nTo book\, click here.

SUMMARY:*Postponed* Another Eye: Women Refugee Photographers in Britain after 1933
DESCRIPTION:Dorothy Bohm: Petticoat Lane Market\, London\, 1960s. Copyright Dorothy Bohm Archive.\nFour Corners Gallery\, London\n  \n*POSTPONED DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS SITUATION*\n  \nThis Women’s History Month\, we celebrate some remarkable women who escaped Nazi persecution and helped to transform Britain’s photography scene. \nDuring the 1930s\, more than 80\,000 refugees came to Britain from Nazi-dominated Europe.  Amongst those escaping anti-Semitic and political persecution were a surprising number of women photographers. Often established practitioners\, these women brought fresh\, modernist perspectives that opened up British photography in the decades that followed. \nANOTHER EYE is the first UK exhibition to showcase this group of women\, exploring both their collective influence and inspiring personal stories. It is an opportunity to see original prints by established photographers\, including Dorothy Bohm\, Edith Tudor-Hart\, Elsbeth Juda and Gerti Deutsch\, and to discover new work by lesser-known practitioners like Elisabeth Chat\, Laelia Goehr and Erika Koch. \nFaced with the traumas of exile\, leaving behind their livelihoods and their loved ones\, these enterprising photographers overcame personal struggles to build new lives in Britain. Many re-established their studios\, producing portraits of Britain’s prominent cultural figures. Some worked in social-reportage\, documenting issues of the day for magazines like Picture Post and Lilliput. Others turned to commercial work in fashion\, advertising and publishing. \nANOTHER EYE explores how the experiences of these women refugee photographers played a significant role in representing post-war Britain. \n  \nTues-Sat: 11.00-18.00\nThurs 11.00-20.00 \n

SUMMARY:The Bauhaus in Britain
DESCRIPTION:Tate Britain\nThis free display considers connections between Germany’s Bauhaus School (1919–33) and the visual arts in Britain. It centres on the years 1934–6\, when the Bauhaus came into sharper focus in Britain through the presence of key publications and protagonists\, including Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy. Living and working for a few years in north London\, they encountered the likes of British artists Barbara Hepworth\, Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore. The display also highlights the work and experiences of lesser-known designers or teachers\, such as Naum Slutzky and Grete Marks\, who continued to live and work in Britain over the following decades. \n  \n\n10.00am – 6.00pm

SUMMARY:'You\, me and those who came before': V&A
DESCRIPTION:Image credit: Judith Kerr\, photograph by Jillian Edelstein\nGrand Entrance\, V&A\, London\nThe series of portraits\, ‘You\, me and those who came before’\, commissioned by Counterpoints Arts\, celebrates first and second generation refugees\, including the late children’s author Judith Kerr in one of her last photographs\, politician Magid Magid and actor Zoe Wanamaker. \nA reminder that people escaping war and persecution have been welcomed by communities in the UK for hundreds of years\, and that their stories and contributions are all around us. \n\nAs part of  Refugee Week Festival 2019\, Counterpoint Arts commissioned the celebrated photographer\, Jillian Edelstein to respond to this year’s theme of the festival – ‘You\, me and those who came before’. \nThe result is a stunning series of portraits featuring first and second generation ‘refugees’\, many of whom are public figures who we would not commonly associate with displacement. \nFeaturing Jillain’s images and design by Counterpoint’s long-standing collaborators\, BCMH\, this project invites us to revisit our understanding of our history and reminds us that people escaping war and persecution have been welcomed by communities in the UK for hundreds of years\, and that their stories and contributions are all around us. From the Jewish refugees of the 1930s to people fleeing Somalia\, Rwanda\, Kosovo and Palestine in the 90’s to people arriving today from Syria and elsewhere; they are part of who we all are. \n‘You\, me and those who came before’ portrait project will be presented on screen at Tate Exchange (5th floor – 21st to 25th May)\, V&A (Main Entrance – 17th to 23rd June) and Southbank Centre (projected on the side of the building – 17th to 23rd June). The portraits will also be distributed as printed materials to Refugee Week organisers across the country.

SUMMARY:'You\, me and those who came before': Queen Elizabeth Hall
DESCRIPTION:Image credit: Judith Kerr\, photograph by Jillian Edelstein\nQueen Elizabeth Hall\, Southbank\, London\nThe series of portraits\, ‘You\, me and those who came before’\, commissioned by Counterpoints Arts\, celebrates first and second generation refugees\, including the late children’s author Judith Kerr in one of her last photographs\, politician Magid Magid and actor Zoe Wanamaker.
