SUMMARY:An Insistence on Freedom: A Celebration of Siegfried Charoux’s Life & Work
DESCRIPTION:‘The Reader’ and ’The Book Reader\, 1960. Charoux preparing for RA Summer exhibition\, attributed to Keystone Press © Charoux-Archive\, LANGENZERSDORF MUSEUM\nHampstead Garden Suburb \n\nPostponed from Sun\, 16 May 2021 due to COVID \n  \nDue to ongoing concerns about COVID\, this event will now take place online. \nThis unique event will be held in émigré sculptor Siegfried Charoux’s former studio in Hampstead Garden Suburb\, London\, NW11\, which has only rarely been opened to the public since his death in 1967. \nThe session will explore Charoux’s commitment to artistic and civil liberties. In the first part the current owners and custodians of the studio will share the story of their discovery of the building and its history\, and their careful restoration of it\, influenced by the spirit of place and by Charoux’s philosophy. Afterwards\, Dr Melanie Veasey will explore Charoux’s Austrian secessionist identity\, cultural influences and émigré encounters and how\, post-war\, his British residency and citizenship led to the development of his revolutionary sculpture practice and politically-inspired iconic British public sculptures\, amongst these The Islanders exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951. \nMelanie Veasey is an art historian\, studying twentieth-century art and visual culture in Britain. She is particularly interested in figurative sculpture and the diversification of public patronage of the arts. Melanie holds a PhD in Art History\, the title of her thesis was ‘Reforming Academicians’\, Sculptors of the Royal Academy of Arts\, c.1948-1959. SUMMARY:Sara Davidmann: My Name is Sara
DESCRIPTION:My name is Sara draws upon themes of family\, post-memory and the Holocaust. \nSara Davidmann discovered a family album of photographs and handwritten notes in German (never before translated)\, that tell a story her father was never able to tell – of the German Jewish side of her family. \nDavidmann’s father\, Manfred\, and his sister Susi survived the Holocaust by escaping from Berlin on the Kindertransport\, arriving in Britain in 1939. \nThe photo-album belonged to Davidmann’s aunt Susi. Early photographs show a family life of seaside holidays\, weddings and Berlin outings – a family Davidmann had not known existed. \nRealising that many of these people did not reappear in photographs taken after World War II she searched for traces of their lives. She uncovered over 130 pages of Nazi and official documents. These revealed that family members were deported to\, and murdered\, in concentration camps at Auschwitz and Theresienstadt. Others survived by escaping to Shanghai and France\, and by living hidden in Berlin with false documents. \nAt the same time – parallel to making these discoveries\, Davidmann used photography and video to make artworks using the material she was uncovering. Recognisable objects – hair\, family photographs and Nazi documents appear in the artworks – only to be disrupted by elements of fire and erasure. This is the first exhibition of this work.” \nAn artist’s book\, Mischling 1\, published by GOST\, accompanies the exhibition. DESCRIPTION:The Rodd\, Presteigne\, Herefordshire \nThis lecture by art historian and Insiders/Outsiders founder Monica Bohm-Duchen will set the powerful Colour of the Sky – Auschwitz Paintings by Sidney Nolan on view at The Rodd from 13 August in a broader context by considering those artists – most but not all of them Jewish –  who from the late nineteenth century onwards\, but above all in the shadow of World War Two and the Holocaust\, chose to represent Jesus as the Jew he historically was\, and as an emblem of Jewish suffering in the present. \nThe lecture will be given live in the gallery (free with admission to the exhibition)\, but a recording will be made available after the event. This is the first museum exhibition to examine the little-known formative years of refugee artist and activist Gustav Metzger (Nuremberg\, Germany 1926 – London\, England 