This event\, on Thursday 13 October at 2.30pm\, is an in-person guided tour of  the exhibition\, Lucian Freud: The Painter and his Family\, currently on at the Freud Museum\, London; the third\, on Thursday 20 October at 1pm\, an online talk by Elizabeth Lamle about Freud’s very early work and correspondence; the fourth\, on Thursday 27 October at 2.30pm\, an in-person visit to the major Freud retrospective at the National Gallery\, preceded by an introductory lecture by art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen. \n\nGallery Tour: The Painter and His Family \nSee the Freud Museum’s exhibition Lucian Freud: The Painter and His Family up close and personal on this guided tour led by Jamie Ruers\, art historian\, author and programmer at the Freud Museum. This is the first display of Freud’s work in the home of his grandfather Sigmund and aunt Anna. The show explores the artist’s childhood\, family and friends\, celebrating the lesser-known aspects of his life. These include his love of reading and lifelong fascination with horses\, as well as his relationships with the former occupants of 20 Maresfield Gardens. Alongside his paintings and drawings\, see Freud’s illustrated childhood letters\, books he owned and book covers he designed. This first event is an online talk by historian Helen Fry\, based on her fascinating book Freud’s War; the second\, on Thursday 13 October at 2.30pm\, is an in-person guided tour of  the exhibition\, Lucian Freud: The Painter and his Family\, currently on at the Freud Museum\, London; the third\, on Thursday 20 October at 1pm\, an online talk by Elizabeth Lamle about Freud’s very early work and correspondence; the fourth\, on Thursday 27 Octoberat 2.30pm\, an in-person visit to the major Freud retrospective at the National Gallery\, preceded by an introductory lecture by art historian Monica Bohm-Duchen. \n\nLunchtime Lecture: Freuds’ War \nHistorian Dr Helen Fry charts the story of the Freud family following their departure from Austria as refugees during World War II. Despite his worldwide reputation as the father of modern psychology\, Sigmund Freud’s security in his native Vienna changed overnight when Hitler’s forces annexed Austria in 1938. It was after becoming refugees that the Freuds’ story took a fascinating turn. Following their dramatic escape from Austria\, Sigmund’s son Martin and grandson Walter enlisted in the British Forces. In 1943\, Walter volunteered for Special Operations Executive\, a secret British World War II organisation\, which sent him back to Austria to spy behind enemy lines. \nDr Fry has written over 25 books\, including Spymaster: The Man Who Saved MI6\, Churchill’s German Army\, and the bestselling The Walls Have Ears: The Greatest Intelligence Operation of WWII. SUMMARY:Jussuf Abbo – re-constructing the life and work of a forgotten artist
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Dorothea Schöne about Jussuf\, Abbo\, a fascinating but still too little-known émigré artist\, who died in London in 1953. \nOn Tuesday 14 June at 6pm UK time\, Berlin-based curator and art historian Dorothea Schöne will give an online talk about sculptor Jussuf Abbo. Born in Safed\, Abbo moved to Germany in 1911\, where he established a reputation for himself as a portrait sculptor and printmaker and an active member of the Berlin artistic avant-garde. In 1935\, however\, he was forced to flee Germany\, and moved to England\, where – despite a network of well-wishers and supporters – he struggled to re-establish his artistic career. He died in obscurity in London in 1953. The first Stolperstein ever to be laid in the UK\, it commemorates a young Dutch-Jewish paintings conservator who came to this country in the 1930s to work\, but in 1939 decided to try to rejoin her family in the Netherlands. SUMMARY:Artists As Hybrids: A Talk by Stephen Duncan
DESCRIPTION:Image: Stephen Duncan\, Waiting for the Wind\, 1995\nStephen Duncan FRSS will be talking about his career as a sculptor in both the UK and Italy. Stephen is the son of poet Beata Duncan and grandson of the Weimar playwright Hans Rehfisch\, both born in Berlin and refugees from Germany in the 1930s. \nStephen trained at the University of the Arts\, London\, the Royal Academy of Arts\, London and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. However\, he began his career as an artist in his early teens when he turned his bedroom into a studio and became an assistant to several sculptors including Michael Werner and Gertrude Hermes. He will be talking about Michael Werner\, Willi Soukop and Riccardo Priulli Bon\, all of whom were refugees and émigrés in London and all of whom were interned as ‘enemy aliens’ in 1940. \nIn keeping with the themes of the Insiders/Outsiders project\, Stephen will be discussing the contribution these three ‘enemy aliens’ made to British culture and education by introducing the visual cultures of Germany\, Austria and Italy and how this gave rise to a ‘hybrid’ of influences on sculptors working in the UK after WW2. DESCRIPTION:This richly illustrated new book by Tessa Murdoch focuses on the extraordinary international networks resulting from the diaspora of more than 