SUMMARY:The Refugee and the Survivor – a Family Story
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated presentation by Michael Lewis weaves together the story of his parents\, of his father\, a refugee from Nazi persecution and his mother\, a Holocaust survivor. It draws on her memoir\, A Time to Speak (1992) and Michael’s own book\, Flight from Prague – the Making of a Refugee (2025)\, which for the first time tells his father’s story. \nHarry Lewy and Helene Katz came from Trautenau\, today Trutnov\, then in Austria Hungary\, now in the Czech Republic. They were friends from childhood. \nIn 1938 Michael’s father fled for his life when\, after Munich\, his Sudetenland home was incorporated into the Nazi Reich. A refugee\, embarked on a life of uncertainty and fear\, loneliness and isolation\, unwanted and penniless\, he eventually found sanctuary and work in Belfast. \nIn 1938 his mother was married to Paul Herrmann and living in Prague\, having successfully completed professional training as a choreographer\, teacher and dancer. In 1942 she was deported to Terezin / Theresienstadt\, in May 1944 to Auschwitz-Birkenau and in July 1944 to Stutthof. She survived. Widowed and seriously ill\, she returned to Prague in June 1945. \nFinding her name on a list of survivors\, Harry made contact. In 1947 they married in Prague before settling in Belfast. The family changed its name to Lewis in 1949. Helen gradually recovered her health and had a distinguished career as an innovative choreographer and then author\, widely recognized and honoured as an inspirational figure. Behind her achievements against all the odds stood Harry’s quiet unstinting love and support. \nMichael Lewis was born in Belfast. He taught for 35 years in comprehensive schools\, becoming the headteacher of King Edward VII School in Sheffield between 1988 and 2008. After retirement he served for 14 years as a lay Employment Tribunal member\, a member of the Teaching Regulation Agency Teacher Conduct panel and of the Independent Ethics Panel of South Yorkshire Police. In 2009 The University of Sheffield awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters. He lives in Sheffield\, is married to Petra and has two sons and three grandchildren. \n\nImage: Harry and Helen’s wedding\, Prague 16 June 1947 \n\nTo book\, click here.

SUMMARY:Tribute to Kurt Jooss (1901-79)
DESCRIPTION:Kurt Jooss trained as a dancer with Rudolf Laban in the early 1920s and then worked as choreographer for the avant-garde Neue Tanzbühne. After studying ballet in Vienna and Paris\, Jooss returned to Germany and established a school and a company there\, also becoming ballet master at the Essen Opera House. \nIn 1932 he created his best-known work\, the powerfully prophetic dance-drama The Green Table\, which won first prize in an international choreographic competition in Paris. His company became known as Ballets Jooss and made a world tour during 1933 and 1934. \nBecause Adolf Hitler had come to power (the Nazis had ordered Jooss to dismiss all the Jews associated with his company and he refused)\, Jooss did not return to Germany but with Sigurd Leeder – at the invitation of Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst – made his headquarters at Dartington Hall in Devon. \nHe returned to Essen in 1949\, as a British citizen\, and reopened his school there. Widely credited with being the founder of Tanztheater\, Jooss greatly expanded the technical and thematic possibilities of theatrical dance and exerted a profound influence on other dancer-choreographers such as Pina Bausch. \nTaking part in this special event\, which marks the 120th anniversary of Jooss’ birth\, are dance historians Marion Kant\, Laure Guilbert and Patricia Stockmann\, Julia Seiber Boyd\, daughter of Lilla Bauer\, an important member of the Ballets Jooss\, and Lucie Conrad\, Kurt Jooss’s granddaughter. \nTo book\, click here.

SUMMARY:Summit Dance Theatre & Ali Curtis-Jones
DESCRIPTION:Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, Old Royal Naval College\, London\nSummit Dance Theatre and choreographer Alison Curtis‑Jones give two works by Rudolf Laban a contemporary twist and new lease of life. Curtis-Jones re-imagines Laban’s work to create a new living archive\, reinvigorating Laban’s principles and archeo-choreological research. Drumstick\, the rhythm of the body made audible\, sees Summit DT dancers determine rhythmic phrasing of movement live on stage with musicians composing the sound score in real time\, responding to what they see. The second work\, Nacht is a political satire depicting the underbelly of Berlin’s Weimar period and the love of dollars\, deceit and depravity.

SUMMARY:The Laban Summer School
DESCRIPTION:Rudolf Laban in his workshop at Darlington Hall in 1938. Photo: Reproduced from The Laban Art of Movement Guild Magazine\, December 1954\nUniversity of Bedfordshire\, Bedford Campus\nEvery year The Laban Guild holds a Summer School which explores the work of modern dance pioneer Rudolf Laban in a contemporary context. \nThe work of Laban\, who took refuge in the UK from Germany in 1938\, gained great popularity in dance and physical education and still plays a key role in actor training. This year lead tutor Anna Carlisle offers a day based on Further Laban Studies for more experienced practitioners\, followed by site specific choreography\, while Cathy Washbrooke will offer a variety of sessions for those newer to Laban’s work. Other experienced Laban-based practitioners contributing to the course include Darren Royston\, Rhyan Parry and Uma O’Neill.

SUMMARY:Drumstick
DESCRIPTION:Bonnie Bird Theatre\, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, Old Royal Naval College\, London\nDance performance of re-imagined “lost” Laban work\, Drumstick \nOver the last two years\, Alison Curtis-Jones\, Artistic Director of Summit Dance Theatre and Lecturer in Dance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance\, London. has been researching two ‘lost’ works\, Ishtar’s Journey into Hades and Dancing Drumstick\, both choreographed by Rudolf Laban in Monte Verità\, Switzerland\, in 1913. \nAs she herself states\, ‘My work aligns with Primavesi’s category of re-creation\, re-invention\, re-imagining or re-envisioning where an artist has more freedom to explore and develop their own viewpoint on the work and how the work might be… My re-imagined Drumstick is an attempt to show Laban’s shift to arbitrary rhythm – a materialisation of extreme and subtle dynamic changes\, where dancers establish their own felt rhythms and work together in unity without sound and make stillness resonate. Musicians accompany the dancers\, playing in response to what they see\, not the other way around; it’s not radical today\, but it was in 1913!’ \nBook online here.