2017). The sixth in BURU’s survey exhibitions highlighting the important contribution of Jewish and immigrant artists to British visual culture since 1900\, the exhibition showcases some 40 rarely seen drawings and paintings from this crucial early period – the majority never previously exhibited – together with related archival material. Highlights include Metzger’s Portrait of Frank Auerbach (c.1952) and the large expressionist oils The Dissolution of the City (1946) and Eroica\, Funeral March (1946)\, as well as early abstract works on board and cardboard\, and a Kodak box. SUMMARY:Hope after catastrophe: The Art of Dante Elsner
DESCRIPTION:Online Event \n\nArtist potter and painter\, Dante Elsner (1920-1997)\, escaped the rounding up of Jews in Poland during the war years\, and survived by hiding in the forest after his family were murdered in two different death camps. After the war\, on the point of suicide in Paris\, he came across Rembrandt’s portrait of Hendrickje Stoffels in the Louvre. He later said that this painting saved his life: he saw the love with which Rembrandt had painted this woman\, and it convinced him that there was a reason to fight to live. \nHe devoted the rest of his life to painting and to studio pottery\, in Paris (1948-58) and in London (1958-1997). Inspired by the teachings of George Gurdjieff\, aspects of Sufism\, Jewish mysticism and Zen Buddhism\, Dante developed an art practice involving a series of daily meditations and spiritual exercises\, and a life philosophy that offered an alternative to despair. Always mistrustful of authorities and institutions – as he learned in the forest that to trust anyone was to end up dead – he did not exhibit his work. It has remained\, despite recent efforts by the Elsner family\, largely unknown\, kept in two sheds near their family home in Oxford. \nThe talk will be given by Dante’s granddaughter\, Maia Elsner\, whose debut poetry collection\, overrun by wild boars (forthcoming with flipped eye in July 2021) explores the nature of intergenerational memory in the context of trauma\, and gestures towards healing through the possibilities of hope. \nTo book\, click here.

SUMMARY:Torn Threads: Aspects of the Life and Work of Textile Designer Otti Berger
DESCRIPTION:Image: Portrait of Otti Berger / Photo: Lucia Moholy\, Dessau 1927–1928\nOnline Event \n\nJudith Raum\, a Berlin-based visual artist\, has been researching the legacy of textile designer Otti Berger (1898-1944) for several years. As a Yugoslav Jew\, Berger\, who had trained at the Bauhaus\, was forced to leave the German Reich\, where she had run her own textile studio in Berlin\, and unsuccessfully tried to make a new life in Great Britain. She returned to her home village of Zmajevac\, where although cut off from her professional networks\, she continued to work before being deported by the Nazis and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944.  \nConsequently\, her estate lies scattered in archives over the world. She was an outstanding designer\, both of experimental handweaves and of industrially produced fabrics. In Raum’s own words\, “There is an extraordinary strength in Berger’s designs for functional textiles such as upholstery or wall spanning materials: it lies in the combination of sensual riches and conceptual clarity. In addition\, Berger’s practice is characterized by resolutely balancing experimentation on a hand-loom with the necessities of industrial production processes.” \nIn her lecture- cum-performance\, originally drafted for the Harvard Art Museums\, Judith Raum contemplates the significance of a special kind of fabric in Berger’s oeuvre – net-like textiles – which allows her to draw a richly rhizomatic net of connections – among them\, to the work of Berger’s colleagues and industrial design history of the 1930s\, as well as to questions of authorship and recognition. \nJudith Raum will be joined by eminent UK-based design historian Tanya Harrod\, who will chair the event and say more about Otti Berger’s time in England.  \n  \nTo book\, click here.

