The Face of Weimar Culture

The Wiener Library, London

Taking Gerty Simon’s striking image (c. 1929) of the sculptor Renée Sintenis as a starting point, this talk will explore Simon’s photographs as part of a wider culture of the artistic face and body in Weimar modernity. Focusing on images of artists, Dr Deborah Lewer will consider the critical importance of the arts – photography and other media – gender and the shifting politics of Germany in the 1920s and 1930s.

18.30 – 20.00
