SUMMARY:Hampstead's Pioneers of Modern Art

Photo: Marilyn Greene\nMeet at Hampstead Tube Station\nIn the first half of the 20th Century Hampstead was home to some of the era’s most pioneering artists. We will walk in the footsteps of the Slade School artists such as Mark Gertler\, Stanley Spencer and R.W. Nevinson who socialised in Downshire Hill with the artistic Carline family. \nWe will hear of their loves\, hates and reactions to the First World War. A small diversion will take us to the Vale of Health where the former Vale of Health Hotel was situated and we will see the site of the old Hampstead fairground painted by both Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler. In Downshire Hill we will also discuss the role that Roland Penrose\, Margaret Gardiner and Fred and Diana Uhlman played in the art world in the years leading up to\, and during\, the Second World War. We walk to Belsize Park to learn of the Modernists including Henry Moore\, Piet Mondrian and Barbara Hepworth whom Herbert Read described as living as a “nest of gentle artists” and conclude with the refugee designers who stayed at the Isokon flats before moving to pastures new. \nThe walk is led by guide and art historian\, Marilyn Greene \n  \n\nThe walk duration: two and a half hours.

Much of the architecture echoed design trends in Europe and the walk includes passing housing by the émigré architects Ernst Freud and Erno Goldfinger. Elements of eighteenth-century architectural design were also an influence for some architects. \nPassing some more recent examples and of course striking non modernist Hampstead buildings\, this walk will finish at the iconic and idealistic Isokon flats in Belsize Park. SUMMARY:Jacques & Jacqueline Groag: Architect & Designer
DESCRIPTION:Isokon Gallery\, London\n  \nJacques Groag\, architect and furniture designer\, and Jacqueline Groag\, textile and pattern designer\, were two celebrated residents of the Isokon in the 1940s and early 1950s\, yet due to split residence between three countries\, which often did not communicate with each other in the 20th century\, the tremendous scope of work of these second-wave Viennese Modernists has only recently become known. \nThis exhibition covers their individual careers in Vienna and Czechoslovakia\, their lives as Jewish émigrés to London\, their collaborations\, and the couple’s unique contributions in Britain to postwar exhibitions\, monuments\, furniture and textile design. The Isokon exhibition describes the Groags’ remarkable range of contacts that included Josef Hoffman\, Ludwig Wittgenstein\, Adolf Loos and Trude Fleischmann\, while the display is copiously illustrated with many of their pre- and post-war works including commissions ranging from the Austrian Werkbundsiedlung\, to the Festival of Britain\, Gordon Russell\, Swan & Edgar\, Heal’s\, Colibri and Schiaparelli. Jacqueline\, some of whose original textiles are on show\, even created the fabric for a dress worn by the future Elizabeth II. \nThe book Two Hidden Figures of the Viennese Modern Movement by Ursula Prokop will be on sale at the Gallery throughout the season.

DESCRIPTION:House of Illustration\, King’s Cross\, London\nSpanning George Him’s long and versatile career as both an independent designer and as one half of the prolific Lewitt-Him partnership (1933-1954)\, the exhibition will include iconic wartime propaganda posters for the Ministries of Food and Information\, corporate branding for El Al airlines and adverts for clients like Schweppes\, Technicolor\, the Post Office and The Times. \nHim’s distinctive blend of hard modernist lines and empathetic humour marked his varied output\, from reportage and book illustration to his era-defining branding and advertising. The exhibition will display previously unseen working sketches\, original artwork and ephemera alongside Him’s most celebrated work\, revealing one of the most important graphic artists of the 20th century.