200\,000 refugees who left France in the late 17th century to join communities already in exile spread far and wide. \nFirst-generation Huguenot refugees included hundreds of trained artists\, designers\, and craftsmen. Beyond the French borders\, they raised the quality of design and workshop practice\, passing on skills to their apprentices; sons\, godsons\, cousins\, and to successive generations\, who continued to dominate output in the luxury trades. \nAlthough silver and silks are the best-known fields with which Huguenot settlers are associated\, their significant contribution to architecture\, ceramics\, design\, clock and watchmaking\, engraving\, furniture\, woodwork\, sculpture\, portraiture\, and art education provides fascinating insight into the motivation and resolve of this highly skilled diaspora. Thanks to a sophisticated network of Huguenot merchants\, retailers\, and bankers who financed their production\, their wares reached a global market. \nTessa Murdoch is an independent art historian\, consultant and curator. Until last year she was Research Curator of the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum\, having previously worked there for many years in the Furniture\, Sculpture\, Metalwork and Ceramics Collections\, and before that at the Museum of London. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries\, and of the Idlewild Trust\, and advisor to the National Trust and the National Heritage Memorial Fund. DESCRIPTION:Maurice Blik has lived in England ever since being liberated from Bergen-Belsen\, where he was taken as a small child from his birthplace\, Amsterdam. The ability to come to terms with this experience\, and to confront the face of (in)humanity that he had witnessed\, stayed silent in his life for some forty years. It finally found a voice in the late 1980s when he created a passionate series of horses’ heads; he later progressed to sculptures of the human figure in which the irrepressible joy of life and the destructive\, impenetrable shadow of existence co-exist to form a precarious unity. \nMaurice Blik has had a long career in art education\, teaching at all levels from primary to postgraduate. In 1991\, however\, he gave up teaching to work fulltime as a sculptor. SUMMARY:Paul and Hilde Hamann: From Hamburg to Hampstead
DESCRIPTION:Paul Hamann was born in Hamburg in 1891\, trained as a sculptor and taught at the art school where his future wife Hilde was a student. They married in 1920 and joined the rural artist’s colony of Worpswede. He became interested in photography and film making and was inspired to develop a way of making accurate portraits in three dimensions by means of a lifemask. Moving to Berlin in the decadent late 20’s he enjoyed some celebrity when it became a fad for the glitterati of the period to have a lifemask made. Such was its popularity that in 1930 he was invited to London to produce portraits of people in high society.  \nIn 1933\, Paul and Hilde left Germany with their young daughter and moved to Paris. Five years later they moved again to London\, where\, having established themselves amidst the community of émigré artists that had gathered in the Hampstead area\, they felt themselves welcome. However in 1940 when the government decided to intern all so-called ‘enemy aliens’\, their lives were turned upside down.  \nAfter the war Paul and Hilde found a new studio in St John’s Wood where he continued to work\, teaching life classes while Hilde worked as a potter. He continued to sculpt until days before his death in 1973; his last figure of a sleeping woman adorns his grave in New Southgate Cemetery. \nTo book\, click here. \n

DESCRIPTION:Ernst Neuschul\, Untitled (The Rainbow)\, c1940\nA talk by art historian Simon Lake about the rich and tumultuous life of émigré painter Ernst Neuschul. \nErnst Neuschul was born in 1895 in Aussig\, in what is now the Czech Republic and studied art in Prague and Vienna. Moving to Krakow during WWI to avoid conscription\, he graduated there in 1919\, subsequently dividing his time between Prague and Berlin. He met and later married a nightclub dancer of Dutch-Javanese heritage\, Lucia Lindemann\, and between 1922 and 1926 the couple performed Javanese dance across Europe under the stage names Yoga-Taro and Takka Takka. \nIn Berlin Neuschul moved away from the powerful expressionism of his earlier work and began painting under the influence of the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) movement. In 1926 he joined the strongly anti-fascist Novembergruppe. His work during the 1920s took a more hard-edged and socially committed look at day-to-day life under the Weimar Republic\, yet also embodied an innate compassion\, whether depicting unemployed industrial workers or the ‘demimonde’. \nIn 1932 Neuschul became Professor of Fine Arts at Berlin’s Academy of Fine Art and was also elected chairman of the Novembergruppe. In 1933\, however\, an exhibition of his paintings was closed down by the Nazis. Because of his Jewish birth and radical political opinions Neuschul also lost his teaching post and in March 1933 he returned to Aussig. Invited to Moscow in 1935\, he painted a double portrait of Stalin and Dimitroff and the steelworkers of Elektrostal. In 1936 he left the country\, thus escaping Stalin’s anti-Jewish purges. In 1937 an exhibition he held in Aussig was vandalised by Nazi toughs\, and in 1939 he emigrated with his second wife Christl and son to Great Britain\, on the last train to leave Czechoslovakia. \nNeuschul died in London in 1968\, yet to this day remains far too-little known in this country. \nTo book\, click here \n

