SUMMARY:Art Aiding Politics: Hampstead in the 1930s and '40s
DESCRIPTION:Klaus Zimmerman\, Ugly Times\, oil on board\, c.1940. Copyright Eva Zimmermann\nBurgh House & Hampstead Museum\, London\nHampstead has been a place of refuge\, reflection and community for centuries. This exhibition aims to show the response of some of its most creative residents to the tumultuous political events of the early twentieth century; from the Spanish Civil War to the rise of the Nazi party and the outbreak of the Second World War and beyond. Including art and artefacts relating to Roland Penrose and Lee Miller\, Fred Uhlman\, Milein Cosman\, FHK Henrion and many others\, this exhibition will examine the artists’ reactions to these events\, and the communities of support that developed as a result.

DESCRIPTION:Herbert Bier © The Wallace Collection\nVisitors’ Library\, Wallace Collection\, London\nA chance to view the archive material and hear a talk by his daughter Marion Davies on the life of the art dealer Herbert Bier (1905-1981) in the Visitors’ Library at the Wallace Collection. Bier had clients from all over the world and dealt with top museums in Britain\, America and Australia. His interests and expertise were wide-ranging and thousands of works of art passed through his hands during his lifetime. He was meticulous record keeper and his archive is not only useful for provenance research of paintings but shows the discrimination he faced in Germany as well as life in London after he emigrated in 1936. \n  \nSpace limited to 25 people\, booking essential. Best known for her drawings of musicians and dancers\, she excelled at chronicling contemporary life\, developing a unique drawing technique that enabled her to capture the most fleeting of moments. Born into a Jewish family in Germany and educated in Britain during the Second World War\, Cosman’s art is among the finest and most representative of her time\, though still little known to a wider public. Ceaselessly sketching\, she created a pictorial who’s who of the cultural elite from the second half of the twentieth century.

DESCRIPTION:Maurice Blik\nBowman Sculpture\, London\nAfter decades of making sculpture\, in the last two years\, Maurice Blik has identified a unique and personal way of working to externalise his thoughts and feelings.  Now his sculptures leap\, dance\, stride\, walk\, hurry\, peer\, to express what it feels like to be alive. \nBorn in Amsterdam in 1939 and having survived Bergen-Belsen\, Maurice arrived in the UK aged six. DESCRIPTION:Chana Kowalska\, The Bridge\, 1937\nPOSK Gallery\, Hammersmith\, London\nDays after the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War that changed the fate of Poland and Europe forever\, the Polish Social and Cultural Association’s Gallery in London (POSK) opens a unique exhibition celebrating the contribution of Polish artists who fled Nazi-dominated Europe to British culture. \nOutlook: No Return features works of 16 Polish artists who reflect the diverse make-up of pre-war Poland’s population\, including Europe’s largest Jewish community. \nThe exhibition – featuring\, among others\, Jankel Adler\, Josef Herman\, Feliks Topolski\, Stanislaw Frenkiel and Raya Herzig – tells their post-war stories and explores their feeling of unbearable and inexplicable loss following the occupation of Poland\, the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe\, and the Holocaust that changed their lives forever. While often naturalised as British citizens and recognised for their extraordinary talent and contribution to British culture\, these refugee artists remained seen as outsiders coming from a ‘far away country of which we know little’. Britain was a country they did not expect to be their new home\, and as they were settling in the new reality\, they were faced with nostalgia and longing for their old\, now-gone existence without any possibility of fulfilment. At the time of Britain’s gravest political crisis and rapidly shifting attitudes towards migration to Britain\, this exhibition is a forceful and compelling defence of openness and tolerance and a testament to the benefits of cultural exchange – even in the darkest of times. \n  \nOpening talk by David Herman: 15 September\, 5pm

Her work was linked with both Käthe Kollwitz and the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement\, including Otto Dix and George Grosz. She settled in Manchester where she exhibited at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts\, and with the Manchester Group which included L S Lowry. DESCRIPTION:Refugee from Ivory Coast © Nina Emet\nLondon College of Communication\, London\n  \n \n20:20 is a multimedia\, touring arts and heritage project that casts a long lens over the personal memories of refugee families who arrived in the UK from 1999 onwards from Kosovo and other major global conflicts. \nSupported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund\, 20:20 is led by Salusbury World Refugee Centre and co-curated by FotoDocument and London College of Communication. The project collects and explores the oral histories of 20 refugees over 20 years\, creating artistic responses in the form of multimedia exhibitions and performance. \nThe stories focus on memories of homeland and agile adaptations to exile\, exploring resilience\, polyglotism and celebrating transnational culture in the UK. The artwork interprets the narratives through objects\, film\, illustration\, typography\, digital art\, animation\, motion design and graphic design – demanding a visceral audience response. \nSalusbury World is a visionary London refugee charity\, which has supported refugee children and their families for the past 20 years and 20:20 celebrates its 20th birthday. \nThe exhibition prototyped at the Victoria & Albert Museum in June 2019 and went on to be exhibited at London College of Communication in October as part of London Design Festival 2019. \n  \n\nIt is currently being exhibited at the following two venues until 14th February 2019:\n31 October 2019 – 14 February 2020: Brent Civic Centre\n31 October – 31 December 2019: Willesden Library \n