The Bye Bye Bauhaus day symposium\, offers new perspectives and stories that have not yet been told\, concerning design in Germany and Britain during the past century. \nThe programme opens with Richard Hollis on the Belgian Art Nouveau designer Henry van de Velde\, the subject of his new book and Professor Gerald Adler\, the English expert on Heinrich Tessenow. The morning concludes with three speakers on subjects relating to design\, with Tanya Harrod on the Bauhaus enthusiasms of the English handweaver\, Ethel Mairet\, Sophie Jump\, theatre designer and scenographer\, on the little-known collaboration between Marcel Breuer and the costume design group\, Motley\, in 1930s London\, followed by Dr Anna Nyburg\, on ‘Exiles and Textiles’\, the little-known story of official British support for manufacturers fleeing Nazi Germany. \nThe afternoon programme includes Valeria Carullo\, Curator\, The Robert Elwall Photographs Collection\, RIBA British Architectural Library\, speaking on the RIBA Refugee Committee. DESCRIPTION:Isokon Gallery\, Lawn Road\, London\n\n\nJacques Groag (1892–1962) was a prominent architect and interior designer\, originally from Moravia\, now in the Czech Republic\, but later living in Vienna. His wife was the textile designer Jacqueline Groag (1903-1986)\, born Hilde Pick in Prague\, who had trained under Josef Hoffmann. They moved into Lawn Road Flats in 1939 after first fleeing the Anschluss of Austria in 1938 and then the annexation of Czechoslovakia in 1939. \nIn Britain\, Jacques worked on the Utility Furniture program under Sir Gordon Russell\, was the main exhibition designer for the 1946 Britain Can Make It exhibition at the V&A\, and worked with his wife on the 1951 Festival Of Britain\, but he never designed another building again after arriving in Britain. His wife on the other hand was the most successful British textile designer of the postwar era\, only equalled by Lucienne Day. Jacqueline was made an RDI (Royal Designer for Industry) in 1984\, two years before her death. \nUrsula Prokop is a doctor of history and art at the University of Vienna\, and the author of the recently published book Jacques and Jacqueline Groag\, Architect and Designer: Two Hidden Figures of the Viennese Modern Movement. She will be joined in conversation with Tel Aviv architect Shmuel Groag\, Jacques and Jacqueline’s great-nephew. \n\n\n  \n\n18.30–20.30

DESCRIPTION:The Ken Stradling Collection\, Bristol\nThe Ken Stradling Collection is very pleased to be taking part in the international celebrations marking the centenary of the Bauhaus. \nThe Bauhaus in Bristol traces the story of the remarkable friendship between Bristol furniture manufacturer Crofton Gane and Marcel Breuer\, founding member of the Bauhaus in Germany and refugee. DESCRIPTION:u(p)m: The Museum of Decorative Arts\, Prague\nIn response to the positive reception the exhibition The Mad Silkman. Zika & Lida Ascher: Textiles and Fashion has enjoyed in the Czech Republic and abroad\, among scholars and the general public alike\, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague has decided to host an international conference. Experts from the United Kingdom\, France\, the United States\, the Czech Republic and other countries have accepted invitations. Talks will be divided into sections covering history\, art\, textiles\, fashion and current student projects. The conference will also look at migration and how it can contribute to society. \n\nZika and Lida Ascher left Prague in early 1939 for the UK. There Zika Ascher launched a silk business that was soon thriving – and began approaching top artists\, including Matisse and Henry Moore\, to produce designs for a special collection of scarves\, the Ascher Squares. Many of them\, and other exquisite pieces produced by the company\, are on show as part of an extensive exhibition in Prague. Nick Archer\, British Ambassador to the Czech Republic\, and Eva Zažímalová\, President of the Czech Academy of Sciences\, with the participation of Peter Ascher. \n“On hearing Zika Ascher’s life story\, I knew at once that the British Embassy had to be part of the celebration of his achievements at u(p)m in this\, our centenary year. Britain gave him a second chance when he was forced to leave his mother country. He paid us back handsomely\, with a flowering of his talent there which produced some of the most stunning fabrics of the century and a great textile business\, the legacy of which we now celebrate. DESCRIPTION:Cover for The Wonder World of the Seashore\, 1955\, with permission of Otto and Marie Neurath\, Isotype Collection at University of Reading\nThe House of Illustration\, King’s Cross\nHouse of Illustration celebrates Marie Neurath with an exhibition of ground-breaking graphic design that transformed children’s learning from the 1940s to today. \nMarie Neurath – an émigré graphic designer and author\, led a team at the Isotype Institute that produced over 80 illustrated children’s books from 1944-1971. The pioneering collaboration between researchers\, artists and writers produced infographics and illustrated diagrams to explain scientific concepts. \nThe exhibition will include spreads and working materials from book series that Marie Neurath produced\, including Wonder World of Nature and Wonders of the Modern World. \n  \n\nIn partnership with the University of Reading and Design Science\, supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council. The exhibition is part of Transforming science for young people: Marie Neurath and Isotype books for children\, a project aiming to find new audiences for the approach to science communication taken by Marie Neurath. \n