SUMMARY:From Internee to Art Collector: Tribute to Ruth Borchard
DESCRIPTION:Born near Hamburg in 1910\, the writer Ruth Borchard came as a German-Jewish refugee to Britain in 1938. As an ‘enemy alien’ in wartime she was imprisoned first in Holloway Prison\, then interned in Rushen women’s camp on the Isle of Man. Her fictionalised memoir We Are Strangers Here: An Enemy Alien in Prison in 1940\, only published after her death\, provides a rare insight into life as a refugee in Holloway Prison. \nBetween 1958 and 1971 she amassed a superb collection of over 100 self-portraits by British-based artists\, well-known and less well-known\, which provides a fascinating overview of British portraiture in the mid-twentieth century \nAfter her death in 2000\, the collection was transferred to a charitable trust to become the Original Ruth Borchard Collection\, under the custodianship of Piano Nobile. In 2011 a biennial self-portrait prize was set up in her name\, with a selection of submitted works acquired for the Next Generation Collection. Charoux preparing for RA Summer exhibition\, attributed to Keystone Press © Charoux-Archive\, LANGENZERSDORF MUSEUM\nHampstead Garden Suburb \n\nPostponed from Sun\, 16 May 2021 due to COVID \n  \nDue to ongoing concerns about COVID\, this event will now take place online. \nThis unique event will be held in émigré sculptor Siegfried Charoux’s former studio in Hampstead Garden Suburb\, London\, NW11\, which has only rarely been opened to the public since his death in 1967. \nThe session will explore Charoux’s commitment to artistic and civil liberties. In the first part the current owners and custodians of the studio will share the story of their discovery of the building and its history\, and their careful restoration of it\, influenced by the spirit of place and by Charoux’s philosophy. Afterwards\, Dr Melanie Veasey will explore Charoux’s Austrian secessionist identity\, cultural influences and émigré encounters and how\, post-war\, his British residency and citizenship led to the development of his revolutionary sculpture practice and politically-inspired iconic British public sculptures\, amongst these The Islanders exhibited at the Festival of Britain in 1951. \nMelanie Veasey is an art historian\, studying twentieth-century art and visual culture in Britain. She is particularly interested in figurative sculpture and the diversification of public patronage of the arts. SUMMARY:Sara Davidmann: My Name is Sara
DESCRIPTION:My name is Sara draws upon themes of family\, post-memory and the Holocaust. \nSara Davidmann discovered a family album of photographs and handwritten notes in German (never before translated)\, that tell a story her father was never able to tell – of the German Jewish side of her family. \nDavidmann’s father\, Manfred\, and his sister Susi survived the Holocaust by escaping from Berlin on the Kindertransport\, arriving in Britain in 1939. \nThe photo-album belonged to Davidmann’s aunt Susi. Early photographs show a family life of seaside holidays\, weddings and Berlin outings – a family Davidmann had not known existed. \nRealising that many of these people did not reappear in photographs taken after World War II she searched for traces of their lives. She uncovered over 130 pages of Nazi and official documents. These revealed that family members were deported to\, and murdered\, in concentration camps at Auschwitz and Theresienstadt. Others survived by escaping to Shanghai and France\, and by living hidden in Berlin with false documents. \nAt the same time – parallel to making these discoveries\, Davidmann used photography and video to make artworks using the material she was uncovering. Recognisable objects – hair\, family photographs and Nazi documents appear in the artworks – only to be disrupted by elements of fire and erasure. This is the first exhibition of this work.” \nAn artist’s book\, Mischling 1\, published by GOST\, accompanies the exhibition. SUMMARY:Passion (1940-45): Representing the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:The Rodd\, Presteigne\, Herefordshire \nThis lecture by art historian and Insiders/Outsiders founder Monica Bohm-Duchen will set the powerful Colour of the Sky – Auschwitz Paintings by Sidney Nolan on view at The Rodd from 13 August in a broader context by considering those artists – most but not all of them Jewish –  who from the late nineteenth century onwards\, but above all in the shadow of World War Two and the Holocaust\, chose to represent Jesus as the Jew he historically was\, and as an emblem of Jewish suffering in the present. \nThe lecture will be given live in the gallery (free with admission to the exhibition)\, but a recording will be made available after the event.