DESCRIPTION:Online Event \n\nBaroness Rabbi Julia Neuberger DBE will be in conversation with Joachim Schloer\, author of a new book about her redoubtable mother Alice (Liesel) Schwab. They will be joined by art historian Julia Weiner\, who as curator of the Ben Uri Gallery\, London Jewish Museum of Art in the 1990s\, came to know Liesel well. \nCarefully piecing together the personal letters of Alice ‘Liesel’ Schwab\, Escaping Nazi Germany tells the important story of one woman’s emigration from Heilbronn to England. From the decision to leave her family and emigrate alone\, to gaining her independence as a shop worker and surviving the Blitz\, to the reunion with her brother and parents in England and shared grief as they learn about the fate of family members who died in the Holocaust\, her story provides powerful insight into both the everyday realities of German-Jewish refugees in Britain and the ability of letters and life-writing to create transnational networks during times of trauma and separation. \nThroughout her life Liesel collected art\, befriended and supported artists\, and was closely involved with both the AJR and the Ben Uri. SUMMARY:'Sanctuary in the City' Public Art by Refugees & Immigrants Tour
DESCRIPTION:Online Tour\n\n\nInformation on Walk: The City of London has always been home to immigrant communities. This walks winds its way through the City streets and highlights immigrants who made a mark here in a literal way as it is home to some of their sculptures and reliefs. We will discover the first official public sculpture\, the Monument which was carved by Caius Gabriel Cibber a Danish immigrant; a drinking fountain by French refugee\, Aimé-Jules Dalou; mosaics by Russian born Boris Anrep and perhaps the most significant contribution of sculptures are by a number of refugees from Nazi Europe who settled in the UK such as Naomi Blake\, Frank Meisler\, Oscar Nemon and Georg Ehrlich. The tour finishes with the most recent sculpture\, Unity\, 1992 by a Croatian refugee from former Yugoslavia\, Ivan Klapez. \nThe Guide: Marilyn Greene is a guide\, museum curator and educator. She was curator of Hampstead Museum\, Burgh House from 1998-2006 and worked in the learning department of the Victoria and Albert Museum from 2000-2013 and more recently at London Transport Museum. She has been guiding locally for many years on history\, art and architectural themes and qualified as a City guide in 2015. She particularly enjoys talking about the architecture\, art and landscaping of the City. DESCRIPTION:In Depth\, (detail)\,1948-9\, oil on canvas\, 61 x 50.8 cm\nA talk by the artist’s grandson Tommy Żyw\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Event \nAleksander Żyw was born into a Jewish family in Lida\, Poland in 1905 and trained at Warsaw School of Fine Arts in the early 1930s. He was living and working in Paris when the War broke out and he fought with the Polish Army in France before escaping to the UK where the Polish Army was reforming. He arrived in Scotland in 1940 and was appointed as an official war artist. He would later discover that almost all his family had been murdered in the Holocaust. He made Edinburgh his home until he moved permanently to Italy in the 1970s. \nŻyw continued to exhibit across Europe\, with shows in Paris\, Basel and a retrospective exhibition held by the Polish National Union of Artists in 1967. In the UK\, he enjoyed a Festival exhibition at The Scottish Gallery in 1950 and 1957\, and major exhibitions with The Scottish Arts Council in 1972\, the Talbot Rice in 1975 and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 1986. His last significant exhibitions were in Parma in 1988\, and Desenzano in 1991. \nThis focused presentation by the artist’s grandson Tommy Żyw\, Director of The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh\, will offer a snapshot of a pivotal moment in Żyw’s artistic career. SUMMARY:Restitution: Gimpel vs the French Government - a Seven Year Saga
DESCRIPTION:André Derain\, Pinède à Cassis (detail)\, 1907\nFor seven years\, the grandchildren of eminent art dealer René Gimpel (1881-1945) mounted a campaign to recover three paintings by André Derain\, which they believed were seized from their grandfather in forced sales during the Occupation of France. Finally\, a verdict in the case – Gimpel vs the French Government – was reached on 30 September 2020\, after copious research\, forensic detective work and two high court proceedings. One grandson\, also called René Gimpel\, will recount this extraordinary saga\, and describe how during the war his grandfather\, his English wife and their three children were involved in Resistance activities throughout occupied France. \nRené Gimpel will be in discussion with Sue Grayson Ford MBE\, co-curator of last year’s Brave New Visions exhibition at Sotheby’s\, which explored the legacy of émigré dealers from Nazi Europe\, including the Gimpel family. \nThis event is held in partnership with the Association of Jewish Refugees. SUMMARY:Hampstead's Pioneers of Modern Art

Photo: Marilyn Greene\nMeet at Hampstead Tube Station\nIn the first half of the 20th Century Hampstead was home to some of the era’s most pioneering artists. We will walk in the footsteps of the Slade School artists such as Mark Gertler\, Stanley Spencer and R.W. Nevinson who socialised in Downshire Hill with the artistic Carline family. \nWe will hear of their loves\, hates and reactions to the First World War. A small diversion will take us to the Vale of Health where the former Vale of Health Hotel was situated and we will see the site of the old Hampstead fairground painted by both Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler. In Downshire Hill we will also discuss the role that Roland Penrose\, Margaret Gardiner and Fred and Diana Uhlman played in the art world in the years leading up to\, and during\, the Second World War. We walk to Belsize Park to learn of the Modernists including Henry Moore\, Piet Mondrian and Barbara Hepworth whom Herbert Read described as living as a “nest of gentle artists” and conclude with the refugee designers who stayed at the Isokon flats before moving to pastures new. \nThe walk is led by guide and art historian\, Marilyn Greene \n  \n\nThe walk duration: two and a half hours.

