Born in Berlin in 1922, Freud enjoyed a happy and secure childhood in Germany up until the Nazi’s ascent to power in 1933, later that year the Freud family moved to Great Britain.

In 2018 the NPG completed cataloguing the papers associated with Lucian Freud and members of his family, included within them are childhood drawings and letters of Freud and correspondence between his parents documenting the family’s move to Britain and how they adapted to life in a new country.

Archive material will be used to describe and illustrate the Freud family experience.