DESCRIPTION:Detail of the mural ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’ painted in 1944 by Hans Feibusch\, in the crypt at St Elisabeth’s Church\, Eastbourne.\nMartyrs’ Gallery\, Star Brewery\, Lewes\nMartyrs’ Gallery is presenting an exhibition of words and images that depicts and celebrates Hans Feibusch’s allegorical mural Pilgrim’s Progress. \nPilgrim’s Progress was created in 1944 and uses John Bunyan’s allegorical story to tell Feibusch’s own story of escape from Nazi Germany and his arrival in 1930s England. It was painted for the crypt of St Elisabeth’s Church in Eastbourne and presented as a gift to the local community\, but has been out of sight since 2002 when the church was closed. SUMMARY:Hampstead's Pioneers of Modern Art

Photo: Marilyn Greene\n\nMeet at Hampstead Tube Station\nIn the first half of the 20th Century Hampstead was home to some of the era’s most pioneering artists. We will walk in the footsteps of the Slade School artists such as Mark Gertler\, Stanley Spencer and R.W. Nevinson who socialised in Downshire Hill with the artistic Carline family. \nWe will hear of their loves\, hates and reactions to the First World War. A small diversion will take us to the Vale of Health where the former Vale of Health Hotel was situated and we will see the site of the old Hampstead fairground painted by both Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler. In Downshire Hill we will also discuss the role that Roland Penrose\, Margaret Gardiner and Fred and Diana Uhlman played in the art world in the years leading up to\, and during\, the Second World War. We walk to Belsize Park to learn of the Modernists including Henry Moore\, Piet Mondrian and Barbara Hepworth whom Herbert Read described as living as a “nest of gentle artists” and conclude with the refugee designers who stayed at the Isokon flats before moving to pastures new. \nThe walk is led by guide and art historian\, Marilyn Greene \n  \n\nThe walk duration: two and a half hours.

DESCRIPTION:The Émigrés who transformed the British Art World\nCharles and Peter Gimpel of Gimpel Fils Ida Kar\, 1958 © National Portrait Gallery\, London\nThis major new exhibition\, open from 17 July to 9 August\, tells the story of the pioneering émigré dealers and publishers who revolutionised Britain’s art world. \nBrave New Visions shows how in bleak post-war London\, a group of émigrés who had found sanctuary in Britain in the 1930s re-made their lives and introduced avant-garde European and British artists such as Naum Gabo\, Oskar Kokoschka\, Kurt Schwitters\, Graham Sutherland and Ben Nicholson to the broader public. \nFeaturing over 40 paintings and sculptures\, alongside unique documentary material\, the exhibition reveals the little-explored narrative that binds the founders of what are now some of the best known establishments on the London art scene\, including Marlborough Fine Art\, Crane Kalman Gallery\, Annely Juda Fine Art and Gimpel Fils. \nFellow émigrés Béla Horovitz and Ludwig Goldscheider at Phaidon\, and Walter Neurath and Eva Feuchtwang at Thames & Hudson\, led a parallel revolution in the staid world of British publishing. This exhibition\, part of the Kings Lynn Festival\, will be the first in the UK to showcase a large number of drawings which had been considered lost but were rediscovered in 2012. Metzger came from Nuremberg to Britain in 1939 with the Kindertransport. He was a political activist and revolutionary artist\, a proponent of Auto-Destructive Art and the ‘art strike’ who challenged artistic conventions and championed social responsibility. \nSupported by East Anglia Art Fund\, King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council\, Norfolk County Council.

SUMMARY:In the Footsteps of Fred Uhlman: Art and Refugees in Hampstead
DESCRIPTION:Hampstead Tube Station\nFred Uhlman was born to a Jewish family in Germany where he practiced as a lawyer. With the rise of the Nazis in 1933\, he moved to France where as he was not allowed to practice law\, he supported himself by privately selling his art work. In 1936\, he met a wealthy English woman\, Diana Croft and later that year moved to England and married her. They settled in Downshire Hill\, Hampstead in 1938. In this walk we discover how together they formed the Artists Refugee Committee to rescue artists trapped in Czechoslovakia\, about how their house became a refuge for artists and about the organisations that they were involved with. We visit sites Uhlman was known to frequent and discuss the role of his artistic friends and neighbours and consider other refugees who settled in Hampstead during this time. \n  \n\n3.00pm-5.00pm