SUMMARY:Refuge Britain - Stories of Emigré Designers
DESCRIPTION:Senate House\, University of London\nAspects of Exile \nRefuge Britain – Stories of Emigré Designers\nSpeakers: Anna Nyburg and Robert Sternberg \nRefuge Britain is a 45 minute documentary film made by Anna Nyburg and Robert Sternberg\, which will be screened alongside a Q&A. Framed by the life of a recent refugee from Pakistan\, the film uses archive footage and conversations with the descendants of three Jewish émigré designers\, Hans Schleger\, Elizabeth Tomalin and Tibor Reich to explore the impact of refugee designers on the cultural life of Britain from the late 1930s until the 1970s. \nThe film includes interviews with the grandson (Thomas Heatherwick) of a refugee textile designer whose archive is held at The M&S archive in Leeds. A second refugee textile designer\, Tibor Reich\, whose grandson is interviewed in the film studied at the progressive textile department of Leeds University\, where he came to from anti-semitic Vienna in the 1930s. The third refugee from Nazism is the famous graphic designer Hans Schleger. DESCRIPTION:London Transport Museum\nIn the 1930s\, numerous artists and designers fled Nazi Europe and settled in the UK. London Transport\, under the direction of Chief Executive Frank Pick\, commissioned many of the best of these émigré designers to produce some of the most distinctive posters on the network. \nThe Museum’s Poster Parade of twenty posters celebrates four decades of their work\, featuring well-known designers such as Hans Schleger (Zero)\, Hans Unger and László Moholy-Nagy. It reflects their contribution to what is considered a golden age of poster design.

DESCRIPTION:Isokon and the Bauhaus in Britiain\nThe Aram Gallery\, London\nBuilt in 1934\, the Isokon building in Hampstead\, London was England’s first modernist apartment building. Clients Jack and Molly Pritchard commissioned architect Wells Coates to design the building and explore the concept of minimal living. DESCRIPTION:George Teltscher ‘Das Mechanische Ballet’\, c.1923Archive of George Adams by kind permission of Sara Adams\nThe Isokon Gallery\, London\nBorn George Teltscher in Vienna\, Adams studied at the Bauhaus under Gropius\, Itten\, Kandinsky and Schlemmer and arrived in London in 1938. Following internment in Australia he returned to England and contributed to the war effort in map making and pamphlet design. He took part in the Festival of Britain (1951) and\, although not well-known today\, became a key figure in bringing Bauhaus ideas and pedagogy to Britain as a prolific graphic designer and long-standing teacher at the London College of Printing. \n  \n\nWeekends only: 11.00am-4.00pm

DESCRIPTION:u(p)m: The Museum of Decorative Arts\, Prague\nThe story of Zika and Lída Ascher who left Czechoslovakia before the outbreak of WW2 and built a textile empire in the United Kingdom which supplied fabrics to the international fashion industry from the 40‘s. \nNewlyweds Zika and Lida Ascher left Prague in early 1939 for the UK. There Zika Ascher launched a silk business that was soon thriving – and began approaching top artists\, including Matisse and Henry Moore\, to produce designs for a special collection of scarves\, the Ascher Squares. Many of them\, and other exquisite pieces produced by the company\, are now on show as part of an extensive exhibition in the Czech capital. \nOpening Hours\nWednesday – Sunday 10 am–6 pm\nTuesday 10 am–8 pm\nMonday closed