Tempera and oil on canvas\, 153x102cm\, private collection\nMOMA\, Machynlleth\nThis major touring exhibition\, curated by Dr Peter Wakelin\, is a timely exploration of the impact of artist refugees on art in Britain\, taking a perspective across the last 150 years. \nThe migration of creative individuals and groups has always been a source of innovation and cultural cross-fertilisation. This exhibition’s main focus is the crucial influence of émigrés who came from eastern and central Europe during the 1930s and 1940s. It explores how they were perceived by their peers in Britain and the extent to which their influence excited or inspired new art. \nExhibited artists include Joan Eardley\, Naum Gabo\, Humberto Gatica-Leyton\, Mona Hatoum\, Barbara Hepworth\, Josef Herman\, Samira Kitman\, Josef Koudelka\, Hanaa Malallah\, Ben Nicholson\, Camille Pissarro\, Zory Shahrokhi\, Kurt Schwitters and Walid Siti. It looks back to the temporary exile of refugees from the First World War and forward to the present\, when the reception of refugees and their contributions to British life are more contentious than ever. \nMany of the artists present extraordinary and deeply moving stories of escape from dispossession\, persecution\, torture\, intellectual oppression and war. The welcome for foreign artists has not always been positive and has included critical hostility\, financial difficulties\, personal tragedy and even internment\, yet they have often exerted a remarkably direct influence on British contemporaries. \nA substantial book by Peter Wakelin\, published by Sansom & Co. will accompany the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:Fred Uhlman\, Welsh Cottage\, 1958\nBuxton Museum and Art Gallery\, Buxton\nArt that shines a spotlight on a time when communities and artists were affected by war and persecution is on show at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. \nBetween Two Worlds explores the early to mid-20th century when governments sought to impose Western society and religion\, depriving communities of their cultural identity. \nIn the turmoil of war artists were persecuted\, interned and displaced. They faced discrimination and prejudice when not conforming on religious beliefs\, racism or sexuality. \nBetween Two Worlds explores the art created during this tumultuous period featuring work by John Minton\, Fred Uhlman\, Josef Herman and Ben Enwonwu. It draws exhibits from Derbyshire County Council’s collection\, such as the bequest of Arto Funduklian\, the son of Armenian émigrés\, including work by Marc Chagall\, Duncan Grant and Wyndham Lewis.

Photo: Kirstin Prisk.\nTate St Ives\, Cornwall\nTate St Ives presents this major exhibition of one of the pioneers of constructivism\, Naum Gabo. This is the first extensive presentation of his sculptures\, paintings\, drawings and architectural designs to be held in the UK for over 30 years\, and marks the centenary of the Realistic Manifesto 1920\, a set of pioneering artistic principles launched in Moscow by Gabo and his brother Antoine Pevsner. The exhibition offers a fresh perspective on Gabo’s ground-breaking experiments\, which made time\, space and synthetic materials the key building blocks of modernist art practice. The development of these ideas is shown through Gabo’s innovative use of plastic in sculpture and stage design\, his activation of abstract forms in time-based art\, and his paintings and prints. Gabo lived in the UK between 1935 and 1946\, living first in Hampstead and then in St.Ives before moving to the USA.