DESCRIPTION:Tate Britain\nThis free display considers connections between Germany’s Bauhaus School (1919­–33) and the visual arts in Britain. It centres on the years 1934–6\, when the Bauhaus came into sharper focus in Britain through the presence of key publications and protagonists\, including Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy. Living and working for a few years in north London\, they encountered the likes of British artists Barbara Hepworth\, Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore. DESCRIPTION:Friedrich Nagler Wunderkammer at Pallant House Gallery. Photo credit Martin Nagler\nHove Museum & Art Gallery\, East Sussex\nFriedrich Nagler (1920 – 2009) was a Jewish émigré and self-taught artist born in Vienna\, Austria. He escaped Nazi occupation in 1938 and after being interned in England was deported to Canada as an ‘enemy alien’ by the British government. He returned after the war and settled in Petersfield\, Hampshire. Consumed by a passion for making\, Nagler created thousands of works of art\, some of which are inspired by his flight from Nazi-occupied Austria to England. \nThis project\, produced in partnership with award-winning arts charity Outside In\, will see never before seen works on display at Hove Museum and Art Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Walter Nessler\, Pigeons on Window Sill\, 1952\, oil on board\, Pallant House Gallery © The Artist’s Estate\nPallant House Gallery\, Chichester\nA significant display of the work of German-born artist Walter Nessler (1912 – 2001)\, who emigrated to Britain in the 1930s. Though not Jewish\, he was violently opposed to fascist ideology and was denounced as ‘degenerate’ by the Nazi regime. This exhibition examines the breadth and versatility of Nessler’s artistic practice from his dynamic and foreboding wartime cityscapes to his exuberant post war paintings. These later works were inspired by his passion for jazz\, the inspiration of Matisse and his acquaintance with artists including Picasso\, Giacometti and Cocteau who he met in Paris during the late 1940s and 50s. \n  \n\n

Private Collection © DACS 2019\nBen Uri Gallery\, London\nMarking the 70th anniversary of the death of Polish-Jewish émigré Jankel Adler (1895-1949) BURU’s exhibition explores his nine-year British exile. Adler fled Nazi Germany in 1933\, was declared ‘degenerate’ in his absence\, and arrived in Scotland (via Paris) in 1940. Influenced by Picasso and Klee\, in both Glasgow\, and later London\, he introduced remarkable stylistic and technical innovations\, particularly in printmaking\, to the next generation of British artists. Drawn primarily from private collections\, this exhibition provides a much-needed opportunity to re-assess a still neglected artist\, now considered one of the most important European modernists working in mid-century Britain. \nAlthough under-appreciated in Britain both during his lifetime and in the years immediately following his death\, the major 2018 retrospective\, Jankel Adler und die Avantgarde: Chagall\, Dix\, Klee\, Picasso\, at the Von der Heydt Museum\, Wuppertal\, Germany\, has consolidated Adler’s reputation across Europe. Ben Uri’s exhibition provides an opportunity to re-assess an artist now considered to be one of the most important European modernists working in mid-century Britain. \n  \n\nThe exhibition will be open 11-5 pm Monday to Sunday from 3 June – 16 June\nIt will then be open for the next four Mondays 11-5 pm on 17\, 24 June\, 1 and 8 July \n

DESCRIPTION:The Courtauld Institute of Art\, London\nEncounters in Art: Women Émigré Artists: Marie-Louise von Motesiczky\, Milein Cosman\, Else Meidne\n \nThis series investigates a particularly significant episode in the long history of British art’s relations with the Continent. These lectures will take a close and critical look at the experiences of the émigré artists who came to this country after Hitler’s accession to power in 1933\, examining not only their achievements and influence\, but also the challenges – not to say obstacles – they faced on arrival. \nThe series will open with an introductory lecture providing a broader cultural and political context for the lectures to follow. SUMMARY:Fifth Biennial Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Piano Nobile Kings Place\, London\nExhibition of 120 selected submissions from a long-list of works for the Fifth Biennial Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize at Piano Nobile Kings Place. At the opening a panel of prestigious judges will select a winner. \nCelebrating contemporary British and Irish self-portraiture\, the Ruth Borchard Prize offers a unique opportunity for new and established artists to compete for £10\,000 and an opportunity for their work to be purchased for the Ruth Borchard Next Generation Collection. \nAll artists working\, living or studying in the UK and Ireland are eligible to enter. Works must be a self-portrait of the artist. There are no restrictions on size of work and a wide variety of mediums are welcomed. \n  \n  \n  \nThe Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Collection was the life-long project of German-born Ruth Borchard (1910-2000)\, who came to England in 1938. A prolific author\, Borchard wrote a biography of John Stuart Mill (1957)\, a study of Jewish mysticism (1989)\, murder mystery novels\, children’s books and a semi-autobiographical account of her time interned on the Isle of Man during the Second World War\, entitled We Are Strangers Here: An ‘Enemy Alien’ in Prison in 1940.