SUMMARY:Belonging and Not Belonging: An Art History Day School
DESCRIPTION:Dobrivoje Beljkašić\nRoyal West of England Academy\, Bristol\nJoin Peter Wakelin\, the curator of ‘Refuge and Renewal: Migration and British Art’ for an Art History Day School packed with fascinating stories of émigré artists and the impact of displacement. Peter will unpack some of the context in which this exhibition sits\, and give an overview of this wide topic. \nThe informative day not only features a curator’s exhibition tour in the galleries\, but also some fascinating talks delivered by other specialists and finishes with a chaired panel discussion. \nMonica Bohm-Duchen will be looking at the immigrant experience in modern art from 1933\, speaking about refugees from Nazi Europe. \nPeter Rossiter will talk on the life and work of his grandfather\, the painter Martin Bloch (1883-1954) who had German nationality until it was taken from him in 1933 by the Nazis. \nDee Smart will speak about the life and work of Dobrivoje Beljkašić\, an artist and lecturer from Sarajevo\, Bosnia\, who lived in Bristol\, from 1993 until his death in 2015. \nMain Lecturers: \nPeter Wakelin is a writer and curator. He was formerly Secretary of the Royal Commission on the Ancient & Historical Monuments of Wales and Director of Collections & Research at National Museum Wales. He has written for Art Review\, Modern Painters and The Guardian. \nMonica Bohm-Duchen is an independent\, London-based lecturer\, curator and writer. The institutions for which she has worked include the Tate\, the Royal Academy of Arts\, Sotheby’s Institute of Art and the Courtauld Institute of Art. \nReserve your place here. SUMMARY:Dissent and Displacement: A Modern Story - Monica Petzal and Margarete Klopfleisch
DESCRIPTION:Monica Petzal: Book burning in Dresden May 1933\nNew Walk Museum and Gallery\, Leicester\nThe exhibition is in two parts: wall-mounted prints by contemporary artist Monica Petzal; and sculptures and works on paper by Margarete Klopfleisch (1911-82). \nMonica Petzal is a painter\, printmaker and art historian who trained at Sussex University\, the Royal College of Art and Camberwell College of Art. She has had a diverse career as a curator\, critic and practicing artist. Her work can be found in public collections including the V&A Museum\, London and New Hall College Art Collection\, University of Cambridge. Full details can be found here. \nMonica has created a body of prints\, which explore not only her family history (her parents’ lived in Dresden during the 1930s) but also the forces of conflict and change which have shaped the cities of Coventry and Dresden\, both of which were heavily bombed in WW2. New works for Leicester will incorporate the story of Leicester’s wartime museum director Trevor Thomas\, as well as ideas around contemporary LGBT identities and modern dissidence. \nMargarete Klopfleisch\, née Grossner\, was a Dresden-born sculptor\, draughtswoman and printmaker. Ill health and the fervent left-wing views which she acquired as a young woman dominated her life. Having joined the German Communist Party in 1931\, she was forced to flee to Prague two years later when the Nazis came to power and joined the Oskar Kokoschka League of Anti-Fascist Artists in 1937. When Hitler’s troops marched into Czechoslovakia\, she fled again. On the 9th March 1939 with the threat of war looming\, she emigrated to England on the last transport to leave the Czech Republic. \nIn England she was employed as a housekeeper by Roland Penrose who in turn helped her with further studies. Here she worked and exhibited with societies such as the Free German League of Culture and the Artists International Association. In 1940\, like many German-Jewish refugees\, she was interned on the Isle of Man. After her release she exhibited in London\, Maidenhead\, Cookham\, Glasgow and Reading. Her sculptures\, many of them carved in wood\, link directly to an expressionist tradition seen in the work of Ernst Barlach\, also represented in the Leicester collections. \nMargarete Klopfleisch\, Despair\, 1941. On loan to New Walk Museum and Art Gallery\, Leicester\nApproximately 35-40 works by Klopfleisch will comprise the second part of the exhibition\, including wood sculptures\, paintings\, drawings and family documents. \n  \nSunday 16 February 2020: Dissent and Displacement Public Seminar Series
